What an incredible touching and comprehensive review of this movie. I have NEVER seen any reviewer approach this movie with so much respect and love. I had tears in my eyes by the end of the review, seeing Gabe come to take Tim Robbins to heaven... THANK YOU for such a wonderful time , just sitting back and listening to two great guys talk about one of my fave movies.

That scene where Danny Aiello speakes of letting go, and seeing that the demons are really angels helping you along the way . . . I don't give a shit what anyone believes, it's irrelevant because his performance there is so goddamn sincere, I tear up just thinking of it.
Nice to see this review return. I miss that sofa :(

From my viewing/repeat viewings : Jacob dies in a state of (drug induced) confusion and terror, coupled with regret/guilt about the death of his son. His visions from that moment on eventually lead to a point where he understands the circumstances and causes of his death, and is then led to a point of absolution for his guilt. And it’s a very painful journey for him. He has to not only reconcile the matter of his betrayal and death, but also his (self perceived) guilt for his sons death, and fantasies of infidelity.

I've always loved this movie. When it came out in 1990 it was trashed by critics and (perhaps because of bad marketing) a box office flop also... just like The Thing (1982), JL became a cult classic after 2 decades.

Arguably a top 10 horror film that has aged very, very, well. The pathos and atmosphere are nearly perfect. Every emotion is earned. Elizabeth Peña, Tim Robbins, and Danny Aiello have never been better. In fact I’d say the latter 2 deserved awards recognition that year.

I didn't think he was dead the entire time. I think he was somewhere in a fever dream and a realm of reconciling his soul to move on and as things get more surreal the further away from life he moves. I cry every time at the ending. Screw anyone who is disappointed by it. This movie is so deep and cryptic. I love it.

One thing especially younger viewers probably almost can't envision is the fact that when you've seen this movie alone in 1991 you'll be left alone with your thoughts and questions after the watching experience. If you type in "Jacobs Ladder 1990" in google you've get 266.000 hits but back then your questions remained unanswered. I was 14 years old when I first watched the movie and I found my personal answer in the assumption that the dying Jacob Singer needed a answer to what just happened when his comrades turned at each others and he was deadly wounded. What a unpleasant but yet marvelous experience this movie was.. scared me for life and many thanks I appreciate it.

A really intelligent and sensitive review... I have had many arguments with friends over the ending. I LOVE it - same as you guys. I think some people feel robbed by it - "and he woke up and it was all a dream" type of ending. But I don't agree at all, it's much more meaningful than that - the ending is totally consistent with everything in the film, it's not like it's been tacked on. Everything is there.

One thing that is interesting is that Jacob experiences different forms of the afterlife when he dies and comes back. Purgatory, his life with Jezebel where everything is confusing, Heaven when his son is alive and he's with his family, and Hell when his picture is stolen and he's brought down to the famous corridor scene. Eventually he chooses heaven where Gabe is waiting for him. Beautiful

I agree, this movie is very under rated. I think that one reason might be that the story line is so interesting-that there might be military experiments going on. I know that I was rooting for Jacob and his friends to get to the bottom of these horrible experiments. When I first saw the movie, I too was disappointed when I realized what was actually going on. Until I decided to watch it again. Once I knew what was going on, I could appreciate the film for what it is. Excellent review, guys, as always!

This one of my all time favourite films. There have been many imitators of this films, like Hellraiser:Inferno, Hellraiser:Hellseeker, Session 9 (which I haven’t seen and need to see), Stay (another film that I haven’t seen and need to see), and Triangle (which was really good), but it was actually Angel Heart which was the first to do it.

This movie is so amazing and Off The Shelf Reviews reviewing it brings it home how much seeing it really meant. The eeriest part of the film to me was always the palm reader at the party. She gave me chills even before I knew or was cognizant of what the ending would be. I agree the chiropractor was amazing and the scenes w/the deceased son was so moving. Not sure if anyone ever drew a parallel between this and the original Carnival of Souls. Both these films felt so impactful in their respective explorations and such and I saw them both in 1990 or 91 and Carnival had been re released not long before that. Also you guys did amazing reviews of George Romero's Night/Dawn/Day Dead films! Thanks for your great work! Stay strong, stay safe, and happy new year!

I always liked the ending, Jacob actually died in Vietnam, giving his life for his country and his friends, like so many thousands of others. He can now rest in peace, his suffering is over, the undiscovered country before him. It's okay that he resisted, fought to the last, who wouldn't? But this journey is now over, a new one has begun. Because in the end it's ok. It's okay, all any of us can ever hope for deep down is that death is not the end and one day we will united with those we loved and lost. It's okay...

  • @Kaiyanwang82
    @Kaiyanwang82 Год назад +1

I am of the opinion that all three (the ones I know at least) deleted scenes should have been kept. A single argument to remove Jezebel's deleted is that it could suggest there are no demons or angels while I think they have a degree of reality even within Jacob's (or anyone dying) mind.
Jezebel is there as the guy she dances with during the party, and the creature from the ceiling. It's like demons really look like in the movie universe with no "mask". She is indeed one of them, she is there when they carry out the operation because Jacob is not moving on. I disagree she is trying to keep him from moving on, she is still trying to move him away from the family and the son, which are the true "issue". She just uses other methods. Again, she would not be otherwise there with a guy that tells Jacob that he is dead.
The hospital rescue scene is also great because the chiropractor assumes a pose of an Angel with the Sword.
The doctor is also an angel I think, just a fallen one that protects Jacob but has kind of lost the plot while the chiropractor is 100% focused and also dislikes the methods of the demons. But they all have the same aim.

Great review chaps, may I recommend a couple of films, one of which was also recommended by another subscriber here - Japanese Zombie film " I am a Hero" Influences include Romero, and has a few nods to the video game "Left 4 Dead" it's brilliantly shot I'd put it up there with "Train to Busan". Right up your street I'd say! Also just seen a German Horror / Thriller called "The Golden Glove" based on a serial killer in the red-light district of Hamburg in the 70's. It's genuinely disturbing, the young German actor who plays the killer gives a stunning performance, and a few very funny scenes in there too. Future cult classic for sure. Keep on doing what you're doing fellas!

The scene were Jezebels eyes turn black is imo one of the best jumpscares of all time, and that is how you do a jump scare, no loud music whatsoever and it was great. Horror films today are terrible with the jumpscares, the key to a good jumpscare is to not do them often and don’t have that annoying loud bass sound with it.

Davidson Thompson as the evil nightmare surgeon......oh god. From the horrible journey through the bloodied asylum, to the horror of THAT operating theatre, outdated equipment, squeaky wheels, the uncaring, cold dialogue "you're dead, you've been killed, HOME? this is your home!" the pulling on of surgical rubber gloves......the one scene I ALWAYS remember when someone mentions Jacob's Ladder. Even when I've gone in for surgery, it makes me think of it......shudder, and as for the needle into Jacob's forehead......just no

I love this movie, the ending is beautiful and one of the only times this kind of ending works so well in a film.

I remember this as a teen. It blew my mind. But did the drugs firefight, etc, really happen? Or did he make it up, survivors guilt? Type of thing????
