    When I bought a N64, my mother told me, that the SNES looks better. At first I was like: "this isn't true", but when I grew older I understood that the SNES has clean pixel graphics, an unbeatable 2D style!

    • @RetroComparisons
      @RetroComparisons  Год назад +113

      I think that 3D graphics were so mind blowing at the time that the novelty really clouded our collective judgment. Looking back now as a whole the 5th generation probably aged the worst out of any generation while the 16 bit era aged like a fine wine.

      @@RetroComparisons It only is the case of N64. I think N64 is too problematic with video cables. If you use RGB SCART ( like Packapunch UK ) on PS1 it has very nice clear image. Newer ones (GC,PS2,WII,XboxOG) used component cables: 5x wires which are awesome. PC users of 1995-1999 early 3D games had things way better and much more power.

    • @RetroComparisons

      @@pekkahollola7646 The PS1 cleans up really good with its video image. I use RGB Scart cables for it whereas with the N64 I have the UltraHDMI mod and even though it gives the best possible signal it's still a blurry mess for a majority of games. PC users did get much better 3D stuff at the time with the clean image of something akin to the Dreamcast.

    • @pekkahollola7646

      Yes this. Difference in PCs vs. Consoles are the proprietary video output cables. In 1990-2000s "retro PCs" there is only common VGA-port cable. But in consoles authentic and original (=meaning best quality) video cables get rare and expensive pretty fast. I had to order some rarer cables from Japan. In Europe 90% of people don't hold on to older cables when new generation comes cables and equipment are trashed. Same said to consoles' proprietary power supply PSU units.

      Well, when you compare 3D games like StarFox, or FPS like Perfect Dark, or 2D games like Yoshi's Story, or racing games like Mario Kart, N64 is always better.
      Only if you compare different kinds of games, a 2D game vs a 3D game, perhaps 2D games look nicer, but you are not comparing the same type of game.

    there was something magical about older consoles. Developers would get very good at exploring the full potential and sometimes it would take years. @@ricardotakahasi8165 I assumed you meant generations since Xbox One and S are in the same gen. Phones are a bit more like PC gaming in that they're aren't seperated by multi-year lifecycles but also devs don't want to drain the batteries out too much by pushing them. Otherwise tho I generally agree with you that some of the magic is lost in modern games but personally I think that's down to rising costs and perhaps for most people, the PS3 era was the last surprise in terms of technology jump from its previous gen. Apart from Nintendo, I suppose consoles have become a bit closer to PC gaming with its mid gen upgrades

    A really brief period in time when a system fully capable of impressive 3D graphics still had developers focused on 2D. I like to see when they combine both, like Castlevania. There is a massive library of Sega mega drive games on the xbox one. The fact that a system with half the bits (32x is 32bit, the 68000 is 16/32-bit instructions) is even competing is a testament to how well the mega drive creators did. See the logical issue here. These games look just like the mega drive versions or a little better. There was also the mega cd and PS1 versions of mickey mania. The mega CD version is better than the SNES version in almost every way. The mega CD version is close but worse than the PS1 version. PS1 version has better colours and some backgrounds look better. Other than that the mega CD and the PS1 versions are mostly the same game. The SNES version has less content, worse music and sound. Does the picture of the SNES now look as good? There were console out at the time that had better hardware than both the SNES and base mega drive. The 3DO 1993-1997 is an example. SNES 1990-2005. Mega Drive 1988-1997 (Sega)/1998-1999 (Majesco) The 3DO is getting a fan made version of Mortal Kombat, this is still in development and is near acrade perfect for graphics and sound. The Neo Geo's (AES) (April 26, 1990-April 22, 2004 first run) graphics and sound were largely superior to other contemporary home consoles, computers (such as the Sharp X68000) and even some arcade systems. This system was not as powerful as the 3DO.
      Ports are normally close to their originals but can have remastered graphics wise or have some added content. Mickey Mania on the PS 1 is remastered from the mega cd version and not the SNES version. The idea of a port is to be faithful to the original. So yes both the original and port should be close. Does this say anything about the older and newer hardware. Well it wont. PS1 was about 3D processing and the SNES 2D processing. PS 1 is a far better console hardware wise but if they redesigned the game, then it wouldnt be a port. It would be a different game.
      The difference can be seen in arcade ports. Here the developer is using the arcade as the original. Mortal Kombat 1, 2 and 3 are far better on later hardware.

    I came here to say the exact same thing "Blackened HEart" and "8BitSnkBoy" did -- I'm a bit shocked by the amount of overlap! I expected this to be a five-minute video when I saw the title, not a solid hour. Then again, the 90s were such a crazy time for video gaming in terms of the speed of how fast the technology was improving. It made the life cycles for consoles as "top of the line" shockingly brief, with huge generational leaps in graphics happening ever 4 years or so that make the generation gaps today look meaningless by comparison. However, a user base is a user base, so often older consoles -- especially SNES, Genesis, and Game Boy -- got well-supported for years past what "last-gen" consoles typically do today. The time period of nearly 2 years between the launches of the Playstation and the N64 meant that the SNES, in particular, got Nintendo's full backing for a lot longer than most people remember as Nintendo continued to back an aging but still-impressive horse... because it was the best horse they had!
    Anyway, I'm not going to get into individual comparisons here, but I do have to give SNES developers kudos for doing some very impressive work. The fact that they could make games like "Street Fighter Alpha 2" and "Doom" work on SNES at all are a real testament to their skill with the hardware. There were clearly things PS1 could do that SNES could never attempt -- advanced polygonal games, especially -- but SNES fares so much better than Genesis would have on most of these comparisons that it does show the SNES hardware had some real hidden potential it only tapped into in its final years. Awesome achievement as a comparison video on your part!

      I was just as shocked as you with how many crossovers there were. As I was putting together the list for this I'd check out the Giantbomb page and think "oh my god, another one that is on the PS1!". As crazy as the 70s and 80s were with technology advances in the industry the 90s were a whole different level. While the TG-16 & Genesis were out in 1990 the NES was still the most commercially relevant and before the decade ended Shenmue was out so I guess in a way it's not too surprising with the volume of games on different generations but it's still interesting nonetheless. Street Fighter Alpha 2 & Doom are minor miracles that they ran on a 16 bit system with SFA2 in particular running quite well. After 5 years of doing this it still fascinates me to see what these consoles could handle especially when seeing stuff from their later years. Thanks as always my friend for your support! It truly means a lot to me.

    The SNES, my childhood console is my favorite Nintendo console (Although the Switch is coming pretty damn close). The fact that it could match up with some of the earlier titles in the PS1 library speaks to how impressive it is. Of course there were some games that the SNES had no business having (Doom and Street Fighter Alpha 2 for example) but the others were either at par or spot on. I didn't know there that many games back then considering that a good half of those on the list never left Japan. This definitely speaks for the immense potential the Super Nintendo truly had.

      The Genesis was my childhood console and I still love it to this day and even as a Sega kid I think the SNES is just as good if not better in some regards. Either way both of those consoles stand the test of time. Having Doom and Street Fighter Alpha 2 on the SNES is a pretty amazing feat even if they're not the best way to play the games. Those both seem like something you'd see come out this decade from the homebrew scene.

    There's a lot more titles on both systems than I would have thought. Amazing work putting this all together, Bill. There's a fair few I knew were on both (mainly the Capcom and Midway games and a few others), but there's plenty I don't recognize. If we are giving a winner, it's probably definitely the PSX, but some games fair better than others in terms of how much better they are on Sony's machine. Norse by Norsewest/Lost Vikings 2 is spiffied up on the PS1 (and Saturn and PC); the fighting games and Captain Commando have nicer sprites, details, and animation; T&E Soft's Pebble Beach and Augusta games and also PGA Tour '96 as well as the Madden games benefit a lot from the PSX's horsepower; the 90s arcade game ports are closer; DooM is a lot more performant and better looking (though the SNES port is quite impressive); etc. But then you have International Superstar Soccer Deluxe and some others that basically got the "SEGA CD" treatment of a slight upgrade with some extra audio and CD-Audio music.

    • @RetroComparisons
      @RetroComparisons  Год назад +1

      Thanks for watching my friend and for always support me on here! I thought that the SNES held its own pretty well though a lot of that may have to do with that Sega CD treatment you mentioned which is a term I may need to borrow going forward. It's always interesting to see what would get only a CD audio upgrade or what would get a total overhaul. I guess this could be said about any gen of consoles but the PS1 in particular is pretty fascinating to me in that it offered games that were on the same level as the SNES/Genesis, had it's own thing going on putting up a great fight against the Saturn/N64, and was also able to hold its own against the Dreamcast as I've been finding out more and more while doing the current season. There's going to be a ton of duplicates but I'm thinking of putting out the same video comparing the Genesis to the PS1 since I probably already have probably over 90% of the footage that I need and can get that knocked out pretty quick.

The 16 bit JRPG style I like better than the 3D style JRPG that came about after the SNES and when a game was ported to the PS1 I was happy when little changed.

      I get the feeling that probably was the case for a lot of these where they started out as 16 bit games that got a 1 to 1 port to the PS1. There are some that got complete overhauls like The Lost Vikings 2 but more often than not a lot of these are similar outside of the CD quality soundtracks. Anywho, thanks for checking this out!

    This might sound crazy, but I've always thought that the PS1 was like a slightly more advanced CD-ROM based Super Nintendo with just more memory that which could pump out cutscenes and a bit more 3D effects. It's kind of why a lot of these games look almost the same on both systems. PS1 is what the Super Nintendo would have been like if it were CD-ROM based.

      @@RetroComparisons A funny thing I'm reading about the Casper games is that the SNES version was developed by Absolute (the company that made A Boy and His Blob) and published by Natsume, but the SFC version was developed by Natsume and published by KSS. Kind of strange.
      The Gameboy version seems to be yet another game, published by Natsume and developed by Bonsai. Adding to the strangeness, the Gameboy Color version is a port of the 3do/Saturn/PSX version, rather than any of the versions previously on any Nintendo systems.
      The common info, like on Wikipedia, describes it as 2 games of the same name, but it looks more like 4 distinct games to me.
      I can't find any exact dates, but I'm guessing Universal started shopping around for contracts and signed off on the SNES, SFC and Gameboy versions before the 3do/Saturn/PSX/GBC version and that they ultimately felt the latter was going to be the better money maker.
      Probably only see this kind of thing with licensed movie tie-in games, since they're treated more like time sensitive merchandise, which is reflected in the splash screens, where it says MCA Universal Merchandising Inc.
      I can't believe I read/wrote that much about Casper video games.

    O projeto do snes é de 1988, o playstation 1 um projeto de 1992/1993. Tirando a diferença de avanço de hardware, as limitações do SNES e do PS1, o Snes não faz nada feio em relação ao PS1 no 2D.
