I think Universal is supposed to be doing that themselves. And while Arrow's edition is good, Turbine's German release adds a few exclusives like a new commentary, and Shout extras like documentaries/featurettes and the TV cut
I’m also very excited for Kino Lorber’s 4k releases. They have the original Mad Max and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind coming to 4k in the next few months. Kino’s Hannibal release was excellent too. The competition between these companies is mind blowing! All of us collectors are the ones really winning here

But the apocalypse now transfer is a close second. I'm buying every arrow video 4k release to support them in the hopes of one day a tarrantino 4k collection.
King of NY is the 3rd Abel Ferrara title arrow have released, hopefully some more are on the horizon. I’m guessing Ms. 45 might be the next 4K, even the standard blu-Ray is out of print. I was hoping criterion would get around to adding an Abel Ferrara film to their catalogue, but who knows when that will happen.
I feel like criterion’s first 4k is just around the corner. I’m going to go out on a limb and predict a Wong kar-wai boxset in 4k just in time for Christmas. Big prediction but it’s not out of the blue.we know all his films have been newly restored and there is literal no way criterion don’t know we want 4k’s. They are probably just waiting for the right time and film/films.
@@tompoynton It now appears that they are. What the first release will be is anybody's guess though. With BFI releasing 'The Seventh Seal' on 4K in October (and their being the company which handles Criterion releases in the UK), could that be coming on Criterion for North America?

I share your enthusiasm for those 4k releases. I really hope the Fly would get this treatment, I would even be happy with a 1080p arrow treatment with a 4k remaster tbh.
Crash was well over due an upgrade over the old DVD release. Was tempted to pick up the German 4K but glad I waited out for Arrow. Exciting news for Cronenberg fans!
Yeah, it is difficult to decide, because you don't know what the studios are going to end up doing. If it is released in Germany and you wait for a U.S. release but it never comes to the U.S., then by that time it might be too late to find the German release for a good price. Conversely if you get the German release right away and it does end up coming out in the U.S., then you might have spent more money importing it when you didn't have to. It's just hard to know what decision to make.
Thanks for the video Elliot! I am still on the cusp of jumping into 4K and this gave me some serious thoughts on the format. I am thankful for your thoughts :)
Xbox one X got me into it. I only buy my favorite films that I think might benefit from HDR or if I don't own a Blu-ray. I'm not upgrading every movie. I don't own crash so that looks tempting.
Synapse films have some very, very phenomenal HD transfers. They look phenomenal. They should maybe get into 4k as well. I really wish someone would release Wes cravens new nightmare in 4k. I think it would be awesome.
I would really love to see Arrow get their hands on Leone's The Man with No Name Trilogy for a 4K release. We know that Kino had planned one but later abandoned it. Those films have not been handled with the love and care deserving of such masterpieces, and it would be nice to see the different versions in top quality with 'proper' colour timing (although, I think the original vision was will always be up for debate).
I really want Arrow to commit to doing the big style release that they did for The Game. I hope that wasn't a one off! If they include a 4K disc in those kind of releases I'd be really stoked.
Crash is my most anticipated Blu Ray release for a long, long time. And the fact it's 4K, makes it even sweeter. Fingers crossed the release is amazing and other labels take note. Additionally, I don't think every film needs to be released on 4K, but a great deal of films will benefit from a UHD disc, particularly those shot on film in which a scan of the camera negative is required *cough-criterion-cough* Alot of modern films shot digitally, don't really need 4K as the picture is such good quality anyway. Just my 2 cents. Great video, your excitement was palpable aha.
That's fair enough, I totally understand! It will be interesting to see the effect that the PlayStation 5 has on 4K players being in peoples' homes. People may be more willing to try out a 4K disc if they have a player inside their games console.
4K discs are so worth it though, watching a good 4K transfer looks/feels absolutely luxurious! So I would recommend upgrading, even if the difference isn't AS apparent/drastic as the difference between DVD and Blu Ray. That being said, though, there are some 4K transfers that aren't as good quality (i.e. Terminator 2 unfortunately) and probably wouldn't be worth it over the Blu Ray, so just do your research and look at comparisons, reviews, screencaps, etc.
I have to admit that I like Arrow more than I like Criterion these days - Criterion still does higher quality films in general, but Arrow makes better discs. Compare the Gamera set to anything else released in the last five years, and I don't think there is a better set out there.
I agree, in that Arrow have come a long way over the years! I know many people say that the Gamera set blows Criterion's Godzilla set right out of the water. And it definitely says something that they have adopted 4K releases first..
For a long time, the best version of a movie was the Criterion version. But those days are slowly fading. Criterion needs to jump on the 4K wagon, otherwise they will loose a lot of customers I think.
@@ElliotCoen Criterion still have the "highbrow" cinema market covered, but Arrow is definitely lighting it up in terms of how they put a release together, especially the box sets. Even Second Sight lately are eclipsing Criterion. I have not received my Varda box set yet as it's still sitting in my Shipito warehouse in Oregon but from reviews it seems it's a tad flimsy and nothing like the quality of their massive Bergman set. There seems to be some controversy floating about also of the quality of the transfers, particular around the colour timings in some of them (though have not been able to verify this myself yet). Of course we all want definitive box sets but we don't want to be having quality skimped in any way, especially given how costly these sets are. The Gamera set is hardly "highbrow" cinema or even that well known outside Japan but look at the quality of the set - it's stunning. Both the disc content as well as the packaging is incredible. As was the Bergman box mind you. I'm not saying the Godzilla and Varda sets aren't amazing and must haves but just feels like both sets could have been just a tad more carefully handled. Let's hope the Criterion Fellini set is a return to "Bergman box" (or Zatoichi box) form. I know it sounds like im being really picky about Criterion and these great sets but Criterion themselves set the benchmark high and now other boutique labels are reaching them and even surpassing them in some instances - but I guess with the bar being so high now in the boutique physical media industry (look at what Blue Underground is doing with 4k for example) it can only be good news for the obsessed collector/film fans like ourselves!
Great video and great channel. I love 4k blu ray and physical media in general. War Of The Worlds, the 1953 version was released recently on blu ray with stunning picture and sound quality. I know there is a 4k master of this film. Do you think it will therefore be released on 4k blu ray? Thank you in advance.
I have upgraded my entertainment center to 4k, and I'm slowly converting the library to 4k. I'm really excited for the titles Arrow has been putting out. Particularly crash. I can't wait to have a 4k copy
Heard a rumour that sainsburys will stop stocking physical media in the UK soon, think physical media will become niche over the next year, with streaming becoming more mainstream partly due to the lockdowns, I can see major studios adopting the streaming route and leasing out rights for films to smaller companies such as Arrow think we will get much more in the way of limited releases and possibly price increases as there won't be such big print runs but hopefully enough releases to keep these smaller companies going there is a market for this just much smaller than we have seen upto now!
This has now sadly come to pass. Whether it's the terrible news you might think or just meh! really depends. Sainsburys were hardly the kind of place you'd find the discs put out by Arrow, Criterion, BFI, Indicator, 88 etc. More likely the people who'd buy blu-rays at a supermarket are (for the most part) the kind who'd maybe pick up a couple of discs a year maximum.
Preordered Crash because of the stock issues and don't want to miss it - I've been needing this since Turbine announced the 4K restoration in 2018. (The French 4K seems to be barebones - unless they're yet to announce something.) Most of the extras were made by Calum Waddell for Turbine's release, but Arrow adds the commentary, video essay and booklet. I adore Cronenberg (he actually appeared in my dream last night - I had to babysit for him!) I've seen most of his films - including his half hour TV shorts that only seem to be available on RUclips (and maybe a Japanese DVD?) I'm looking forward to Brandon Cronenberg's Possessor - unfortunately it's being released over here by Signature Entertainment, so I doubt it will get any special treatment - and the US will get a longer cut on VOD. There's actually a new David Cronenberg film this year - he stars in the Canadian horror film Disappearance at Clifton Hill! But, some Cronenberg needs upgrading - Naked Lunch has only been released on a barebones Blu-ray in the UK, Fast Company only on Blu-ray in the US, Dead Ringers no domestic Blu-ray, and M. Butterfly and Spider only on DVD. Even A Dangerous Method is OOP in the UK! I just picked up the DVD of King of New York for some exclusive extras, but rather foolish because those extras aren't worth anyone's time and the 4K will be much better. I've actually only seen it as a RUclips rip! Just wish Bicycle Thieves would be 4K UHD. I already have Flash Gordon being posted to me, and I think I'll be getting a 4K player ready for November or so - especially with Dawn of the Dead. For some titles the Blu-ray is enough, but many 4Ks are newer restorations than the Blu-ray, or aren't combo packs with a Blu-ray so you need the newer player. I expect the difference is probably people adopting 4K for the new generation of game consoles - PS2 is tied to the growth of DVD as well. What films are on your list Elliot? I can live with DVDs a lot of the time if it's the only option.
It will be very interesting to hear your thoughts as a first time CRASH viewer. It is ... ummmm... different. 😁 (I am not saying it is bad, just different, even for Cronenberg. Lol) Definitely also onboard with KING OF NEW YORK. I'm not a huge fan of gangster movies, but I enjoy this one.
Hi Elliott! Do you think Arrow would release a 4K of Pulp Fiction? GoodFellas? Not sure about how Pulp Fiction was shot on 35 MM Film and if it would transfer to 4K well? Also, GoodFellas was lazily done in 4K... thoughts? Aware of any releases on horizon? Thanks.
Hi Steven. I'm not aware of either of those coming to Arrow BUT I wouldn't rule it out, as they already have the licenses to Inglorious Basterds and The Wolf of Wall Street. I know there's already a Goodfellas 4K out there, but I can't speak to its quality. Thanks for watching :)
Bla Bla there is another RUclips Channel Films at. home who said it made his list as one of the worst 4K transfers and lazy on features and soundtrack. I’ll have to check it out for myself but I feel it’s “Arrow-Worthy”
I accidentally stumbled across The Brood as a child on VHS tape , I was only 7 or 8 and that film crapped the life out of me , I’ll definitely be not making that mistake with my little one 😂
Another great video Elliot. What do you think of Arrow releasing Silent Running but only on Blu-ray as a 2k restoration, seems a backward step, surely worthy of a 4k upgrade. Wonder how it will compare to the Eureka issue which is now a few years old.
Interesting stuff as always Elliot, I'm a longtime collector of Blu-rays and cannot (currently) warrant the 4K upgrade. Whilst I'd love to see how good this format can look, I'm still very happy with how my blu-rays look and sound. Yesterday I watched the DVD released of Hitcock's The Birds, and was surprised to find that the quality didn't bother me much - sure a nicer restoration on Blu-ray or 4K would clean up the image somewhat, but it was very watchable. Ironically, I work as a videographer, who has specialised in 4K video production for several years now, but I'd rather not watch my film collection on a 24" monitor.
I see a slight problem in the fact, that while You are chosing 4k version of the film You are not automatically provided with the full-HD disk as well. It seems to be more or less standard (and aplaudable) practice elsewhere, not with Arrow though. Oh well .. I'm a great fan of Arrow, but this bugs me.
Crash is worth the wait. Adults only movie. It atmosphere is a character too .Requires repeated viewing. With Christopher Walken You Need more Cow 🔔 Bell😂😂😂 It is a Saturday Night Live reference to his appearance on the show as a music producer who was mixing the song from the 1970s. Don't Fear the Reaper and they had Will Ferrell do cow bell instrument to add to the Song. I don't how much comedy we have that translates well. My favorite is Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series in the 1980s Im Marvin I'm a Robot I'm So depressing Nobody wants to talk to me.I would not to talk with me either. 🤪🤪🤪
Apparently, the Panasonic 4K players allow you to do the top menu trick so you can play Region A Criterions through them - this has been discussed on blu-ray.com forum
I have the german release of Crash on 4k uhd (And saw it at the cinema back in 1996 when it came out), nice extras (among them three shorts by Cronenberg), but different from the Arrow release so I preordered that as well. I’ve bought or preordered all of their 4k UHD UK releases. Thank you for championing 4k. Love your videos. Inglorious Bastards was scheduled to be release on 4K here in Norway this fall (another preorder), but just got a mail saying it would be pushed well into 2021. If there's a chance of getting an Arrow release I'll cancel my order. :). Oh by the way, Crash looks great on the 4k release, and the new blu-ray also looks good.
Don't get me started on the arrow postcards. I found the A Fist Full Of Fingers card, Edgar Wright's early ametur feature. It's been more than teased for years now, and it was supposed to be released a couple years ago, loads of hints and teases in the run up, then all of a sudden, nothing. Not a shred of info since lol
4K woooo! Are they going to just upscale it, or are they really going to work on it like Ran by Akira Kurosawa from canalstudio which you can actually see they made it 4K.
@@ElliotCoen incredible! Ah definitely excited now. Btw are you watching anything tonight? And lastly do you mind if I asked you what profession it is you do? 😊👍🏼
Great defence of not yet seeing Crash, personally I'm old enough to have bought the DVD when it came out 🤣 pre ordered both of these 4Ks I have Pitch Black it looks good but not as good as other titles I have. Have you got the Blue Underground titles? They're essential, although maybe Arrow will get around to them 🤔
I recently bought kings of New York Arrow release so it’s a bit annoying but I haven’t watched it yet and wasn’t aware the quality was poor so think I will get the 4K release now and try and sell my BD 👍
Surely the king of New York release will be the same transfer and 4k restoration that was but on blu ray but obviously the full uncompressed file. Still the same restoration from before though surely? Personally loved the original arrow transfer. I highly doubt they will go to the original and restore again when they have the 4k file already.
Thanks for the clarification 👍 thought it was a 4k master down scaled to 1080 like most arrow releases. Haven't watched my arrow steelbook of it for a few years so my memory of it must be wrong. Be great to see how the new transfer turns out.
I saw crash at my local art house theater when it released haven't watched it since then the DVD was garbage can't wait, never seen the unrated cut, criterion has to respond with 4k
I wish Arrow would release Rocky Horror Picture Show on 4K. A huge cult film that would look great on 4K...but alas it is stuck in Disney’s pocket now so who knows.
I can foresee Disney selling rights to 4k licences in a similar fashion to what they do with their merchandising. Esp since they have so many movies now in their archive.
Still a tad on the fence about these purely because I think Arrows artwork is awful. They have a couple of good artists they commission but I honestly find 85% look mediocre to painfully bad. And considering Crash is a UK only release there’s a chance someone else in the US will release it in an equal package - hopefully with better art
It's a term given to blu-rays released by certain labels such as Arrow Video, or the Criterion Collection. They tend to be collectible in nature and will provide great packaging, extra features etc.
@@ElliotCoen oh yes I like those. Not all of them, because I am more into the plain stuff like horror, action or asian movies and only sometimes into the arthouse type of movies.

Hehe, I am sure I'll be doing a first time review of it on the channel nearer the time. I'm expecting the unexpected!
I thought goodfellas 4k was good and casino
Bla Bla there is another RUclips Channel Films at. home who said it made his list as one of the worst 4K transfers and lazy on features and soundtrack. I’ll have to check it out for myself but I feel it’s “Arrow-Worthy”
I accidentally stumbled across The Brood as a child on VHS tape , I was only 7 or 8 and that film crapped the life out of me , I’ll definitely be not making that mistake with my little one 😂
Oh my goodness, I couldn't imagine seeing it that young!
Another great video Elliot. What do you think of Arrow releasing Silent Running but only on Blu-ray as a 2k restoration, seems a backward step, surely worthy of a 4k upgrade. Wonder how it will compare to the Eureka issue which is now a few years old.
Crash has not got a Blu-ray release so this is great! hope it makes it to the US.
Hi
I have the German 4k mediabook of crash.
Awesome quality in picture and sound.
But no doubt the arrow video will look great too
I'm glad to hear the German release is a good one. I'm hoping the Arrow release will be great too :)
Blue Underground has matched and surpassed some Arrow realeases with their efforts.
No need for them in my opinion
Crash is worth the wait. Adults only movie.
It atmosphere is a character too .Requires
repeated viewing. With Christopher Walken You Need more Cow 🔔 Bell😂😂😂
It is a Saturday Night Live reference to his appearance on the show as a music producer who was mixing the song from the 1970s.
Where can i get a good regionfree bluray player? Want to be able to play Criterion titles from the US.
Most players are available at Currys/PC World, Richer Sounds etc. You can get Sony, Panasonic, Pioneer, Cambridge Audio players.
I got one for a fair price on Amazon. Panasonic.
The thing definitely
Does Arrow have 50% off sales like Criterion?
Don't get me started on the arrow postcards. I found the A Fist Full Of Fingers card, Edgar Wright's early ametur feature. It's been more than teased for years now, and it was supposed to be released a couple years ago, loads of hints and teases in the run up, then all of a sudden, nothing. Not a shred of info since lol
Crash on 4K? oh my. cover your eyes children 👀
4K woooo! Are they going to just upscale it, or are they really going to work on it like Ran by Akira Kurosawa from canalstudio which you can actually see they made it 4K.
No upscales! Both of these are reportedly being taken from new 4K restorations, which is great news :)
They're essential, although maybe Arrow will get around to them 🤔
Criterion has had a great Blu-ray for a crash for a while were you aware of that
I recently bought kings of New York Arrow release so it’s a bit annoying but I haven’t watched it yet and wasn’t aware the quality was poor so think I will get the 4K release now and try and sell my BD 👍
A lovely gin and tonic with ice and a slice of lime.
Refreshing!
Sooo they gonna cost a lot?
Surely the king of New York release will be the same transfer and 4k restoration that was but on blu ray but obviously the full uncompressed file. Still the same restoration from before though surely? Personally loved the original arrow transfer. I highly doubt they will go to the original and restore again when they have the 4k file already.
The old Blu-ray was from an old HD master. This is a brand new restoration of the film in 4K for the first time, so it should look brilliant!
Thanks for the clarification 👍 thought it was a 4k master down scaled to 1080 like most arrow releases. Haven't watched my arrow steelbook of it for a few years so my memory of it must be wrong. Be great to see how the new transfer turns out.
I like Arrow ➡ They release films of a cult appeal. I'm into Italian Westerns, and they have some key titles. 🤠 🍝 🔫
Oh yeah! I still need to get my hands on the Django release, someway somehow.
I hope they (Arrow) also don’t neglect the audio...like only doing 5.1...
Very true. Audio is such an important thing when it comes to these 4K discs. Nothing beats a great Atmos track.
I saw crash at my local art house theater when it released haven't watched it since then the DVD was garbage can't wait, never seen the unrated cut, criterion has to respond with 4k
More bass
Hi. What do you mean by this?
@@ElliotCoen sound is low
I wish Arrow would release Rocky Horror Picture Show on 4K. A huge cult film that would look great on 4K...but alas it is stuck in Disney’s pocket now so who knows.
That would be a dream. I really hope Disney change their plans regarding home releases.
What are boutique blu-rays? Fashion shop blu-rays doesn't fit somehow. Sorry but I'm not native english speaking.
Crash is way over rated. It's a cliched mess with a ton of unlikable characters. Definitely a movie I will not own. If I was you, I'd watch it first unless you just buy everything good or bad.
You're not getting it confused with the other film called Crash from 2004 right? The one that won best picture. That has loads of characters and, I agree, is not a great film!
Why are you always whispering
Not whispering, that's just how my voice sounds!
Why your vocal are always hissing in all your videos..
While hering I'm feeling worst audio experience ever.
Hello. I do not hear the issue you speak of but I'm sorry if it isn't listenable. I will try to work out what is causing it. I haven't heard the issue from anyone else yet
@@ElliotCoen
In your voice the air out (High frequency) is too high, is causing this issue.
Decrease the highs it will be settle down...👍
@@ashok42261 OK I will try that. Thanks
Synapse films have some very, very phenomenal HD transfers. They look phenomenal. They should maybe get into 4k as well. I really wish someone would release Wes cravens new nightmare in 4k. I think it would be awesome.
