Next time try sheet metal scraps between the sheetrock and original tin vent holes and use self-tapping screws through the register holes, basically in the exact same place as before. A drill driver should drive the self-tap screws right into the sheet metal scraps.
I went this route - initially bent a piece of sheet metal to a 90 degree flange and screwed it to the original tin for stability. Realized that was overkill - all you need to do is stick a flat piece of sheet metal in between the sheetrock and tin and screws into the sheet metal will hold the vent. I needed to drill a few pilot holes despite having self-tapping screws, but overall worked out great!
This is exactly my problem! I took out all the registers so that they could clean the ducts. But now the screws won't go back in and my registers look exactly like yours. I'll try this and let you know. Why wouldn't they make the holes further out so there's something to grip?
Mine fell this morning things are crumbling up there I have some pieces of 3/4 “ plywood to run the nail through but I don’t have a drill doing it by hand is not cutting it so gotta have a plan b
I just watched another video that simplifies the register problem. Instead of using washers and drilling bigger holes, use a piece of aluminum or sheet metal fold it and then slip it over the drywall and screw into the aluminum/sheet metal.
For sure that would work. Sometimes it is hard to find small pieces of sheet metal and then you are stuck buying a larger sheet unless you have another use for it.
The best fix I've used is a vent that is able to open - the type that you can direct the air flow. You take the side panels off the part that swings out and then you can attach the two shorter ends, through the vent, into the ducting with screws.
Has anyone tried it with a Toggle bolt anchor? That way you can shove it through then it'll open up and secure in theory. You'd lose the bolt every time you'd take the cover off but it'd probably still be worth it. I have several of these to do throughout my house
BEST way to do this fix would to make just one quick and easy mix of JB WELD EPOXY to attach the long machine threaded T-nuts to the metal vent frame quite SOLIDLY and PERMANENTLY. Just make darn sure you have a DIRECT METAL-to-METAL contact scenario when you epoxy the long machine-threaded T-nut to the metal duct frame. Use duct or aluminum tape to hold the long machine-threaded T-nuts in place until the JB WELD is fully cured in about 24 hours. If it is done carefully and accurately, I can guarantee you will NEVER need to mess with it EVER again. This would be the most ROCK SOLID way to fix this problem quite permanently. Hypothetically speaking, You could remove and replace the 2 machine-threaded mounting screws a HUNDRED TIMES and your threaded mounting holes would NEVER MOVE AT ALL when trying to put the metal cover back on. Just a little more time and effort expended, but with formidable end results, rather that just a quick fix.
Repeated HEATING of the tape (duct or aluminum types) will soften the adhesive on the sticky side of the tape and it WILL eventually FAIL. Been there, done that.
Then how do you reconnect the register cover when the previous installer cut out the drywall and just glued the stupid thing to the ceiling? This allows you to secure it to the drywall without completely replacing the whole setup.

What about carefully JB-Welding those rectangles to the duct holes so that you have a nice threaded hole to screw into

I liked the concept; simply used a toggle anchor bolt instead- The washer WAS the fix and it worked perfectly !

My vent screws ripped off from the sheet rock and it doesn't have those 2 holes from the duct either, will this work ??? 😔🤞🏻🤞🏻
