I Couldn't Believe what I Found when I visited a New Location! Mudlarking in Scotland (April 2022)

- When you visit a different part of the country and you didn't take your wellies because mudarking wasn't on the agenda but there is an amazing low tide!! When I opened my hotel window in the morning and saw a low tide stretching out for what seemed like miles and a vast expanse of untouched mud - I knew I had to get down there to explore! But I had no boots with me!! Sometimes you find the best treasures when you are least expecting it. When I travelled to Scotland for the weekend in early April for a party the last thing I was prepared for was mudlarking. Luckily I managed to find some boots (Thanks Jo for lending me some) and I took some of the hotel bin bags for my finds. What a fabulous adventure I had! And I found something I had not expected to find at all!
Thank you for watching.

This was such a fun and unexpected outing in the mud. I was not prepared but luckily I was able to get some wellies and explore the vast expanse of mud that greeted me when I opened my hotel room in the morning. Congratulation to @JohnnyArt Pavlou who won the Tides book. Get in touch with me via my website tidelineart.com and I'll get your book to you. Thanks for entering everyone and there will be more giveaways very soon. Love Nicola xx
Nicola if you ever find another could I buy it from you. That bottle rocks.
What is the oldest thing you've ever found?
Yaya Scotland. Proud to call it my home.
Happy Easter! : )
Congrats to the winner! Tides may come, and tides may go, but where ever Nicola larks...pipestems will appear!
My wife and I just adore your videos and we often comment on how articulate, enthusiastic, and nice you are. Keep it up and best wishes from California
Thank you very much ❤️
With so many wine bottles laying around a beach, I can only think that it must have been a really good party! ;)
many good parties by the looks of it!
Someone may already have said this, but the old photo of the Robert Douglas horse drawn lorry is in the exact place the ‘ghost of Jamie’ shot was taken for Outlander, spooky! Thank you for another interesting video Nic!
I live in Savannah Georgia. Years ago some aquantince of my husband knew where to. dig for 1700's bottles from English settlers. He and I were so excited. It had been about dug away but we found a few bottles. Then the city closed it and built a huge building where it had been. Paved Paradise to put up a parking lot. Remember that song.
An Easter basket of happy wishes to you Nicola. I'm so happy that I'm an extreme early riser and caught you and Si mudlarking live this morning. It was 4 AM my time in the Adirondacks of New York state when you came on and it made my morning coffee even better.
ooh thank you for getting up so early James! xx
I got up at 4 am here in Toronto to watch too ! So I am not crazy after all 😄
Yes, visit Scotland again! You must have a travel backpack just for emergency larkin', with Shoes for dancing, shoes for larkin', trowel, bag! 1962 wedding 💛 picture
Absolutely Cynthia. Next time and all future times I will be prepared xx
I love your reaction to the Ginger Beer! Matter of fact, I loved your reaction to everything you found "outside you comfort zone". You are amazing Nicola! Congratulations to your friends anniversary! There is no secret to a perfect marriage, the secret is to be willing to be married and committed.
Although I am now crippled, I know the joys of finding similar relics in my past; but it might have been called "Dustlarking" as mine were found in the remains of 'Ghost Towns" and deserted Mines in the remote Desert areas of South Australia! It's amazing how many 100+ years old bottles I found from the other side of the World! However my hundreds of kilos of pottery, pipe bits, fob watches, ornaments, etc have now been handed over to my partner, as she uses them along with smoothed glass "gems" washed from where rubbish was dumped over local cliffs into the sea a century ago to form jewellery for her Business called "Ghost and Coast". However we still have some great beach finds from when we visited Mull more than a decade ago! Thanks for the interesting videos! Cheers from S.A. !
Dustlarking sounds fun ❤️
The tag with HTI is clearly a Mud Larkers warning tag. High Tide Imminent! Love the wonderful old bottle finds and I think if I received an old bottle with my name on it, I would surely smile 😊
Ah great. I love the tag suggestion! Ok I'll look out for a bottle with your name. What is it?!
Brian Jones hope your day is going well.
I just spit my coffee laughing at that pipe stem. Only you, The Pipe Queen, can go to any country and find pipes within moments of arrival! 🤣😂
What a beautiful country, I'm so glad you brought us along! I hope you have a great time there. Cheers! 😊💞🤗
Thank you x
It´s exiting to watch you lark and also very calming at the same time - nice outdoors. I can understand people getting totally addicted to larking...history, thrill and fresh air. Gods peace!
Another Fabulous and very interesting episode, Amazing finds, you Truly are an Amazing Lady ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐👍
"Errrrr,...Nic, when we said, bring a bottle we mean't, ummm!"
Haha 😆
Even though there is no talent for art in me, I certainly enjoy your talents! A celebration of enduring love is the perfect punctuation for this episode. Happy Easter, Nicola and everyone.
What luck in the muck you had! Thanks for the shout out Mudbuddy!
She has the Gift doesn't she?
Beautiful Nicola. Amazing finds and history. The end brought tears to my eyes. You are such a beautiful soul. Thank you so much for your videos xx Teresa 🇦🇺💖
I'm constantly amazed at the things this girl constantly finds. I used to live in an older city in the US and there were a lot of 19th century Victorian houses and evidently quite a few people used to bury trash in thier back yards many years ago. We used to dig in random yards and found many old different colored bottles. My sister used to line them up on the window ledges in her kitchen and , when the sun came out the colors covered the kitchen walls. One particular bottle was sold to the museum by my sisters boyfriend. Evidently this particular pumpkin seed whiskey flask was a rarity and they were pleased to purchase it from him.
Beautiful, sweet tribute to your friends. Brought tears to my eyes.Well done ,Nic!
The anniversary tribute at the end was absolutely enthralling. Beautiful. Each shard a piece of art by itself.
Thank you xox
Thanks so much for the shout out! Very much appreciated!
Hope to meet you next time you’re up this way. That green top ginger beer is stunning. We have a couple of Douglas ginger beer bottles - they also made stonewares! 😊
Great video - thoroughly enjoyed seeing you in our area. Willie, Sarah and Jack Spaniels. 😊 x
Thank you. I'm thinking of coming up early July for a week or so. Are you there then? Perhaps you cd email me nicola.white@tidelineart.com and I can let you know when I'm coming xx
@@nicolawhitemudlark that’s fab - just emailed you now. Willie and Sarah. xx
Anytime I see a new bottle of ginger beer I buy it and enjoy the contents and put the new bottle in my collection. That one is a beauty.
Mouse ginger beer is traditionally served in Scotland with bubble n squeak 😝Happy Easter cheers Nicola 🍻
ha ha brilliant! x
😂😂
Always worth watching to the very end! Thank you, once again for a very enjoyable video.
Thank you Julia! xx
Mudlarking gear, don't leave home without it. Thank you for sharing your adventures.
lesson learned Dennis! I wont do that again :)
I wish I could come mudlarking one day. I'm super into history but Canada has NOTHING like the UK does.
I’ve collected ginger beers for over 30 years in Scotland, I can only imagine there was 1 whole stone ginger on the whole Scottish coastline and you found it! It’s a well known Scottish ginger beer we call a ‘Gilbert Rae’ in the mid 1980’s the factory closed down and during clearing, there were thousands of those ginger beers found in the cellars. 👍🍾
Thank you ❤️ yes I know I was sooo lucky!
The heart collage and music was very touching. My Chris and I would have been married 54 years this January but he died in 2020.
That was a really good outing Nicola, the location was an untapped source of interesting finds. Sometimes the best things come when you least expect them. You probably needed a bigger bag.
Thank you Samir and yes, I do. That day I simply didnt have a decent bag at all! x
The Scottish shore seems to be surrounded with bottles, this is probably part of an old Scottish tradition, even when those bottles are water bottles....
It is always a pleasure following you through your videos wherever you are. By the way, it also keeps my English alive,
thank you Nicola.. xx
Thank you so much Didier! So glad you enjoy. And yes, lots of bottles. I will go back again! xx
I suspect that some of those lovely old wine bottles were actually Buckfast bottles and one of the bottles looked suspiciously like a Barr's bottle, perhaps even an Irn Bru bottle. Nice location change Nicola. You'll find the West Coast even better
you need to learn Scots too :)
What a sweet tribute to your friend's parents at the end of the video. I hope they are just as in love now as they were 60 years ago :)
Thank you! oh yes they are xox
I caught you and Si at 6:30 am in the US. We were watching RUclips on his TV at his farm in Ohio and there the two of you were on the foreshore of the Thames. Fun to watch over coffee and Easter breakfast. Happy Easter to you both!
Thank you for watching!! X
I love the Douglas bottle and it proves you were meant to be on that beach at that exact time 😊 great video Nicola, as always 👌
Thank you Melanie! x
Nice to see you are enjoying the fact you found your bottles instead of losing one. ;)
So much fun watching you and Si, I caught the last half and your well choreographed dance routine! Maybe you and Si could do a monthly live episode.
Your Scottish mud looks like it needs a mud angel. 🤣
I carry NEOS ; New England Over Shoes. They come in knee high or over the ankle. Fold flat 100% water proof, fit over any shoe. Always ready for any adventure , anywhere. Have been to Peru, England and all over the US with me
great suggestion thanks Martha! x
PS. Having just watched and listened to the conclusion of this episode it seemed a particularly appropriate accolade to the celebration of a long and presumably happy marriage.
I say so because according to Beckwith 'making a song' for somebody was/is a particularly profound indication of intent regarding a courtship in the Highlands if not Scotland in general.
“Oh myGod” my expression seeing the green top of the full ginger beer. Wow. That’s gorgeous. I haven’t seen a green top ginger beer. I’d say it’s my favorite find across mudlarkers in quite a while. I know quite a few mudlarkers who are extremely envious. Was the fragment front a tooth pasted or powder? Gorgeous spot. Well done Nic. Happy Easter ✌️💚🐣 🐰
Thank you! and not far wrong on the pot - but not toothpaste!
What a beautiful tribute to your friends, and great finds just waiting there especially for that special weekend. Soooo love the heart at the end xx
Thank you Christine x
What a precious, precious gift for your long-married friends. Truly, 60 years is a huge milestone. This was one of my favorites of your videos (I love them all). Keep on finding stuff. I am approaching my 70th birthday and am not able to get to where I can beach comb very often. Your efforts keep my desire of the practice alive. Thank you, dear Nicola.
I watch your live last nite Easter morning for you and and Si were having such a great time I love that y’all brought us with you on you walk about and played in the mud!!
Thanks for joining us Moneka! xx
Between watching you and Si, my love for stoneware ginger beer bottles (something I didn't know existed until recently) has grown immensely!
Keep finding great stuff and cheers from Missouri.
Susan from Shelburne here. Enjoyable as always, Nicola, but I must add a special mention to the lovely tribute at the end. It was magical!
Thank you Susan! xx
I loved this show, one of your best. Brilliant.
Thank you very much! x
The broken stoneware bottle looks like the mineral water that Northern Mudlarks found in Fife with Dirty Secrets of Scotland. I think Willie has found a couple more since their visit. I think it’s German mineral water but not exactly sure. I'm so happy you managed a quick adventure. You were meant to find that ginger beer 🍺 ✌️💚🐣🐰
Thank you! x
I've only just started watching your channel. I'm stunned at the things that you find. It proves that one person's trash is another person's treasure.
Lovely surprise to see a spontaneous mudlark with fantastic finds in Scotland. 💛
We loved the Scotland mudlarking finds. Scotland the brave and historic information. From us in California a rousing thanks.
What an amazing day you had! You went out sooo far into the mud and were rewarded with that stunning ginger beer bottle :) We are keeping our diary free to meet up with you next time !! Thanks so much for the mention :) Nicole & Craig xo
I could walk that beach for days on end, OMG, incredible finds
woo woo is correct! what an ultimate ginger beer!!
Happy Easter Nicola and a huge Thank you to yourself and Si for this morning!
Thanks Linda x
Should find plenty of Scotch bottles, eempty of course😃
Pipes seem to follow you EVERYWHERE! I do love your enthusiasm when you find a treasure. It never seems to get old for you, or me either! Hope it was a great trip for you. Happy Easter!
Happy Easter!!!
IN•CRE•DI•BLE those 60 years story!!!
In spanish, they're called "BODAS DE DIAMANTE"
or "DIAMOND ANNIVERSARY" if preffered...!!!
The bottle story: Quiet entertaining, THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!
An extraordinay video, dear!!!
May the Good Lord bless you always!!!
🛐🛐🛐🛐🛐🛐🙏🙏🙏
Love the history on Gilbert Rae and the colour advertising was stunning.
Great wonderful scenery and looks like you hit an interesting spot. Hope that you enjoyed the party and did not drink too much !!
nope I was very good as I wanted to get up and lark the next day too!
Re: Clear glass bottles; In infant school in the mid 1950's the classmate I was sitting with was drinking the daily third of a pint of milk through those old waxed paper straws. I could see something dark coloured at the bottom of the bottle, it was a dead mouse. He survived the experience and rose to a very high rank in the army. Thanks Nicola.
no no no that's awful. I would never recover from that!! what a shock and how disgusting :(
😳🤢 Omg! I’d never be able to drink something again without inspecting it first! Heck, I won’t even use the toilet without looking in the bowl first to make sure there’s no snake or anything else in there and that’s all thanks to the Ghoulies movie from the 80’s. I’d def be traumatized if the milk mouse happened to me!
Whoa! For real?! I had a dead mouse in a sack of potatoes here in the States. I couldn't believe I didn't see or SMELL it before I got it home! That was only 20 years ago.
@@IratePuffin Oh yes! The snake thing has bothered me for years. lol Not helped by the fact that someone in our town had that very experience. A boa popped up when they were on the loo. It was retrieved by police and named Harpic, after a brand of toilet cleaner that proclaimed it could 'clean all the way around the bend'. It had escaped from next door and gone through the drains. I have less concern now as we have a sealed septic tank.
Eeeeew!
What a Great song and Great Art picture show Nicole! When I asked my Grandfather what it was like being married 70 years he replied, the first 60 years is the roughest the rest is all down hill. So please tell your friends! My Grandparents were married 72 years and researched the family (Shanks) back to 1250s Scotland, Murdock Shanks. So indeed, I will get there one day and Ireland and England as more than half my heritage are from these lands. And Indeed! Bottles are gifts that keep on giving and what beauties you found, well done! Many Thanks with Love, Light, Peace and Joy of Being and Larking! DaveyJO in Pennsylvania
Perfect composition, of region and it was a pleasure to watch. I won't click on any email links on general principal. Have a marvelous day
Very sensible!
Loved this episode Nicola, I’m an avid fan and this one was completely lovely thank you ❤
Thank you ❤️
Nicola, my jaw dropped when you pulled out that wonderful ginger beer bottle!
Me too Stuart!
It was so nice to see/feel your pleasure at finding that ginger beer bottle. Thank you for your videos!
Funny that ginger beer is back in vogue among hipsters. You turn the bottle to see it’s from 2018.
Your blogs are so very interesting Nicola, well done.
Wonderful finds!! Such a great place to visit!!💕😺😺😺
What a wonderful tribute love song at the end. Love it, great song too.
Happy Easter Nic, your fragment is a Holloway's ointment 👍 I've dug a few myself. Your ginger is a real top find well done.
Yes! You're right. And thank you
Gorgeous ginger beer with a teal top. A wonderful find!!!
That's absolutely awesome Nicola you going to Scotland !!! Beautiful place where you stayed !!! Love the Ginger Beer bottle & the water bottles especially the two that looked like blue 💙 frosted color !!! The heart that you made on the beach ⛱️ & filled it in with beautiful pieces of pottery was breathtakingly beautiful !!! You are so very talented Nicola !!! Wonderful video !!! ♥️🙂
Nicola, you find things wherever you go, so maybe you need an essentials bag to take when you are on the road! 😂 ! Love your videos 🥰💕❤️👍👍
Your 'horse-drawn lorry' at 23:15 would only be drawn by a horse if it had broken down. It's definitely a petrol- engined lorry. The 'snake-oil' cure-all must be exceedingly good because one of the problems included on the pot is 'bad legs'. Talk about a catch-all ointment!
Hearty congratulations to Douglas and Christine! I shouldn't think that much 'Aerated Water' was drunk!
Thank you! And yes you are right. Not much fizzy water to be seen :) more like champagne ginger! xx
Iron brew bottles 😁🏴♥️
Happy Easter again Nicola, I enjoyed seeing you and Simon getting luck in the muck on his live feed at 4AM this morning. This was a lovely lark in Scotland, I am so happy that you found so many lovely treasures. Thank you.
Thanks Debbie. Wow, thanks for getting up so early! it was great fun this morning but Im exhausted now!! :) x
Nice 1 m8, the Douglas bottle'd make a rippa pressie for anything includin a 60th anniversary. The muds a different colour, the area hasn't been used as much as the Thames, although there looked to be some sort of port area there. Nice job m8, glad you didn't gert stuck in the mud. But, you can get boots anywhere, you can't get your kit at a corner store. Good stuff m8, my Gram [Oldaker] came from up Scotland way. Grandfather her Hubby came Cornwall or Yorkshire [Bolitho]. Beanland came from Middlesex. Hoping you take some time and head down round that way. Thanks m8, you and yours stay safe and well
We all love you Nicola and you are wonderful!!
Thank you 💗
My original contact for mudlarking and a favorite!
Congrats lovely lady your a wonderful “mudder” ! 👍👍👍👍👍
just watching this video a year late. I am so inspired I just booked a stay in Dunfermline with whole intentions to find the douglas bottle. lol. but my dream find will be a clay pipe. Thank you for sharing the video. I love the fascinating history lessons.
It would be a great thing if you could take this work into schools and do talks as it’s an amazing way to engage the children in our past history, I thought the Douglas bottles were beautiful..!!
I love stoneware mugs. Fit a lot of coffee...fascinating story
Loved your pronunciation of Alloa. ;^) Nice finds from the Firth.
yes, I actually have no idea how to really say it!
@@nicolawhitemudlark It’s Al- o- ah. Say it quickly too. :^) Pity you couldn’t meet up with any of the mudlarkers up north of the border. Next time, eh? :^)
Hello Nicola
Lovely video. Love the history of the bottles. I want thank you when mention the 60th party, it will my parents 60th in August and it will be Sandra and I 35th in September more then half way there. Who would of thunk it. Thanks and take Care Chris and Sandra of Canada.
Thank you Chris and Sandra xx
Best ginger beer bottle I've seen! The color at the top a favorite of mine. Great luck and skill. Happy belated Easter 🐣 💓
those bottles aged so beautifully.
What a wonderful wedding photo!
Nicola, what a great set of finds! I just sent you an email about the R. Douglas company. Douglas died 4 years after marrying Mary Beverage (ironic name, considering the business). She inherited the company and amassed quite a substantial fortune. Her story is even more fascinating! The company was eventually purchased in 1963 by the company that manufactures Irn Bru!
Thank you! I shall read that tomorrow xx
You should take si with you next time he would love the bottles as much as you did xxxx
Love from the old lady in Texas God bless you always and forever
Congratulations on such nice finds, I wish I could go mudlarking. The area I live in doesn't have the same kind of history. Thanks for the nice ending to your video with the music and the pictures.
Thanks Dan!
Lpve it all! The finds, the history, the old limekiln site! Wow! Thank you.
Thank you Leisa xx
@@nicolawhitemudlark Thank YOU, dear lady.
one of the best parts of my week are when your videos appear, my determination to do some mud larking remains at a high level, cheers
Im so glad you enjoy them my friend. Love from me xx
Great finds no matter where you go! Awesome video! I totally enjoyed watching! Thanks so much 🙏 💓 ☺️
I loved today's explorations and finds, thank you. Asa young adult, I often went mudlarking in East Oxford where I was brought up. Lots of opportunies to find things stuck in the riverbanks|
Happy eastern everyone. If there are any outlander fans here they should have seen that the picture you showed at 23,15 minutes is a filmlocation out the first episode. That is fun. But you did great on those finds. Ginger bottle is just perfect. Till next time
What a lovely place to explore, definitely worth a return trip for a longer visit and take some fellow mudlarkers with you (maybe the Mudpies?)
What a beautiful Ginger Beer bottle. Great find. You should put your tools in a backpack so you would have them at hand.
Wow ! I think you found the "elephants graveyard" of bottles, you will have to go back for more😉
nicola absolutely gorgeus places and some amazing fines
Happy Easter to you, Nic 🐣🐰
I'm off to Scotland for a fortnight in July/August, so this video of your's, just made me, over-the-moon happy! 🥰
Love the ginger beer bottle & the blob top Douglas bottles😊 💚

hello from Denmark 🌸 🌱
ooh wonderful! Have a super time. It's such a beautiful place. There is so much to explore and see. xx
Very pleasing to the eye and pleasant to listen to. I find myself watching these at night to fall asleep to.
