I tried it on mine. It does it only with the Versastack adapter, because it doesn't stay latched in the back. The normal boxes don't unlatch like that, keeping it attached
As seasoned pro, I’ve been using my tradestack for the past 3 months and coming from the ridged I’ll say this is a huge upgrade and these are so easy too use and very strong! Great boxes and no complaints here
I switched from the Ridgid system too and happy with it. The tool tote/bag for this craftsman system is what made me switch plus the fact they have a tool box with drawers
Carpenter/finisher here, I pack the back of my truck with this system and it fits the back of my cab perfectly, with storage on the seats as well. As long as you don’t wrench on your sh*t, bar the tools you use every day like an impact, I don’t see this system being an issue especially considering the low price. Picked up my full system that packs my back seat less than $200 and it fits everything but the bigger jobsite tools that go in the bed anyways. If you don’t have a Milwaukee/DeWalt budget I’d give this a go. 👍🏽 Only con I’d say is the plastic clips versus a cleat or even latch system, if it’s your main storage and you run a crew off of it I’d say the better stuff is worth the money. If you’re just one guy like me, more than good enough.
I also grew up with Sears and Craftsman. Now at 72 I've got Craftsman tools from my grandfather, my father and from my own 50 years of tool gathering. I'm just a home handyman and DIYer, but the older stuff still rocks. 25 years ago my son and I were repairing a garden gate when a Craftsman ratchet let go inside. Took it right down to the local store (recently closed) and they handed me a replacement that I've been using ever since. My son was duly impressed. I'm still running the Craftsman 19.2v drill, inpact, small circ saw and a right-angle driver my son bought and used once. Don't want to say this too loud where the wife might hear, but I probably have every tool I'll ever need from here on out. So, in a way I'm glad (and sad) that I won't have to consider any of the new Craftsman stuff.
I have had my share of Craftsman tools, stationary power tools, hand held power tools, A whole box full of USA made hand tools ect. I think people misremember the quality of these tools. Craftsman has never been a great tool brand, they were handy because of the warranty and there was always a Sears close by.

@@christophercrawford2736 I have the Versastack. It's not bad and so far I haven't had any problems with it but when it first came out they were making all sorts of boxes and bags for it and they just stopped all of a sudden. Now I see why. That's the only thing about packout that appeals to me is that it's so versatile but the price is still too big a pill for me to swallow.
It’s a decent set, but with so many others out there I’d pass at this price point. The tough system 2.0 and pack out regularly hit close to this price.
Om betting you lost the spring for that red part like Vince noticed on VCGConstruction video a few days ago. Liked it right up to the same point. The versa stack adaptor isn't designed properly apparently
Nope, our spring was still in the part. Also I just watched Vince's vid on this and it looks like he had the same issue. Also, lol, you can see the spring on the ground right behind him.
You were pulling the VersaStack adapter plate off wrong, you are not supposed to lift it up by the VersaStack plate it tells you not to. You were supposed to push the red button to release the VersaStack adapter plate. I just uploaded my full length testing of this toolbox tower, and we had the similar failure mode on the drop test where on the small toolbox one of the front clasps popped off but it snaps right back into place after the drop test.
I wasn't lifting it at all, I put horizontal pressure on it and not that much. I only lifted it a bit to show that it was no longer engaged. If you have any amount of weight above the adapter plate and it hits a bump or gets whacked from the backside it will detach just like I showed. If all you are doing is moving stuff on a nice flat floor you won't see any issue with this thing. But if you have it attached when in your truck or across a rough job site it will detach. I think the red part releasing so easily is probably a design feature to keep it from actually breaking but it's too easy and that spring could be easily lost.
@@denoftools I will play with that some more on our end and see if we encounter the same issue. Now during the drop test of nine feet the small tool blocks clasp locks the lid down popped off but nothing sheared or broke it just snaps right back on. I also agree with you that possibly that was a design feature that keeps it from just breaking and shearing off just like batteries often pop off the tool when they're dropped instead of taking the brunt of the force and shattering
Love my Ridgid system and the Hart system is not bad for the cheap price either. I have yet to find anything Craftsman that is quality equipment at the level their prices are. Craftsman is upper level DYI level stuff but often priced at high prosumer levels without a sale.
All of the stacking pack out box systems seem like more of a pain in the rear than what they are worth to me. Taking the top boxes off to get something out of the bottom seems like a lot of extra work
I have had this for a few months, got it on sale for $119, however I had that latch fail on mine too. It was on the bottom large box. I was able to re-attach it and continue using it. I do have to be careful with it or it pops off again.
The Husky stuff they have out now at HD is actually pretty good. I thought the connector latches might be crap, but they are holding up surprisingly well. Nicely priced too.
I use TSTAK for the drawer units and Ridgid. The Ridgid is no doubt the best built for the money, but I wish they had more options available, however being owned by TTI, I doubt they will do so as it might impact Packout sales.
I found an issue right away at the store with the dewalt 2.0 half stacks that go on top. The half stacks don’t stay on very well. The locking latches are warped and don’t stay latched. Since then I think they pulled them off the shelf..
i went to Lows here in Portland Or. and checked it out. the same thing happened. the store associate. he had to find it, and bring it down from the over head also. -he was real helpfull and nice. once i looked at it. i loved the boxes and connection system. i then also attached the adapter to just the medium size box. lifted it by the adapter many times and it kept disconnecting from the box. the box was empty. that is going to be a big problem for the system. i can only imagine if the box had anything in it, or i put a Versastack box onto it. i hope they fix the adapter, or come out with some Versastack type attachments then i probably will get one. right now i have to give it a hard pass.
I have the same problem with mine. In the end i just need it to hold it in place while I move it around. I won't be messing with it much as I move it around.
versa stack and trade stack are on sale now at Lowe’s, which one would you get if you already had the craftsman jobsite radio and we’re only going to use the toolboxes for storage in the basement?
I am biased (I have a couple of the Ridgid stacks) but I definitely agree. They might not be as automatic/fast to latch together as Packout or ToughSystem 2.0, but once latched, those thick wire latches are not likely to go anywhere, nor easily break. I did have one bum connector on one of my clear-top parts organizers, where it had a broken-off surface. It was the small, plastic, springy tab in the part of the latch structure where one end of the thick latch wire is inserted. But after examining my numerous other boxes, I feel that was an isolated problem. I had just bought it, then discovered the issue, so HD just swapped it out for another one, no problem. Might have been defective straight from the factory, or abused somehow before I bought it.
In Europe, Fein and festool come with locking "systainer" boxes...loved them. I use the Stanley fat max locking boxes (no longer made" and the craftsman versa stack ( identical to Stanley) to store tools and accessories...so my Bosch router with collets and baseplates and a few common bits are all together for example. Milwaukee is absurdly expensive and the tools no longer come with any kind of case. I love milwaukee m18...but keep them in craftsman boxes.
Ya know... it's not the most versatile out there, but I'm very happy with the Rigid line. You can just tell the plastic they used is superior to the one in the video, just by the way it sounds. What sold me on the Rigid line, was the stacking, locking milk crates for only $20 each. I would love to have a whole wall shelf system with those.
@@denoftools I know, I really like the Packout System... but I just can't do red in my shop. The Ridgid boxes, have a little swatch of orange, which, of course I painted over as Eco Mouse Green ;-) and the Orange & Green go together anyway, since I'm Irish... it just works! But why aren't more companies doing an interlocking milk crate? It's so useful for the big bulky items you need to just throw into a box to get going. Like extension cords, or miscellaneous building supplies for the project at hand.
Other than the cord wrap on the handle, I wish that you would have tested that more like pulling back on it and maybe twisting it. Amazons complaints seem to focus in on the handle as been the stacks nemesis and reason for returns/refunds. Can you or anybody comment specific to the handle holding up through your testing process or actual work place use? Is it all plastic or metal mix? Does it collapse and extend? That is the main support system for the entire stack, if the handle fails the whole system fails. Any comments?
Thanks for the video. The fact that it broke that easily ruins it for me. Definitely was going to combine with tstak drawers. Now I'll just wait to see if they fix the issues.
Looks like a clone of the Ridgid, but with a different connection system. But it’s more expensive and that adapter plate issue is huge. The fact that the latch popped off indicates it’s not just an issue with the adapted plate.
I saw them at my local big box and it has the same problem. I wasn't looking to buy some because I have my Milwaukee packout but I like seeing other stuff and being open minded but these won't end up on my trucks. The men won't like them.
Hey Red. Great update on this new mid level tool system. I don't think it is stout enough for my needs, but would love to get your take on the DeWalt Tough System 2.0. I haven't seen a review (or V1.0) on your channel. I can't go all in for the Packout system, as I already have some DW TS boxes. In particular, I want your opinion on the separate cart/ dolly which allows individual loading/ unloading of boxes and is rated for 200-ish pounds.
Buy once, cry once. I had a Husky rolling system for a while and finally bought a packout system. Should have used the $150 I’ve spent on the husky on the packout. Night and day difference!
Dewalt Tough 1.0 is fine. They charge $100 for 3 boxes on sale, vs packout which wants I think $300 msrp (never seen it on sale tbh, but can't imagine a 50% discount, much less a 67% discount! )
@@woodworkerroyer8497 PackOut is like $287 I think. There has been a couple sales on it. I think one was around $180 and there was a one day glitch where it was $109.
I was looking for a second system to go with my VersaTStak system. If this system was compatible with TS/TS2.0 I would have seriously considered it just for its size. I've always felt like Milwaukee is overpriced but it's got way more options than most systems out there. It may come down to just getting a second VS system.
Get this trade stack it’s really good, it’s held up really well, there’s a new drawer box coming out and it’s a bit over priced but it’ll go down at some point
Great review! I had the same synopsis and I got absolutely DRAGGED by viewers! LOL. I can't recommend it either, especially at the $169 HOLIDAY price it was at when I reviewed it. Toughsystem 2.0 at the time was a much better deal at $149 on sale.
I got it just how it is removed one of my trucks backseats and put the stack there to haul all my tools and materials. It was a good price and feels like a solid system the easy release sold me on it, but i kinda wish i wasnt such a cheap ass and just bought dewalt or Milwaukee just because there’s more options was kinda expecting them to have more options coming for the trade stack system but so far just the same tower
I know this may sound weird... But hear me out... That adapter plate looks like it can adapt Tstak to versastak......... As in you can redundantly clip it in between
This is a very good deal for 149$. I bought dewalt toughsystem 2.0 mobile box with ts 1.0 bundle of medium and organizer box. Then I went to Lowe’s and saw tradestack. Listen to this please, plastic is much better quality on craftsman tradestack, dewalt feels really cheap. The latching system on toughsystem 1.0 is a total disaster, there’s no room to grab the side latches , you can only do it with tips of your fingers, and it’s hard. Latching system on 2.0 is good but doesn’t look like it will survive long on my jobsites . I spent close to 200$ on dewalt system and it’s too late for me to return it, if I saw the tradestack earlier, I would get it right away. If you are on a budget, go with craftsman tradestack or Ridgid pro (my friend has it, heavy duty, durable and well made), if you have money to spend, go for milwaukee packout. Dewalt is just not good, I already listed it on Craigslist hoping to get at least some money back. Good luck!
As a field service technician I would not buy a hard plastic thing like this. I detest my Husky rolling tote bag because anything I want is always at the bottom of it. But it is vastly more rugged and useful than this type of system. I can throw parts on top of the Husky and only have to roll in one thing.
If bought it bc I do have a 6yrs old tstack system, the wheeled box is wrecked but I still have the other boxes anyways I had to take it back to the store, the plastic handler on top broke right at the plastic pins. To me is just anther junk from Stanley Black & Decker
Question. Why did you do that show at the end with a Dewalt box and not a Craftsman box on top. I’m just a little confused on that. Oh wait, you were showing us NOT to put a Dewalt box on top. Got it now. My Tradestack just has craftsman boxes on it. Really appreciate you showing that. I was thinking the other day, why don’t I stack a totally different manufacturer box on my tradestack. Thank god I saw your video.
Gotta be honest, not really too impressed with this set. If I wasn’t into Packout, I’d probably get the Ridgid set, would be great if they worked with Keter to release more items for the Ridgid system though.
Please explain to the people why you don’t like this system, I came off of the ridged because it is nowhere near the quality of this craftsman system. Please elaborate on your details?
Just bought this system today and out of ridged 2.0, dewalt 2.0 this one is the best priced. I’m able to use the T stak/ versastack. Hands down it is the easiest to remove the cases. It’s a good overall system. I know I can’t beat the Milwaukee but the Milwaukee is way overpriced in my opinion. In note I did go through a few craftsman rolling carts and I did experience what happened to you but 2 out of 5 worked so I got the best one. I will say your videos are helpful in your input because if I never new this. I would have said this is a horrible system And so forth. Overall bear I’m having a good experience with this and hopefully it will last me a long long time. Btw I did not want to buy this but using the other systems I hated a few features on them.
At $199 for the last two Black Friday's at Home Cheapo for the Milwaukee PACKOUT stack, if one could wait until the next BF event, and spend the extra $50 to get the far superior PACKOUT instead of buying this Crapsman stuff, you wouldn't be sorry. If they have the same deal this coming November, I will probably pick up another PACKOUT stack.
Vince dropped one off a roof and drove his pickup over it as a test. That adapter can &$@/ off but the rest of it looks better than I expected out of modern Crapsman.
Good logic there. Wish more people would come at this with an analytical mindset. That said I actually found out about this issue in the shop. Just took it outside for the better lighting and hot sun test.
I would think most professionals understand the price range difference? just like with any tool you get what you pay for? I've used mine for almost 3 months no problems but then again I'm not aggressive with my tools. The difference between residential and commercial sometimes dictates how much money you spend on your tools. Like I said I've used mine and I'm happy with it. No problems. It's exactly what you get for that price.the adapter is just an additional piece you don't necessarily have to use it if you don't want to.
I tried it on mine. It does it only with the Versastack adapter, because it doesn't stay latched in the back. The normal boxes don't unlatch like that, keeping it attached

It wouldn't take much to make those Ridgid boxes a top tier option but I think that TTI is holding it back so it won't compete too hard with packout.
Thanks.
You'll have to hook the adaptor first then install the versa stack box
Hopefully they fix that.
Now I'll just wait to see if they fix the issues.
saw the drawer systems for this at lowe's... none of them seemed like the drawers pull good, one broke on each of the ones in the store
Thank you and I appreciate your review, good call!
I tried to do that to mine I didnt have that issue I love this thing
What is the weight limit of it?
The best portable tool box on the market. All the room you need without using the adaptor for the crappy Dewalt and the cheaper versa stack craftsman
This craftsman is the tough system 2.0 with a different locking mechanism.
I haven't tried them yet but I have looked at them at a few trade shows and they look fantastic.
Packout is so far above and beyond everything else IMO. Yes, it's "expensive" but catch it on sale or on the secondary market.
Buy once, cry once. I had a Husky rolling system for a while and finally bought a packout system. Should have used the $150 I’ve spent on the husky on the packout. Night and day difference!
My tough system has been great.
Packout isn't better, this is easier to put together and take off, the Packout can be a pain in the ass to take apart, plus it's not feminent looking
Crate tower one is on sale for 100 bucks. Love it
No wonder I haven't been able to find any versa stack stuff this year...
these are on sale for 79$ at Lowe's right now
Im all in with packout at this point but For my not very important shit Ridged has a okay system i get lots of use out of the crates
Does the handle go down all the way? Or was that as low as it goes?
I know this may sound weird... But hear me out... That adapter plate looks like it can adapt Tstak to versastak......... As in you can redundantly clip it in between
Tstak and versastak are the same essentially the same system. No adapter needed. You can see my combo tower in the 1:45
This is a very good deal for 149$.
Definitely a defect. Liked my old one but was definitely not going to hold up long on the job site though.
If bought it bc I do have a 6yrs old tstack system, the wheeled box is wrecked but I still have the other boxes anyways I had to take it back to the store, the plastic handler on top broke right at the plastic pins. To me is just anther junk from Stanley Black & Decker
Can you lock it ?
They’re made by the same manufacturer, just different brands. I believe Black & Decker owns both now. They’re meant to be interchangeable.
the husky rolling stack is even better.
Hmmm well I love it so far
Yes but if you only stick with tradestack you liked it? I need a hood one for a good price can you recommend any?
I do like it... on it's own.
Wonderful
I was curious why you were asking if it was hot. Then again where I'm at its 40°
Gotta be honest, not really too impressed with this set. If I wasn’t into Packout, I’d probably get the Ridgid set, would be great if they worked with Keter to release more items for the Ridgid system though.
They don’t want to take the wind out of Milwaukee Payout’s sails
Please explain to the people why you don’t like this system, I came off of the ridged because it is nowhere near the quality of this craftsman system. Please elaborate on your details?
I went to lowes I saw one without the red lock thing & I ask the guys that works there he couldn’t fix it , so I just when with rigid
I feel like for $150 you can get a different box with with more space...
What's the best system out there like this? I have the older Husky and need to upgrade
Best is very subjective. Best build quality? Packout. Bang for the buck? I'd say Versastack/Tstak
Stuff breaks when you try to break it.
My versastack and tradestack systems continue to perform as advertised in 6 months of daily use.
Ryobi seriously needs to come out with one of these
Ryobi has a stackable toolbox system (with drawers) released in Australia right now. I hope it makes its way to America! 🇺🇸
I just got one. It probably released after your post. It's pretty good.
Limited lifetime warranty
Made in USA
Take my money!!! I must have it!!
Mine lasted less than a year. Both latches fell off and the handle split off from the box.
I am thinking about getting into a system but I don't know which one yet.
Hop over to home depot and play with ridgids stackable. I've 3 sets and it's great, esp for the price
nice sandals lol where did you pick those bad boys up?
When handle is collapse doesn't fit under my truck bed cover
Where is the Trade Stack made?
At $199 for the last two Black Friday's at Home Cheapo for the Milwaukee PACKOUT stack, if one could wait until the next BF event, and spend the extra $50 to get the far superior PACKOUT instead of buying this Crapsman stuff, you wouldn't be sorry. If they have the same deal this coming November, I will probably pick up another PACKOUT stack.
I wonder why they want 189 for where I'm at, and 149 where you're at?
Vince dropped one off a roof and drove his pickup over it as a test. That adapter can &$@/ off but the rest of it looks better than I expected out of modern Crapsman.
Is it because you used a dewalt box instead of craftsman.
My guess is they are discontinuing versastack. I can’t find any anywhere in the Washington DC metro area.
My lowes here in Knoxville has all sizes of the versastack add-ons but not the base set
Got tons in my store, totes and bins, and dividers and drawers. No 3 set combos though.
Yes I was referring to the base set. But around here there is almost none of the other components either. I’ll bet versastack is going by-bye.
I have an idea. The plastic sitting in the hot sun kind of made it loose. Which should’ve been I’ve had a plastic probably.
Good logic there. Wish more people would come at this with an analytical mindset. That said I actually found out about this issue in the shop. Just took it outside for the better lighting and hot sun test.
Same problem on mine
This Craftsman stacking box vs Milwaukee stacking packout box
I would think most professionals understand the price range difference? just like with any tool you get what you pay for? I've used mine for almost 3 months no problems but then again I'm not aggressive with my tools. The difference between residential and commercial sometimes dictates how much money you spend on your tools. Like I said I've used mine and I'm happy with it. No problems. It's exactly what you get for that price.the adapter is just an additional piece you don't necessarily have to use it if you don't want to.
