- Make 1 is the most invisible increase in knitting. I show you how to work both a right- and left-leaning M1 stitch.
The sweater on the mannequin behind me can be found here:
www.ravelry.com...
you are a very good teacher. I struggled with this stitch FOR YEARS.
That's not good news. I'm contemplating starting a hat that's a pique rib hat ( I had to Google that) that has m1. I just struggled thru an all knit with vague instructions. Lol
If the pattern doesn't tell you which Make 1 stitch to do (right or left), it is your choice. Most people choose to do Make 1 Left when given the choice.
that was the question I had in my head...lol
@@salobrena6442 me too
I can’t see the video close up. The example your showing is too far away
Thank you Staci, I've been knitting for 70 years and didn't know many of your stitches, including these. I never have trouble seeing what you are doing by just watching on full screen, and repeat if necessary (or forgotten!)
I just “discoverd” you. You are a very good teacher. Very clear explanations Thank you from Switzerland
I'm ecstatic that I found you again!! You are the best for clear explanations!! I have learning disabilities and struggle with instructions, so finding your site has been fantastic!! Thank so very much for your tutorials!!
Shaaron…So sad but she passed away. I just learned of her passing also. 😢
So helpful!! Now I know why my m1s made holes. I must say, your video tutorials are my favorite! Anytime I search for a new technique, I type in the name of the technique and 'very pink' so your videos come up! Thank you!!!
@abasscase Sometimes the pattern will tell you that you need to work on or the other (especially if you're working mirror-image increases), but if the pattern doesn't specify, you can use whichever one is your favorite. I prefer the M1-left stitch.
I just want to thank you SO MUC for making all of these videos. They have helped me try SO MANY new things. seriously. I wish I could give you a MASSIVE hug!!!
Staci, these videos are great example of the benefits to the new Knitter's Pride Day & Nite needle set! I just watched your review of them this morning, then tonight came here for a refresher on the m1R/m1L. As I was staring closely at screen to see which way you were picking up the bar, I instantly wished you had your black/birch needles to turn and let the pink yarn show up better. Thanks for all your tutorials. Even though I have been knitting over 60 years, I need sometimes to refresh my techniques memories. 👍👍🌺🌺
I'm a beginner knitter so I really appreciate these clear instructions. Thank you!
@TheSilentPrincess You are correct. :) Make 1 increases can't be done at the very ends of the rows. It won't do any harm to your pattern to do the M1s after the first stitch, and/or before the last stitch. This will actually keep the edges of your work looking really smooth.
You are the very best knitting instructor ever! So helpful and clear, perfectly explained and demonstrated - I love all your Slow Motion videos and all your regular speed videos - whenever I need assistance I only look at yours now for everything! Thank you SO MUCH!! Ann from UK!
Love your tutorials. Brisk and to the point. So easy to watch and easy to learn from. Thanks.
@TonjaTang It isn't about the tightness of the stitches. If you are not putting the correct twist on the M1 stitch, it will leave a huge hole. If you are, for instance working a M1 Left (picking up the bar from front to back) and knitting it through the front loop (instead of the back), it will leave a hole. Same thing if you're working a M1 Right (picking up the bar from back to front) and knitting it incorrectly through the back loop. Watch the video again to make sure you're getting it.
Thank you so much Staci! You have helped more than you'll ever truly know. I've been battling cancer and over illnesses over the last 9 years and knitting and other maker-ly things have gotten me through some extremely hellish times. I would not have been able to make many of the things I've loved without your help. So know what you have done by taking the time to share your love and knowledge with us really means something and is valuable. God Bless you as you have blessed all of us! 💚🙏🏻
@fpwr11 Your pattern will tell you when it's time to do a M1R or a M1L. If your pattern doesn't specify, you can do whichever one you prefer. Generally, the rule is that if you're adding a stitch close to a right side edge, you M1L to fit in properly with that edge, and M1R for an increase close to a left side edge.
I always knew I was doing something wrong, because I had holes, but I could never find a video that explained it as simply and easily as yours just did.
Many thanks!
@trixieknits Yes, on the first row you only have one stitch to knit before you M1R and slip marker. That number will increase in subsequent rows.
Thank you so much for this short and helpful video. I was creating holes in my knitting and you helped me fix that.
Your tutorials are always the best ones, Staci! You make it look really easy :) Thank you very very much! x
@cpnesmith The stitch is the same whether you're right or left handed. The only difference is that you're holding the working yarn in your left hand. Search for my video "Lefties vs Righties" for more info.
This is such a tricky one for me so I appreciate the nice clear instructions. I’ve come to depend on your channel for that also I always recommend your videos to new knitters
@fpwr11 Just pick whichever M1 stitch is your favorite! Most people prefer M1L, since it's a bit easier to work.
I watched you again and think I answered myself. If I pick up with my left needle from front to back then knit it, it would be like knitting a yarn over, which would leave a bigger hole. However, I could still avoid the transfer by picking up the bar from back to front then it would knit like yours, giving that little twist to make it look more "real". Thanks for your big yarn. It is easy to see.
@dlk6g If the pattern doesn't indicate which one to use, then it's your choice. Most people prefer M1 left, since it's a bit easier to work. (That's always my choice, too.)
Thank you so much, so clear and easy! Videos like these are far more informative to me than trying to understand written instructions :)
Great refresher tutorial... been doing this wrong all week.
Maria - I think you're getting confused. I don't reference the "back" or "front" of the loop you pull up - I talk about the back and front of the work (right side/wrong side), and how you approach the loop with your needle to get it mounted for the correct twist. When you pull up the loop, you slide your needle under it from "back to front" for a M1R, then from "front to back" for M1L.
Love your tutorials! Easy to watch and follow along. Thank you so much.
thank you so much. I am picking up knitting after knitting as a child. Thanks so much. So easy to understand!!
@KnittaMortis Sorry you're having trouble. You can always increase the quality of the video, by clicking on the number in the lower right corner that says "360". Select 720 to watch the video in HD. Additionally, you can click the arrows in the lower right corner to make the video full screen.
Thank you..I appreciate all the information and instructions that you provide.
I only wish my fingers would " flick" the way yours do. Thank you again, I am a better knitter in gratitude to you...💛
@verypinkknits
I would like for you to know that after having trouble making M1L and M1R. I have been trying to close the M1L and M1R and have tried about 100 toes and they always have the holes. The statement above just cleared it all up and I have just made my first perfect M1L and M1R. Thanks so much for your help.
Hi Mara - this is one of the increases that EZ explains in her books - I believe another one (and the one you may be looking for) is "knit 1 below" or K1B. You can search my channel page for this video - it's already out there. :)
I think I'm coming up with the same result by picking the bar up with my left needle so I don't have to transfer it from the right to the left. (being left-handed, that is more natural for me). For M1 right, I use my left needle to pick up the bar from the back, then knit . For M1 left, I pick up the stitch from the front with my left needle and knit through the back. Does that sound right?
When instructed to m1 between last k st and before next p st, should the m1 be a k st or a p st. ? 1:32 1:32
Thank you so much for this video, and the others you post. You are definitely becoming my go-to for knitting instructions!! Please keep up the good work!
Thank you so much! Straight to the point. Much appreciated.
I am working on a shawl and for the life of me, could not figure out why I was getting a hole. Thank you for clarifying.
😊
If the pattern doesn't specify M1R or M1L, it is knitter's choice. You can do either. But most people find M1L stitches easier to work than M1R.
Thank so much this is very clear for me, but in my pattern I have 15 sts and show me K1, (M1,K1) to end - 29 sts...I do not really understand how I can get 29 sts? Can you help me please? thank you so much.
Would you please do a video tutorial on how to correct a make one right, e.g. I’ve done a make one left instead of a make one right. I need to know how to make this correction when I discover this mistake after knitting a few rows. And vice versa. Love your idea tutorials.
For the baby sack (I already purchased pattern) - for the collar, Row 1 - where it says to knit to marker, M1R, sm - after I slip the first three for the i-cord, there is only one stitch before the marker. I'm confused as to what to do.
@jessicajasper Thank you! I'm glad my videos are helping you! :)
Thank you for showing how to m1 in knitting.
@MsPoppy1967 You shouldn't have holes in your work when you do M1s...they should be nearly invisible. Chances are that you're not twisting the stitch as you work it. Watch the video again to make sure you're doing it correctly - if you're picking up the bar from back-to-front, you need to knit through the front loop of the stitch. If you're picking up the bar from front-to-back, you need to knit through the back loop of the stitch. The twist is what keeps you from having holes in your work.
this the best of the M1's
Hello! Can you show us the method of EZ for increases to the right and the left?
Thanks. You are great.
thank you for these mini lessons. i tried to learn how to knit about 20 yrs ago just by following the instructions in a how-to book, but I stopped because I was really bad at it. I have found that with any kind of crafting, I learn better with visual aid. Hopefully, I'll stick with it and improve as I practice I always had issues with the tension in my work, both with crocheting and knitting. Some of my stitches are really loose and the others are really tight. What am I doing wrong and how can I fix it?
Getting good tension takes practice, this video may help you: ruclips.net/video/sK11ZFf2CnA/видео.html
Can you do a tutorial how to make the cardigan that you are wearing? I want to make the same kind of cardigan but I dont know how to, the armholes part always is the hardest part for me
I'm looking for a video to help me FIX a missed M1 . thank you.
Yay! Thank you so much! You have a very clear way of communicating. So very helpful!
This was easy to follow - thank you very much
My pattern calls for a slip first Stitch and then M1, yo, k1 then continue with fishnet Stitch. Won’t this increase Stitch count by 2?
Yes, M1 and YO are both increases.
Is there a trick to remembering which is M1R and M1L? I can never remember which is which. #OldAge
I'm working on a pair of socks (Achilles Heal by Knitty) now that use the Chevron Stitch, which includes M1R and M1L. I'm a left-handed knitter and knit 'mirror' style (continental from left to right) and I've never had any problems with these stitches before, but in my pattern there are small holes where I make 1. What am I doing wrong? It is because the needles and stitches are so small? I'm using US size 1 needles and fingering weight yarn.
"Mirror" knitting is sort of a whole different ball of wax, and I'm not all that knowledgeable about how it changes different stitches and patterns. But Make 1 stitches with holes are usually because the stitch is not twisted properly. I explain it in this video better than I can here in the comments!
Hello! I have a problem, I just don't see the "back" or "front" when you lift the loop. I mean, I don't see any difference. Can you help me? I have a pattern of a sweater and I can't go ahead because I have lots of M1R and M1L for the neck. May I make a different increase? Thank you so much, your videos are soooo helpful!
That explains my hole i made today in the train. Did the second one without knitting through the back loop. Lucky for me i only had to do it twice in my hat so it's practically invisible haha
Staci, I was wondering instead of transferring the stitch from the right to the left needle, why isn't the stitch just picked up with the left needle from front to back, then isn't it ready to knit from there? Thanks.
I taught myself how to knit from a book around 40 yrs ago. Now that I watch your videos I see I’m making many mistakes. I’m knitting a baby sweater from top down ( new for me) and the pattern calls for M1 K1. Does that mean I increase 1 stitch and knit the increased stitch or do I make the stitch knit it and knit another regular stitch as well? How I wish there were iPads 40 yrs. ago. Your videos are wonderful.
m1 and m1r and m1l what different with 3 of them ?
Staci addresses this at the very top of the comments.
Absolutely excellent video!
Your videos are so helpful, thank you for sharing. I have a question in regards to M1, if the pattern does not specify whether to Right Lean or Left Lean a M1, in that it just says M1, which one is default, M1L or M1R?
If the pattern doesn't specify, it's knitter's choice. I always choose M1L, I think it's easier to work.
VeryPink Knits , thank you so much for your reply and help, cheers
Love your videos--they are my go-to whenever I need to know how to make a particular stitch/CO/BO. I was wondering about that pink cardigan on the dummy behind you in the video. I love it--it's exactly what I'm looking for and if love to knit one up. Any chance you could point me to the pattern for it??
Thank you for the comment. More info on that sweater on my Ravelry page here:
www.ravelry.com/projects/verypink/-221-summer-cardigan
+VeryPink Knits awesome! Thank you!!!
I am knitting fingerless gloves, but it has a thumb. The pattern says, in thumb M1,K1,M1. No left or right. Should I do one left & other right? How to determine when to select left or right, if pattern doesn't tell you.I don't even remember where I got the pattern, to ask for a help from the designer. Can you help me?
I like to put a M1R on the right side of the thumb, and a M1L on the left side. But you can switch that around, as long as you're consistent throughout the whole thumb gusset.
Thanks, I tried it & it looks good.
Thank You!
I knit continental style, and my friend just showed me how to m1R, and m1L, the other night. I need to RUclips it for refresher. It looks like what you are doing is what she showed me, but I want to make sure that I do it like you are showing even though I'm knitting Continental (and it looks like you are knitting English in this vid) or should I do something differently?
The stitches are worked in the same way...the only difference is the hand you use to hold the working yarn. Nothing else changes.
VeryPink Knits
Thanks for the quick response :)
Thank you! straight to the point, perfectly explained. :)
Hii I know i how to do the M1L or M1R but I can't tell which one is which. How do you distinguish while knitting them? Thanks!
pricilla vargas - I don't think I understand your question...I explain the difference between M1R and M1L in the video.
I am using a bulky weight yarn (5) and a size 9 needle. I am getting a hole. Am I doing something wrong, or is it the size of the needle and weight of the yarn?
did you make sure to twist the M1 stitch when you knit/purl into it? without the twist, it is structurally the same as a yarn over
You rock! Thanks... super easy to learn!
Love this! Your video is easy to understand and follow. I like the way you explain the M1R and M1L. I haven't had a pattern specify, so in general is M1 "technically" an M1R?
+Becky Schmidt - if the pattern doesn't specify, it doesn't matter which one you use. I always default to M1L, because I find them easier to work.
+VeryPink Knits Excellent! I have a purse pattern I want to try, and a couple little knit critters, so I'm excited to give em a go! Thanks!
excellent thank you
You're the best!
what if the pattern only has m1 and you don't know which one to do?
Very helpful,thank you☺️
I'm knitting a hat. I'm supposed to have 70 stitches but I only have 69. Could I use this method to make the increase invisible?
Yes - using a Make 1 stitch to get your count back on track is exactly what I would do. :)
Hi! I love your videos! I was looking at a sweater pattern that only said M1 for the raglan increases. It doesn't specify which ones to use. How do you know which one to do?
PureFuckinMetal - it's usually most attractive to "mirror" M1 stitches, either with a M1L followed by a M1R, or a M1R followed by a M1L (to complete each raglan increase). There is no right or wrong - just two different looks.
Ah ok cool! Thank you for replying! :)
@VeryPink Knits Hi. I have a quick question. I'm in the process of making a hat and my pattern says to do a M1. Does that mean I would have to use both M1L and M1R or just M1L (as I have heard from another RUclipsr that you should do if the pattern instructions says to do a M1 without specifying whether to use both M1L and M1R).
Thank you.
Hi! Is M1 the same as inc 1? You are my "go-to" for knitting lessons on RUclips. Thanks!
YolieP - not necessarily. If a pattern says "inc 1", it just means to increase one stitch, without specifying which stitch to use. That usually means that it's the knitter's choice - you can do a M1, a kfb, M1B (make 1 below), or any increase you like.
Very very helpful. THANK YOU!
Very helpful, thank you very much for your time !
I understand now! Thank you very very much!
very clear and helpfull, thank you!
thanks so much for the video. I couldn't understand why I was getting a hole.
Your tips really help so much. sewinsuzie
Thank you 🐨
Very helpful thank you
Ok. Thank you so much.
Nice video, but it needs to be closer up. Couldn't see what you were doing.
It worked perfectly...thanks very much! (:
Thank you. I was doing it all wrong.
You rock! :D
For me, this movie wasn't helpful. The camera was too far away from the knitting to see what exactly was happening with the yarn.
Look at it in the full screen mode. Much easier to see that way.
DK in the knitting pattern
Thank you for your help what does DK in the pattern mean knitting mittens
It is a weight of yarn, you can google it for more info about the yarn weight system.
Nice
ajada5, so im NOT the only man in the world who (secretly) knits!
O
You work with yarn too small! And you are working too fast without a good enough zoom so I can't actually see what you're doing.
