I live in Ohio (right next to Indiana!) -- and I live in Canal Winchester, OH - where there was a restaurant called The Wigwam - owned by Evelyn Barnett! She was a dear friend our family . . and she was known for her cream and sugar pie . . . honestly NO ONE could make cream and sugar pie like she did - (there is a bit of a knack to it) - her would have a crusty bubble or two on top and when you took your fork for that bite cream would run out . . I haven't had C&S Pie like that since.... People came from all over for her C&S pie! I miss her and her pie!!
MEANS "LISTEN TO HIM" !!!
I'm chuckling because you are stirring and stirring and your stove isn't on . . . Opps!
Ya, I make my pie totally different.... I don't pre-bake the crust - and the cream, sugar butter etc., is lightly stirred and poured into the pie - then baked... Is not hard custard..but a creamy soft custard with spots of cream running out . .
Ark at EE means listen to him
I'm a Hoosier through and through, having lived in New Haven, Indiana all my nearly 60 years of life. I'm so glad you're attempting our State Pie!
Born and bred Hoosier here too!
I’m also a Hoosier . I’m 43 and I’ve lived in Indianapolis all my life.
@@Ajs8180 I was west. Pittsboro/brownsburg area.
@@Ajs8180Indianapolis here as well! Noblesville area.
I grew up in Ft. Wayne. Now live in Bloomington.
Our version of Blind Date was called The Dating Game. Elana is so precious. She is growing up and she is very entertaining.
Remember the episode the serial killer was on? crazy.
Yup. Rodney Alcala. The Dating Game Killer
I’m originally from Indiana and I LOVE sugar cream pie! I have an excellent recipe, if you need it. Sugar cream pie is especially good in graham cracker crust.
I think Graham cracker isn't available outside of the United States.
It's funny I am from Michigan and have never heard of it. Indiana is the closest state to my home. I think I better travel more. Oh wait my wife went to college in Indiana and she just told me she will make me one😅. It sounds good.
I'm from Pa. and I've heard of it.
Have your neighbors tried your American cooking? If yes, what did they think?
I'm from Indiana and sugar cream is our state pie. I prefer mine frozen & then half warmed over, half cool half warm. I've seen some people make these before overseas & they cover it in cinnamon and I don't think that's how it's done here. Maybe a sprinkle, but not alot. I love your videos and keep up the great work!
Agreed. Something about brulee does seem "English" & "Fancy" -- doesn't work with Amish pie
I think the next Indiana food they need to try is a nice giant breaded tenderloin. I can just imagine Mr H’s eyes going wide at the size of a sandwich as big as his head. 😂
Hoosier here as well. I live close to Wick’s Pies in Winchester Indiana which makes one of the best Sugar Cream pies!
@barmstrong77 Do you know anyone that puts alota cinnamon on the sugar cream pie? I'm in Muncie.
@@elainesrottenbottom296No I do not. I work in Muncie and from Farmland!
Love me a pie from Wick’s. ❤❤❤
I wrote this before I saw the episode by the way.
Love that Mrs. H is representing Indiana! As a native Hoosier and member this is awesome
i have always liked a sugar creme pie and if you use brown sugar you have a brown sugar pie....the corn starch is what helps the pan clean out nice. add maple syrup, brown sugar to make a maple brwn sugar pie....
Oooo. That sounds good. I like to make pecan pie with brown sugar and maple syrup for the flavor.
The Dating Game. Great music by Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass.
Hoosier is pronounce "Who's your" even though it has the "ier" in it. Sugar Cream Pie is from our next door state. It is very rich so narrower pieces are served than the "regular"-sized slice of other pies. Great job on the crust and the entire pie as well! Kudos!
I'm going to have to disagree on the pronunciation although it may be due to where in Indiana you're from. Living in Evansville, I learned to pronounce it, 'Hoo Jer.
@@ironnoodle7992 I'll have to ask my sister as she lives in E-ville, too. I've never heard it pronounced with a "J" sound.
HOO-zhur
@@markhamstra1083 Thanks! I couldn't quite decide if it should be the "z" or not. I've heard it both ways. :)
Who- zer.
Here's a suggestion for when you cut cakes, pies, etc..... cut from one side to the other, then turn and cut to make 4 equal sized pieces. If you want smaller size pieces, simply turn so you can cut each slice from one side to the other, cutting the quarter sized pieces in half, making 8 equal sized pieces... just thought I would share... 😊😊😊😊 enjoyed watching your video!
Pillsbury does make a refrigerated unroll-type pastry. Except it's round like, you know, a pie 😜
Yet another American Pie that I've never had! Thank You Mrs. H for introducing me to this classic.
I was actually going to consider suggesting sugar cream pie to you guys. My duty as a Hoosier kinda demanded it. Glad you liked it.
For me "liked" is an understatement, I loved it
You can probably make variations with lemon or orange zest into the cream.
Alana is so adorable 🤩 🥰 Actually in the 90s,. There was a dating show called "Blind Date" that was hosted by Roger Lodge. But "The Dating Game" in the 70s hosted by Chuck Wollery. And I believe there was a reboot for a few years in the 90s of "The Dating Game". Is sugar cream pie and shoofly pie one of the same but with a different name since Shoofly pie is made by the Amish and Mennonite community in Lancaster, County, PA
In America we have corn flour, corn starch, and cornmeal, they are all slightly different things.
I really appreciate you guys taking the time to research what to cook and eat. Shows you guys truly respect America and our culture. ❤️
Love Bob Andy Sugar Pie
I liked when Elana gave a big Howdy! while y'all were in Texas! 😄
I am an American and I never heard of this pie before. I live in the deep South and that pie reminds me of custard pie that we eat. I love a good pie and pecan used to be my favorite. My favorite pies are a pie that is made with Ritz crackers. That pie is made with pecans and egg whites and crushed Ritz crackers. When I tasted that pie for the first time I had a hard time realizing that the pie was made of crackers. My other favorite pie is a German Chocolate pie that is made with chocolate, pecans, and coconut.
I’ve never had sugar crème pie but it looks delicious! Glad you enjoyed it. 😄🥰
I've lived in Indiana for 67 years. I've mastered the art of sugar cream pie. There is a restaurant in Bloomington Indiana that sells whiskey pie. Sugar cream with a tiny drizzle of whiskey over the top and then whipped cream! OMG!!
Hey Kathy. What restaurant is that? I need to go next time I’m in Btown for a game.
@@amys8630 it was called Irish Lion, but I just went to their website and it seems they have closed down. Maybe a COVID casualty. It was a Btown legend! Hopefully it will reopen.
@@kathyefranklin I remember it. I used to go there when I was at IU back late eighties/early nineties.
@@amys8630 I just was informed that they are closed down for the season and will reopen on Jan 10th!! I forgot that they do that every year.
I live in Bloomington.
Hoosier here as well...moved to Florida at 58 and now in Ohio.
Never had it, but honestly, I would love to try it!
I was born in Indiana but raised in Texas. I love sugar cream pie but nobody down this way has a clue as to what it is.
You guys are so cute! Your sweet and lovely family is a joy and the fact you guys are foodies too!! Win win for us!! I have never made this pie either. I'm so proud of you guys baking these pies, too. Baking is much harder than cooking in my view. It's more precise and it just is more complex especially pies and crust and all. I had a chef friend who told me to take stuff out of oven before you think it's done as it will continue to cook! I used to burn muffins, cookies, pie crust! He was right. It works!! Same with meat or anything on BBQ! Take it out cover the meat loosely with foil. Anyway, just a tidbit that works for me! So I told my 15 yr granddaughter a few days ago after she burned the bottoms of the rolls on her first attempt at canned cinnamon rolls to use the method of taking out earlier they will still be ok. She was so upset. We ate them anyway because she made them! I told her how many I have burned too over the years! Bravo and your pie looks amazing!!. All the food you do is amazing! I'm going by your reviews to decide if I will try! I loved your Texas BBQ and Tex Mex videos. I used to live in Houston, Texas in early 80s and remember it fondly!! Yes, I'm old LOL! ! Lol Love you guys and sending hugs from Mississippi!!❤❤❤
Your granddaughter made one of my favorite things, cinnamon rolls. The burnt bits would be tasty too. Hope she keeps up making them and other food.
Thank you for your lovely comments. Hugs back from Bristol
@@Mrhandfriends ❤️❤️❤️
" Baking is much harder than cooking in my view" You're so right. Cooking is an art, baking is science.
I love sugar pies. But a banana cream pie is the best
Missourian here! Heard of Sugar Cream Pie but never tried it! Sounds like a sweet and rich egg custard pie❤❤❤❤. but without the eggs
Love you reppng my state. Go Hoosiera!
Greetings from Indianapolis, Indiana. Glad to see you enjoyed your sugar cream pie. Enjoyed watching as always.
We had a version of "blind date" called "the dating game" i'd suspect somebody needs a British English to American English translator.
WV here! Baking with H, Baking with H ;). Used to visit Grandparents who lived in the southern end of Indiana. My Mom was born in Terre Haute, In. Alana. Such a cutie. I’m going to be floored when she comes up with more to say.
Looks great, but I've never heard of (Deep South). Must be a regional thing (North or Midwest).
Never even heard of this pie. Wow!
If I had to guess, I would say "'Ark at ee!" probably means "Look at you!", but I might be wrong. 😂
Happy New Year Mr H, Mrs H, Alana, and Foosa!! I have not had that before but I agree it looks so much like a creme brulee pie.. Does it taste the same? Yes the Blind Date game in UK and in the USA during the 1970s was The Dating Game..
Very very similar to creme brulee
Get that girl some pie. She is 'eddy'. LOL!! Always fun to watch ya'll cook. Already tried the Shoo Fly but I never heard of this one. Sorry about the joke in Chat today. I'm a bad boy. I think I will try this one. When I make Coconut Cream it has a similar setup. Either with eggs or corn starch. I will have to try this one.
Hi guys, just an fyi, Hoosier is pronounced like who-zhr (like "zure"). The pie looks delicious 😋
I was just thinking about Sugar Cream pie yesterday. A pers II n from Indiana is called Hoosier pronounced (who sure) and no one knows why. I am from Indiana too.
Hello, y’all! From the great state of Tennessee, the “Volunteer State!” 😀🙏🏾🇺🇸❤️
Born and raised in Indiana. Never had it. My area is actually more like a Chicago suburb though.
That looks pretty dand good. I've never had it before, but willing to try. From the looks of it, it kinda reminds me of flan wit a crust. I love me some pie! :)
I'm from GA and I've never heard of sugar cream pie and I'm sorry about that. May have to remedy that by making one.
My grandmothers here in Ohio both made Egg Custard tarts and pies, love them . Love sugar cream pie as well.
You guys are just gonna have to learn to speak American and drive on the right side of the road...here.. corn starch and corn flour are not the same...
Mr H.......in the future, don't roll up all the bits of extra pastry dough into a ball to waste it. Instead, lay the pieces on a cookie sheet, brush it was butter and sprinkle the top with cinnamon and sugar and bake in the oven till crispy!!! Double dessert time around the house when you do this!!
That is what we always did growing up. So good.
Tip: always cut two pieces before trying to remove the first piece. Should come out easier.
Everyone in the world who watches your channel is going to love watching Elena grow up. She is a very special child -- you are givingher so many experiences.
Nice video Folks..but as usual..Baby H (🥰) steals a goodly bit of the show!!
Surprisingly custard really isn't a thing here in the US. I kinda want to try it someday out of curiosity but you don't really see it much here to begin with.
I'm not sure I can handle how fast little baby A is growing!! I started watching shortly before the announcement that the family was growing, and she's simply sprouting before our eyes! ❤️
I'm still at five minutes in, but when pre-baking the crust you should use a fork and poke some small holes all around the bottom so it doesn't bubble up, and it bakes evenly.
It looked delicious. You did a great job! You should try making what's called a buttermilk chess pie or make a New York cheesecake my favorite! ❤🇺🇸🙏🏻✌🏻👍🏻
Think of it like a deep dish pizza- cut all the way across like you would cut a pizza, then cut in half the other way, then again and again until you have a pie of all equal pieces the size you want.
Washingtonian here and I never had surgar cream pie. It looks delicious though
In the south we have egg custard pie which sound la like a larger version of your egg custard tart.
despite growing up in IL and visiting IN often, I have never even heard of this! but you can bet I will try it now!
Some rum soaked raisins or brandy-soaked cherries would be good in that.
I thought from the pictures that it was going to come out like a chess pie, which is more of an egg custard. I think I'd like to try this.
Hoosier girl here Love love our pie it so yummy living in Mississippi going home soon can't wait!
Hoosier girl here Love love our pie it so yummy living in Mississippi going home soon can't wait!
Much love from Indiana!! Looks amazing!
it means look at him.... hark at he.......if I know my Bristol
I've heard of it but never tasted one, looks interesting maybe some day
I love watching you kids cooking together. I can't wait to have you be my BBQ sous chefs some day!!!! I promise you can have more than a bit of point H!
We'll bring pie. We cannot wait to get some tips. Little miss will be tucking in big time so she might need her own brisket 😁
😂 I actually know who Cilla Black is. I was watching a true crime story about a killer who appeared on the American version called the dating game. The guy who was reading it was English and went on for 5 minutes about Cilla Black because he thought that was her name but wasn't sure and eventually looked it up. He completely set aside the story because of Cilla 😂
😂
I think the killer’s name was Rodney Alcala.
@bettykemp7122 yes it was. Disgusting, evil man
I'd love to see you make a Chess Pie and/or a Buttermilk Pie.
I think you'd love both Mrs. H
Mr. H with some creative placement of the silver creator award 👍
Never heard of this one 🤔
Don't see custard very often these days either
I am also from Indiana, so glad to see you try our state pie. love your videos.
I've never had or seen this pie on the west coast. Maybe I'll give it a go.
In the US there was The Dating Game. Wow that makes me feel old 😅
4:58 that expression and silence says it all XD patience indeed.
That pie looks really good! I live two states away but have never had it. Have you tried St Louis Missouri Gooey Butter cake? 😊
AAAAHHHH, she's talking real words! She's adorable! I cannot believe how cute Elana is getting! She's a precious flower in these times.
Similar to what we call Chess pie in the Southeast U.S.
Ark at ee means listen to him right? The Dating Game in the 1960's and 1970's was like Blind Date.
i dont make pie crust anymore either. why should i? we can buy rolled pastry shell also, also frozen pie shell (you usually get two in a pack and they are not the shallow ones) or you can buy the prebaked ones (usually a cookie crumb one, which is shallow).. pillsbury makes the rolled one, you get two in the bos, but they are both rolled inside the box..
You're right that the Pillsbury crusts are good and they're easy... and round like the pie plate! I don't understand why the UK would make their frozen pie crusts rectangular?!! 🥧
I've had egg custard pie but never sugar cream pue
The Dating Game was our version of that
I love this channel and the work you guys put into the videos.
Another great video, and a great looking pie. I've said it before, and i'll say it again. You guys rock ! Keep up the great work.
Oh my goodness! Alana is getting so big. 😊
I'm from lower Alabama I am a beach bum pecan pie
I have never had Sugar Cream Pie. It looks good though so I will have to try it some time! My favorite cream pie is Chocolate Cream pie. I have sent you the recipe that matches our family recipe most closely. Would love for you to try it!
Thank you. We'll see what we can do
Sugar cream pie is my favorite pie.
Native Hoosier. Never had this pie.
Honesty is always the best policy, for sure Mrs H 🙏😀
OMGosh, that looks so good! Yum!
You should try our tenderloins!
FYI, "Hoosier" is pronounced HOO-zher. Rhymes with "New fur", and the second syllable is the same as in "measure". No reason you should have known that...
Now we do. Apologies for the mispronounciation, I should have looked it up before. Mrs H 💕
One of the things I love about watching you guys is getting to see Elana growing up.
Just noticed your new kitchen shelves, Mrs. H. Nice!
Thank you.
Delightful, as always!
Thank you for this. As a native Hoosier, my grandmother used to make Sugar Cream Pie and then taught my mom who continued the tradition when Grammy was gone. My sister and her husband and I all moved to South Carolina about 11 years ago and Sugar Cream Pie was sorely missed. Finally, our parents moved do our corner of South Carolina in May of 2022 and that Thanksgiving my mom made Sugar Cream Pie. It was so wonderful to experience such a "tangible" memory. Thank you again!
Ask your mom to teach you how to make it. Then you can hand down the tradition in your family every thanksgiving.
