Don't get me wrong I love Ron Perlman but I think that Peter was the best choice. And that Ron got to play a certain aspect of methos later was awesome.
But the real Methos showing up just make sure that the fake one wasn't pulling something and wasn't trying to hurt young Immortals was important. Methos being ready to just peace out when he realized that the fake m wasn't a bad man was cool though.
Pearlman's version was misguided but not a bad man. It would have been nice if the type of world that he would have liked to have lived in was real, he paints a nice picture not realistic but nice.

As I watch this scene again and again, I think Pearlman's charactor may have suspected that the man he met was the original Methos.
The body language of each charactor in this scene is interesting, especially when it comes to eye contact:
One distances himself from the other by looking away, but then the dynamic reverses as the discussion gets deeper, until both look each other straight on.
Does the second "Methos" truely believe he is the original? Highly unlikely. Instead, he may be an immortal who has indeed lived for several thousand or more years, perhaps just shy of the real Methos' 5000 year record.
By taking on the new name "Methos", this man would carry on the legacy of the original - similar in principle to how, in the Princess Bride, the title of "The Dread Pirate Roberts" would be secretly past down from the current Captain of the 'Revenge' to a worthy successor.
Of course, the original Methos never passed down his name to this person - it was adopted by the man, most likely thinking that the real Methos died long ago.
Perhaps by his smile at the end of their discussion, Methos 2 finally understood that Methos 1 was alive and well. Even if he himself should die, Methos 1 would continue to live.

The way I see it...in a sword fight against methos, duncan would have no chance at all. Yet the show seems to show that methos has ''splendid' but not legendary duncan-caliber sword skills. Why do I say this? Well in 5000 years, even if Methos took just two heads a year, that is an insanely gigantic number-and all that power/ability would be his. My favorite episode was when Methos told another immortal: "Just because I don't like to fight, doesn't mean I CAN'T!!". It would have been neat if Methos completely dominated anyone he faced with a few very lightning quick tactics. Or to have some sort of other awesome 'power' like sorcerer nakano did, that would obliterate the competition. Methos is by far my fav character, I just wanted them to up his skill by quite a lot! Duncan did once tell him that one of his really cool sword tactics was outdated by a hundred years. Lol.

Gotta make ya think, Richie likely said something to him about meeting the real Methos off screen, and that's probably what the whole conversation of Richie thinking he was pissed at him in the scene in his yard was all about. And also judging by the look on his face in that scene with Richie, he's thinking (pondering if you will) wait a minute, Richie just met Methos today, meaning he's here, now. That immortal earlier who didn't give me his name. Did I really come face to face with Methos? But he's not real. I assume Pearlman's character is intelligent enough, it wouldn't be too difficult for him to put 2 and 2 together on that one. Especially since there's 3 immortals already there that he knows of being Richie, MacLeod, and Culbraith. Then Richie comes to him with a story of MacLeod introducing him to the real Methos, and there was another immortal he spoke to who was mockingly asking him questions about Cleopatra and Socrates and whom he was unable to identify.

If true, then maybe he sought Methos out not only for a reunion but also to see if he could force Methos or one of his other brothers to kill him. Maybe by challenging the whole world, one might be able to finally end him. If he had truly been the monster they portrayed for thousands of years then he wouldn't have survived so long or gone so unnoticed. Likely when Duncan first met him in the 1800's and in modern day, he just fell off the wagon so to speak.

Also some of the worst crimes in human history have been committed by people who called themselves "righteous" (the Inquisition is a good example) and even the worst dictators and monsters in human history were not entirely incapable of mercy (even fucking Hitler was known to have written some of the worlds first animal rights laws).
No matter what philosophy you follow, if you are a Judeo-Christian, a follower of Mohammad, a Buddhist, or you have your own sense of honor and ethics - there is no such thing as a perfect human being and there is a great deal of grey area between good and evil.

Disagree. Yes, no one is perfect, and people can & do change. But there is a lot less grey area than you think between good & evil. Many of the world's religions promote the same values -- truth, justice, fairness, compassion. Yes, many times religious leaders are corrupt, and many times religious adherents are hypocritical fakes, but their deeds are eventually recognized for what they are. You won't find Catholic leaders praising the hordes of innocents killed during the Inquisition or the Crusades. You won't find American Protestants praising the Salem Witch trials. You won't find many American Protestants praising slavery or Jim Crow (although there are still a sizable minority of scum doing so, but give it time). Interesting that religions from all over the world and from different times tend to promote the same values.

The crux for the real Methos was about "ending the game". In my opinion that was the reason why he was there.

Methos is a wimp n knos it. He'd be better off doing what Darius did LOL but he is a character. I bet through Joe Dawson the Watchers get some pretty interesting fill in material lol, and about that how is Methos in the Watchers, don't the Watchers have a test where they cut your finger or something and if you heal immediately you're not in LOL?

@@joelquinn5347 From what I read, they simply intended to do much more with the character in only that exact show. Before they made 'hunters' episode, they knew he had a tumor. But then he became extremely ill while the shooting was occurring. One script writer had to work for 25 straight hours to salvage the episode. Perhaps I'm only telling you a bit of the saga. Before they knew he had a tumor, perhaps they had more planned for the character. Just offering what I know.

I may be mistaken, but I think they had always planned for Darius to die in that episode, but planned to feature him in a lot of Duncan's flashbacks during the rest of the series. That would have been wonderful! Darius is one of my favorite characters.

Apparently the producer who pulled this together is good friends with Ron Perlman and wrote this episode after hearing Ron say many of these things. I remember the producer being pissed that Ron Perlman phoned in his performance a bit here. Which he definitely did - he's certainly gone more full-throttle in other roles - but for fuck's sake, the whole episode is structured around Ron Perlman's real life beliefs ... and the episode spends most of it's time telling him that his beliefs are wrong. I can never rewatch this scene without thinking about that.

Methos just testing the waters. Meeting this messenger and realizing how much the messenger will not defend himself or even try to disappear. methos has definitely encountered idealist's like this before and is probably immensely disillusioned with them.

Yes, the real Methos met many fake Methoi. This fake Methos (Ron Pearlman) version was a Liberal and idealistic immortal, yet was going to meet the same fate as all the others that had the same ideology. (Immortal or not) They were beheaded or killed without a fight. The real Methos was a realist, since he lived as long as he did.
