As Cactus Pete, the notorious train robber, it is your mission to hijack locomotives and to steal gold bullion from the guard van located in the final train car.
Reaching the bullion wagon is no easy task. Pete must first guide his horse alongside the speeding train to a ladder near the engine before climbing aboard. Once on the roof of the train, Pete must jump between each of the carriages, taking care not to fall over the side or down the gap between them. The train will also suddenly plunge into a tunnel, requiring Pete to hit the deck and stay down until the train exits the tunnel.
Should Pete manage to reach the bullion wagon, he will then need to collect two keys that unlock the safe. Unfortunately, the keys are guarded by a pair of vicious dogs that will take a bite out of Pete's trousers and send him fleeing for the ladder.
Once the bullion has been collected, Pete must make it back to the ladder and leap back along the roof of the train to the ladder, whereupon he can make his escape on horseback.
Pete can earn bonus points between levels by attempting to outrun law-men who are right on his tail. The marshals will try to shoot Pete off his horse, but he is able to return fire using his trust six-shooter. Extra ammunition can be collected by running over it, but it's tricky to do and Pete can quite often end up defenceless against his opponents.
Originally released on Firebird's £1.99 silver range, Train Robbers is a budget game easily worth the asking price. The game concept is great, but is extremely challenging too. Even if the player manages to steal bullion from the train, subsequent levels add new hazards and obstacles to keep the game fresh.
The game has no actual ending, so I simply played until no new features appeared in the levels; once the Native Americans start appearing, you've pretty much reached the highest difficulty the game has to offer.
The graphics are very well drawn and full of nice touches. The pixelated dots in the background of the train section provide a pseudo-parallax scrolling effect, whilst making Pete's eyes visible in the pitch black of the tunnels is a great comedic touch.
The game has a great opening title tune by Rob Hubbard, whilst the sound effects are simple yet effective.
The one negative comment I would make is that jumping between the train carriages can be incredibly fiddly. Pete is quite a portly chap and can't jump very far, which means that he must get right to the very edge of the carriage if he is to make the jump. This can quite often result in him not jumping at all and simply falling down the gap to his death.
All things considered, Train Robbers is great little game to pass the time. Andrew Holdroyd showed real talent with this title and it's a shame that he didn't appear to make any other games after this one.

A lot of charm and originality for a game of its time. The trick is figuring out what to do and how to progress your way on to the train and then down the carriages whilst avoiding falling off and/or being knocked off. It takes time, patience and lots of tries!

Games were difficult af then. That's why it's great to see someone beat what I was not able to beat back when I was a kid. If not for YT, I'd never know the endings of some titles. Many thanks!!!

There was a cracked copy of this that had a splash screen with INC bouncing around in large letters, does anyone have a video of it? Would be much appreciated. The copy I had as a kid had the cracked intro screen.

I really wonder how the horse got to stay beside that train while you where on top of it.. The train tunnels... The horse would have run around the mountains... :)

Haha, me too! Can you imagine 24 minutes of gameplay on 64kB RAM? That's insane comparing to today's just few hours of gameplay on hundreds of GB on harddrive.
