The Mossberg Shockwave is Mostly Useless

- In this review of the 20 gauge version of Mossberg's shotgun that's not really a shotgun, we take a look at why the very concept of the Shockwave makes it a lousy choice for personal protection.

I’m convinced that this is the most useless gimmick ever made. I just ordered one.

I'm kind of questioning this guy now O.o
@@dylanpaul1212 Henry AR7!!! Great weapon for survival! Even if it's a 22. But I do like the adapters for the break action 12 gauges!!!
Lmao same
Some of your examples given in the video are relevant to using this weapon, however the gun is far from useless. As a retired police officer with the last decade of service as a firearms' instructor, I fell in love with it on first sight. I was in the local gun shop purchasing some ammo when I spotted this on the wall. I could see that for the gun to be accurate it had to be held up and away from the face, as you demonstrated. In practice, firing a gun from the hip is extremely inaccurate unless continuous practice is used. I passed on purchasing it and sometime later was reading about the Crimson side mounted laser sight. I order the Crimson and the next day purchased a shockwave in 20ga (I am 74 and have no business messing with a 12ga "handgun"). I mounted the Crimson and took the shockwave to the range. It worked fantastic. Point and shoot, on target every time. The farthest distance I have to shoot in my house is 25 feet, at that distance the spread is about chest wide with No.3 Buck. It is my go-to gun for defending my house now. One caveat; if someone feels like repeating this, get the green laser if you want to fire the weapon in outside in full sunlight, as the red while perfect inside or on cloudy days will wash out in sunlight. Thanks for your videos, I find them informative and interesting.
Would you mind sharing a link to the specific green crimson laser sight, that you are referring to?
Mossberg offers the shockwave with a saddle mounted laser.
They are a natural match for indoor self defense.@@jimloehndorf3077

And there isn't anything wrong with that. Wish others could just admit that.

Anyway on a serious note.. the only reason I don't have one of these yet is because of the legality with putting a telescoping stock AR pistol grip on it. I have tactical shotguns that have just a pistol grip I don't need another one. But the 500 the 870 or the 590 shockwave with an adjustable AR pistol grip that's something I would like. Small backpack size also an NFA item I believe if you do that to it. But they did approve I say they okay the shit staying ATF they approved one only one shoulder mounted pistol brace for those for now. But you know how they work. You give him a few days a week or months and they'll change their mind. That's the only reason I don't have one yet. I don't like the grip that it comes with and if I can't put a shoulder stock on it I don't want it. It is a badass little piece of hardware though. Pardon my language but nothing says fuck you like a 12 gauge
Like the saddlelaser
Right. Get a Nightstick green laser/light forend. It is so good I removed the optic I had mounted on top. No longer needed.

follow-up comment: i have had it for about 2 months now and it's fucking amazing. well built little bitch. I've only found 2 issues with it. 1. the bars on the pump that retract into it are a bit loose, but apparently that's common with mossbergs. 2. the sides of the undercarriage(idfk) where you insert the shells is SUPER sharp at first. Dude, you are not going to hip fire with any accuracy. Real life is not like Call of Duty.
Not every gun has to be a tool. Nothing wrong with having a gun just to have a good time at the range.
Tyler Hulan absolutely! Thank you!
I do agree somewhat many citizens don't practice enough correctly and thus should not waste time at the range with a gun that really they can't efficiently use 🚫
Michael Williams yeah I agree and some of us have places to shoot and don’t have to rely on going to the range. I own many firearms and shoot all the time, since I live on a good size farm I never go to a range simply because I don’t have too. I can safely shoot up to 300yds on my own property.
I put the Raptor grip to ny 590A1 Mariner and it's alot of fun to shoot the heavy 18.5" barrel really helps with recoil also it looks really cool.
Unfortunately I haven't been able to fire it in a while due to an injury to my elbow from work
Agreed. If you see it as an expensive range toy, that's fine. But some people are pushing it as a defense or hunting gun, which is insane. This has bad effects, like the people who bought a pistol grip only shotgun as their first gun because they saw one on TV, shot it a few times, realized that it sucked, and never bought another gun because they assumed all guns suck.
Yes but if you hold it sideways like "gangster style" it adds +15 accuracy and +10 damage
Master Chief but does it increase the critical hit rate?
Undercover Asian crits all day baby
Danny Souki don’t forget you can upgrade it by gathering resources like scrap metal or wood chips then have a master armored level it up by doing a sub quests
Increased critical hit rate comes with higher luck. Wear your 'naughty negligee' for a quick +2 LK bonus.
Did you buy the 2018 season pass? It's hidden under DLC...
You can add a Crimson Trace laser sight. It is a saddle type laser that will turn this into a deadly accurate self defense weapon.
Good advice. Thanks!
You'd have to be completely inept to not be accurate with this
Until you take more than 50 shots and the CT falls apart😂
Hows it gonna fall apart? Its screwed down.
I put a laser on it solved the aiming issue real easy
Haha, you would think in 2018 that it would seem like a common solution to that problem but even I haven't thought of that or seen anyone else do it. Way to go dude
That was actually my first thought as well. Laser, and problem solved.
I just came to say the same thing
Even a flashlight with a tight beam mounted would work, especially in close quarters. I use one on a full length 88 and checked it with a laser bore site. pretty much dead center at 25 feet.
So basically you need to spend another $150 on a laser to make the gun halfway usable. Awesome product.
I've been effectively shooting from the hip for decades. If he can't shoot from the hip, it's on him, not the weapon's fault.
It will always be worse than a stock shotgun
@@Halal_Dan how can you possibly know this? Different people fit into different weapons differently. What may be perfect for you sucks for someone else. It’s always been like this, long before firearms were ever invented. Shooting from the hip is an entirely different process from traditional shooting with a (modern) pistol. This Mossberg can be used to equal efficiency as any other semi auto shotgun can, *depending on the person doing the shooting*
Keep kicking ass and shooting from the hip, Kimberlain; it’s a skill I’m currently leveling up myself for future quick drawing with my python

I agree that you should invest in a laser.
Well, that joke was obviously off target with some. Went right over their heads!
The shockwave provides more mobility and ergonomics in CQC, also it is worth considering that longer shotguns make it earlier for the opposition to reach the gun faster and misdirect the barrel or disarm you completely. The shotgun clearly is not intended for long-range shooting, so I think you misjudged the weapon. It is a good truck gun, compact for survival/bear protection for hikers or those living in certain areas, and even an affective option in the case of home defense.

The push-pull method is my preferred technique for all shotguns. Even with a stock, I barely make contact with my shoulder and cheek. True that it does require a little strength, but I imagine someone who lacks the strength to do it would lack the strength to wield a 12 gauge anyway.

I think I'd rather have this in my truck instead of a full shotgun... which I think is one of the primary niches of these things, yes we all know not having a stock makes it much less effective. But what you lose in usability, you gain in ease of storage and concealability, and sometimes that's the priority
anotherrandomtexan25 well said.
Loss of effectiveness and poor aiming ability can never be trumped by cocealabily especially when they have had product like folding stocks for decades now
Just put a folding stock on it?
@@ffdd6102 Ability to conceal cannot be overrated. It's hard to fire a shotgun than has been detected and confiscated. Anyone who hasn't shot one of these is talking out of school. If you can shoot, you can be deadly accurate with a Mossberg Shockwave.

Glad I went through comments because that's the first thing I thought of.
Use a pressure switch, but honestly if you're using for strictly home defense and technically can't shoot someone outside of your house, you really don't need a light (would be helpful in the dark). I'd say average shot inside a house isn't more than 20 feet, with a shotgun I'd say using buckshot you'd just have to point in direction and even if off slightly you'd still do significant damage. I've not tested this on a range just a theory based off just shooting guns throughout the years.
To much for some to comprehend I guess.

Just because you can't shoot the gun accurately doesn't mean that other people can't either. With a bit of practice and proper technique, this firearm can be perfectly accurate at the distances you'd be defending yourself at (15 or so yards).
If you really have SO MUCH training with stockless shotguns that you really are crazy effective with them (hint, you aren't that good), then you will STILL be better with a shotgun that has a stock.
I have used stockless shotguns a decent amount, but before the shockwave came out. I honestly tried to give them the benefit of the doubt. The shot timer always indicated that having the stock was better, and by a significant amount.
The shockwave doesn't change it at all, just shortens the barrel by 4 inches and instead adds a grip that is a few inches longer.

@lonkchase A stock is still better in almost every circumstance.

@@TheOwenMajor every circumstance except in tight spaces... which is the whole point of this shotgun..?
@@tacosHELLYEAH Use a handgun. The only tight space I can think of where something of this length would be more manageable than a stocked gun is in a vehicle.
And in a vehicle, you would be much better off using a pistol.
The video and assessment are appreciated.
I've owned the Mossberg for a few months now--I've had it at the range a number of times now, and I'm pretty comfortable with it at this point, both shooting "from the hip" and aiming it from chest/neck height. I think everything you say is valid, but as I've stated elsewhere, having grown up in the venerable city of Detroit, where I've lived in mostly old buildings with small rooms, tight corners, and short hallways (such as the beautiful old building I've been living in for the past 5 years), it's hard not to view the Shockwave as the most practical home defense option for my particular situation (compared to something like the full-size 590)...
Granted, it takes practice with a specific technique to be good and accurate, just like a handgun. I’ve never had a safety issue running the action and that’s after hundreds of rounds. It’s not for long range and precision. Given those limitations it will be a definite fight stopper in small spaces like cars or rooms or hallways. I don’t have any shots past 15 yards I’m my house so it works for me.
A bullpup shotgun would have the same short length (26.1" for KSG, for example), but with the ability to be shouldered, along with vastly superior capacity.
What does that cost?
What do bullpup shotguns cost?
Kel Tec's KSG (bullpup, 15 shell capacity (7+7+1), pump action) 2018 price is $600-$800
IWI's TS12 (bullpup, semi-auto, 16 shell capacity (5+5+5+1), same people who make the tavor) is supposed to be $1300-$1500
Standard Manufacturing's DP-12 (bullpup, double barrel, pump action, 16 shell capacity (7+7+1+1)) is around $1300.
Crye Precision / Vantage Arms Six12 (not released, probably vaporware, bullpup, gas seal revolver with replaceable cylinder magazine, 6 shell capacity, modular system to change configuration, including mounting under an AR) is supposed to be $1800.
So yes, more expensive, but definitely worth the price to get the decisive advantages they offer.
The KSG offers a competitive price, 26.1" length, low weight, and high capacity.
The DP-12 offers a similar design to the KSG, but a couple inches longer, much heavier, better recoil mitigation, and a double-barrel mechanism, meaning you get TWO shots and two pulls of the trigger before having to pump again.
The IWI TS12 offers the ONLY semi-auto bullpup shotgun on the market (save for some cancerous conversion kits that are really terrible). This means you could use the gun one handed, leaving one hand free to open doors, hold a light, hold a phone, grab a child, etc. It also offers great capacity and significantly less recoil than the others, thanks to the recoil mitigation from the semi-auto mechanism.
The Six12 offers the lightest weight bullpup shotgun on the market, coming in at 3 pounds for the base chassis, and 5 pounds for the stand-alone configuration. It offers uncompromising reliability with no ejection issues. It's highly modular and mostly made of titanium. The downsides are a comparatively low capacity of 6 shells (which is on par with most plebeian defensive shotguns) and a long heavy double-action-only trigger. I think the biggest advantage is that while not technically a semi-auto, it offers double-action semi-auto use, meaning that you can use it one handed. Combined with its extremely light weight, I think this makes it very promising for home defense. Also, unlike tube magazines or box magazines, the shells in the cylinder won't squish over time.
Thank you for all of that info. Interesting!

Not useless. It would make a great truck gun.

Bicycle weapon. When riding country roads, wolves/bears/cats are a genuine threat. Joggers could carry in a shoulder sling.
Now the criminals know which truck to break into.

@@DEATH_TO_TYRANTS well, I'd like to try one. Last year I suffered a pretty significant injury to my wrist and he was concerned I wouldn't have the strength to hold a 12GA with it.
Just don't agree that this is useless. It's a bit new to many people. So, you need to get used to it. Once you find out where it shoots and figure out the way(s) you want to hold it, you will be hitting just fine with it. That's the same with any gun. In the meantime, you have a shorter long gun that's easier to maneuver in tight spaces and easier to store. I have the 20 Ga version, and I'm totally satisfied with it. I put on the Talon rubber grip and it looks like it came with the gun.
Yup,, if he was in a situation were his life depended on a gun and this was de only gun he had i bet he would pick it up n use it and sing praises about it afterwards, maybe
Maybe your over thinking this one. Great fun, everyone loves when I break out the shockwave
Many of my military friends carried the 14 inch in Afghanistan. For urban tac, home defense and hallway clearing its a must. Quit worrying about aiming and use it how it was designed, a hip fired boomstick that will clear a room.
With my hat in hand, I have to respectfully disagree with your summation. I've had the same training (maybe not the "exact" course) that "greylocke100" referenced. The properly adjusted sling is the key. That front strap helps too, with this particular gun. I purchased mine specifically for home defense, with the philosophy that pistols put holes IN people. Rifles put holes THROUGH people. Shotguns, with the proper loads, at the proper distances, put flesh and organs on the ground. This "firearm" is premium for home defense, in addition to taking it on errands and trips as a truck gun (I live near a state border). On mine, I installed an OPSol adapter, and I fill it up with Aguila mini shells in the 00 buck flavor, plus extra slugs in the side saddle. My extra ammo, outside of what's on the gun, is a stash of 2 3/4 00 buck. I simply pluck the OPSol adapter out, if need be. For me, installing a "brace" would defeat the maneuverability that such a compact weapon possesses, so that's not an option. To compare the Shockwave to a "combat shotgun" is like comparing a Kel Tec Sub 2000 to a precision distance rifle. It's simply not for that. It's, for lack of a better term, a niche gun. It has a specific application that works well with proper instruction. It just works. But I still enjoy your videos and respect your opinion. Thanks.
I keep hearing about this gun having a "niche application" but I still don't know what that application is. When and where would I realistically want a gun like this instead of a handgun or a stocked shotgun?
Egads, how did I know that he would have it loaded with minishells?
1) Minishells have serious reliability issues. Most shotguns do not feed them reliably, including 500's and 870's. Run 50-100 through and see if you don't have a single problem. Even with the adapter, malfunctions can still happen. The minishell adapter helps, enough for them to be suitable for range fun, but not nearly reliably enough for defensive use. Further, in order to use those 2-3/4" shells on the side, you would have to first remove the adapter.
2) Minishells have disproportionately fewer pellets. This greatly defeats your perceived goal of stopping the threat with the first shot, to quote "Shotguns, with the proper loads, at the proper distances, put flesh and organs on the ground."
3) Minishells usually pattern abysmally poorly, with unreasonably wide and inconsistent spread. Combined with a low pellet count, that makes it so hitting your target with sufficient pellets is even less likely, further decreasing their effectiveness.
4) Minishells almost always yield a notably reduced velocity, meaning that what pellets even hit the target will penetrate to a shallower depth than you would expect from a normal 2-3/4" load.
5) Most defensive shootings with shotguns are ended extremely quickly with normal buckshot 2-3/4" loads, negating the need for more ammo. Using minishells will just elongate the confrontation, as they likely won't stop the threat nearly as quickly. Simply put, stopping the threat with 1-2 shots and having 4-5 spare is much better than stopping the threat with 3-5 shots and having more spare ammo.
6) Minishells do not offer NEARLY enough increased capacity to make up for the loss in reliability, reduced pellet count, horrible pattern, and reduced velocity.
If you are worried about your low capacity, such that you would load minishells, just get a longer tube, preferably with a stock, like a normal 500 would have. That small increase in length is more than worth the increased capacity, increased effectiveness, increased shootability, decreased recoil, and ability to shoulder the gun.
If you want a shorter length but also higher capacity, your only option is to go with any of the bullpup options.
With a DP-12, KSG, or TS-12, you get that short length, massively increased capacity (16, 15, and 16, respectively, all of 2-3/4" shells), and most importantly, you keep the ability to shoulder the gun. That ability to be shouldered gives you vastly superior ability to manage recoil, faster aiming, more accurate shooting (hitting the target EVERY TIME is most important, after all), easier reloading, easier clearing of malfunctions, the ability to use sights and optics, and much more. Now you pay handsomely for those advantages, but that extra money is more than worth it to save your life.
Or, you know, you could just get a normal 500 or 870 that has a stock.
I have had really good luck with the mini shells, in a Mossberg. I wouldn't depend on them in any other pump shotgun though. The OPSol adapter made them dependable in regards to cycling. Insofar as the rest of your post, and I do appreciate your thoughts, I can just say they work for me. Thanks for your reply. Take care.
I encourage you to watch more of his videos before making the determination to never watch again. You might have come here just because you are a fan of the Shockwave, but he has so much more to offer. He is a very well respected individual and he provides some great information.
The focus of his content is always on civilian self defense. Military applications, like door breaching or tank driving, are so outside the realm of civilian life that they aren't considered relevant. If you currently are active military and want tips that are tuned specifically for military applications, try "Garand Thumb", who has videos very similar to this, but with a much more military personnel focus.
As a civilian, stockless shotguns are extremely limited in application. For most civilian uses, they are directly inferior to stocked shotguns.
That is the basis of his presentation, and it is a logical and honest look at stockless shotguns from that perspective.

It would probably be more accurate to say the Mossberg Shockwave is "mostly useless for the Lucky Gunner guy." As with all guns, not every gun will suit every person. Lucky Gunner's level of training and personal requirements don't match up with the Shockwave, but that's not to say nobody will find it useful or unworkable. Your mileage may vary, as always.
I normally enjoy your channel, but this video I strongly disagree with
Completely and whole heartedly disagree.
It’s a badass firearm
This will work with full size shells, but, as some others may have stated, the opsol adapter and Aguila mini shells make this a lot easier to control and use.
Mossberg recently released the 590S version that natively works with the mini shells.
Wrong... it's a perfect backpack bear gun. It's a perfect truck gun.
Far from being perfect. Shotgun without stock < Shotgun with stock. or if you want something smaller in size. .44 magnum revolver or 10mm pistol works better because at least you can aim it.
240pixel i think this gun actually aims better and youll have a better chance at delivering a kill shot with double aught buckshot than a heavy recoiling revolver
@@MrInzombia aims better? 12 gauge in such a small package has a lot of recoil and unlike handgun you can't extend it. I tend to disagree with the assertion of the shockwave being mostly useless. The most common Glock G-19 holds 15+1 rounds of ammo. I keep my 12 ga shockwave loaded with one 15 pellet 3" 00 buckshot in the chamber followed by five 9 pellet 2-3/4" 00 buckshot. You're talking a payload of 60 pellets similar diameter to the 9mm vs 16 rounds from the G-19. I can just about match the entire capacity of the G19 with my first pull of the trigger using a 3" 00 buckshot shell. Practice makes perfect, aiming and upper body strength is a huge plus. I will admit the Shockwave isn't a beginner gun nor easily handled by folks with small hands.
For real. This thing is literally the punch of a 12 or 20 gauge with the maneuvering of a pistol almost it's awesome
Not to mention those Aguila mini shells
@@codywhittenton6144 If you can't handle recoil from a 12 ga, get a 20 ga, but mini-shells reduce reliability when compared to ammo the weapon was designed for.
Lol the main reason for mini shot shells is increased capacity not reduced recoil. Come on nube lol
I mounted the Nightstick laser/light combo forend and can now shot it accurately, 8+1 rds of minishell buckshot in a compact little package much more maneuverable in my home than any other long arm. Crimson Trace makes a laser 'saddle' mount that's nice too (I have no affiliation with either).
I like spending time in the north west region of the US and i think that this type of firearm would be great for camping. I use small cars to save gas and the compact design would fit perfectly in not taking up space and being lighter than a normal shotgun. Keeping one in the tent could help with unwanted creatures.
I got one of these as a gift and after practicing with stationary targets then moving to skeets I will say this is my go to camping and woods shotgun.

Tommy TwoGun chest high
I used more or less the same technique in this video that Clint Smith demonstrated in his. I got fairly good results shooting the gun this way, but still significantly slower and with less consistency than a conventional shotgun. For 99% of gun owners, it's a poor choice for self-defense compared to a handgun or a real shotgun.
For self defense perhaps, but the fun factor is still there.

I have only owned my shock n saw for a week, but I will say that for having very little experience with this firearm, it does not pose many issues for me as far as accuracy goes. The shock n saw, of course, has the chainsaw grip attachment, and I have found it very useful for recoil and firing from the hip. The possibilities are nearly endless with how this may be used in a home to defend a family. The grip allows it to be shot in strange angles, without even exposing your body to a door way. I can fire it upside down even, easily. And I understand that blind fire is not the safest in regards to home defense, but the point I am trying to get across is that if you are aware of your surroundings, you can very easily manipulate angles, and navigate doorways and hallways that just would not be possible with a full length stocked shotgun. I carry this in my car sheathed everywhere I go. I can't bring it into a store concealed like a handgun, but if something breaks loose, I have a 12 gauge firearm that I can simply pull out and have with me, even as a second option. Its easily one of the easiest 12 gauges I have ever shot, and the recoil is very minimal, even for a 12 gauge! Its also extremely light, and can easily be shot one handed. I understand that not all of the examples I brought up have been practical or are common among shotgun practices. But thats the whole point! There are so many ways this can be utilized for up close personal protection. That makes this gun unique. But just because it is not full sized with a stock does not mean it is unless or even mostly useless. There are many uses for this shotgun
