I played this so much as a kid, I can just turn my brain off and go straight where you need to go. It's kind of amazing that this whole map is somewhere in my brain after all these years.
I think Marmaduke got discontinued in newspapers last year. It's a shame, just as I find out about it. Oh well, some of the comic strips should be floating around on the web. They look hilarious.
This game was soooo hard. I remember going over to my friend's house after school and we would take turns playing trying to beat it, much like James and Mike here, and we needed to make maps, use a million continues, pause the game to eat then come back to it... it would take HOURS to get through it and I'm still amazed his NES didn't overheat or glitch out. Very fun game, but very challenging. Also had some of the best audio in the NES library.
This right here is one of the reason I really enjoy James and Mike Mondays, because this is exactly what me and my friends would do when we were younger playing video games. We'd be really into it for an hour or so, then we'd get to talking about a movie or album or something, and even if we were doing well at the game we'd lose interest and start watching that movie or listening to that album. All the Marmaduke stuff has my face hurting from laughing.
I hope these James and Mike Monday videos continue. It's very entertaining just watching them sit back and play through these old games. That's what gaming used to be all about before online play and social networking...just have a buddy over, and play through a good game together. As much as I enjoy these James and Mike videos though...I'd really love to see the AVGN episodes start being released on a regular basis again, even if it's just one episode a month.
Oh man. Coming back to Area 1 to Hover up the side of the mountain is uncharted territory for me! One of my favorite things about RUclips is being able to see areas of old games I was never able to reach!
I was laughing my ass off during the Hover portion as it brought back so many great memories of this game. I also loved that you put a disclaimer that the "game is awesome" when you were bitching it out for making you go back to farm "H." LOL
I love the interactions between the both of yous! It makes for great entertainment. I almost lost it when James was comparing the lack luster characteristics of Marmaduke. XD
Does anyone else think it might be cool to see James and Mike play some of the PS2 era grand theft auto games but not just driving around actually playing some of the harder missions. Just a suggestion for a future Mondays episode
211Appolo I love the AVGN videos, but I think I can also agree, at least for the most part... When James & Mike Mondays started, they were mainly doing videos on bad games, mostly to have a laugh and stuff. Lately, they've actually been doing a lot of great games together - several that I would've loved to see included among AVGN episodes, but that wouldn't happen because they're good games - so, I've been having a lot of fun watching these. Basically, I'm hooked on these now almost as much as I was with older Nerd videos, back in the day.
My favorite game on the whole NES. I didn't known about metroid back there, so gameplay was blowminded for me. Remarkable music. And most of all i like this neat tile design. Every look at the levels makes my eyes to rejoyse. If you dont count Areas 7 and 8. They way too toxic. I was very intrested about what the next power up i will collect and what kind of level lies beyong the next gate. I had never made it through ice caves of area 6 back on the Famicom because of this "blue-longarms-wagina" boss. So i hope there will be the Part 3 to look how you'll beat it.
This is one of few NES games I really liked. I didn't make it very far, but I always had fun trying. Pretty crazy seeing what you have to go through to get certain abilities.
It was really cool to see you guys play this game. I've been waiting patiently for this. I used to play this game a lot as a kid. I would recommend Blaster Master Overdrive for the Wii if you liked this game. So did you guys ever figure out how to use SOPHIA's special weapons? I didn't see you using them. They can make those caterpillar robots a hell of a lot less frustrating. SOPHIA is the vehicle's name by the way if you didn't already know.
Seeing this gameplay gives me flashbacks to how I spent my childhood saturday mornings. By the time I was done playing this one - I could get all the way to the end without dying once. Super hard game to finish but a classic none the less. good pick guys.
@@shawnyfin for the bosses in stage 2, 4, 6 and 7, you gotta pause when using the grenade gun and just leave it on pause for like 15 seconds The trick is hitting them in the right spots
Sunsoft games really had the best music. I'm gonna find the music from this game, plus Batman and Gremlins 2 and make a playlist for when I'm playing Diablo 3. Old school VGM music rules.
Ok so now when the movie is done, here is a request list: - MORE Bullshit videos - MORE Game glitches videos - MORE Board James - A NEW Shit pickle series - And if you have spare time, maybe AVGN: The Movie 2 Thanks! (:
Brandon Silva de Matos i can see how it would be more chill in james' current situation to wind down with some games in his man cave with some friends, instead of forcing himself to be funny and spending hours on making nerd videos. Whoa, long sentence...Then again it depends on he has a day job, I have no idea
Ozterkvlt Don't get me wrong, I miss the old Nerd's magic just as much as the next guy. But, I can understand what's going on over his side without a doubt. However, I have no idea if he has a day job or not lmao.
One of the best NES games. The depth, challenge and creativity is second to none for the machine. The only flaw is the limited continues and lack of password.
Hey, just in case anyone was wondering how a game could get away with being so cryptic? There's actually a breakdown of areas with maps and such and where you need to go when in the instruction booklet, if you still have it.
I've never saw the movie, but I do remember the comic strip "Marmaduke" in the Daily News comics section. There was also an animated series called "Heathcliff & Marmaduke" back in the early 1980's from Ruby/Spears, this was before Heathcliff had his own series for DIC back in the mid-80's.
Honestly this is an amazing NES game, it gets better half way through it when you get some upgrades. This is so much fun after 3 hrs or so. Great video, thanks!
Do you have "Wrath of the Black Manta" in your collection? I remember loving that one as a kid. There was a boss called 'Tiny', who I thought was hilarious. Anyway, it would be great to see it again, should you guys ever film that one, please :)
Painful! Thanks for enduring the torment for our entertainment :) Again, I've said it before, but I really like the capturing of playing co-op with a buddy and passing the controller off. Not all Let's Plays showcase that aspect of the 'ritual' and wanted to give kudos for that. I hope you guys have received lots of support on your efforts with the Mondays videos and that you know your fans enjoy them.
Pihutihutihutijay The only thing with that is you never knew if when you went back to it the game hadn't glitched out and needed to be reset. Even back when it was "new" it was still prone to crashing. The NES, that is.
Yeah right, the only way to "crash" a NES was to punt it across the room while it was still on. I have never had a game crash without outside interference.
I literally just watched Mike & Erin talking about Marmaduke this morning, before binging on James and Mike Mondays. I totally forgot the Marmaduke discussion here!
Congrats on a great movie guys. I really enjoyed it. Just watched it on Vimeo. A massive E.T review we all were waiting for and I am glad it was done that way. The twists were funny and clever, and I like the whole B-movie vibe you went for. I hope you continue to do many other projects. Of course, never dismiss AVGN, but I could tell you guys were excited to finish the movie and just see everyone gawk at its beauty of production. Never mind the haters. Continue to do good work, coz you give inspiration to some growing video/movie creators who want their foot out the door, and you have just shown that passion and good friends was how you can make it big. Please never retire too early and continue on until you get all your goals fulfilled.
aw, come on, guys, finish the damn thing! i got up to boss 6 between your first video and your second. AND DAMNIT PRESS DOWN AND B TO SHOOT SPECIALS IN THE TANK.
awesome two part series guys. Brought back so many memories. All I was thinking about was how you had to go back to the start after getting hover... I was waiting for the reaction lol. So did you guys wind up beating it? I beat it once. Once time I left my NES on for days because I didnt want to lose my game.... came back and it was frozen.... damn.....
This is what gaming really is, playing with your friends and having fun while you talk and shit. Today kids never gonna know what gaming is about, they just enjoy harassing people calling them "noob" and play shitty games like CoD.
At 6:20 you guys got the hover and start searching for the next level, this is where I was always stuck as a kid. I spent countless hours trying to figure out where to go, farming hover and using it in every dumb spot I could think of. 20 odd years later I watch a play through and guess what, you're supposed to go all the way back to the beginning of the game and hover over the wall on the left. I'm amazed Mike knew where to find it.
Menthols you don't have to take my word for it I figured you guys would have just done a youtube search there's at least a dozen people have done it under 15 minutes I think the record is 10 minutes 30 seconds of something ridiculous like that.
I like watching you two play video games. It reminds me a lot of when I would play video games with my friends in college (we had a few "Marmaduke Moments" ourselves).
It's pretty hilarious to watch them struggle with this game. Considering I can beat it without any problem. But i have been playing it since I was a kid. And I think they did say they never beat it.
Part 3 good sirs? Played the game several time myself and I never got past stage 5. You're on the cusp of showing me new content!! =) Please and thank you.
Never heard of Marmaduke till this video, Thanks James & Mike! :) Read some of them today, and definitely enjoyed it. Sad to read about the passing of Brad Anderson a couple months ago. Blaster Master was always confusing & frustrating for me too. Great vid guys! :)
I find the story of this game very sad. I mean, imagine being a child, then your pet escapes and turns into a mutant which you have to kill. And I love the music in this, it's very melodic and joyful.
I'm glad to read, there will be more AVGN episodes hopefully soon! You are great!!! As a long time fan, I can't wait! Thank for the quality entertaining, guys!
This game is hard....but one of my favorites for NES. I usually used my game genie, but that only gives you infinite lives, not infinite health. One major secret thought is a trick that works on select bosses where you use the grenade to attack. You attack the boss and while he's flashing, pause the game. After about a minute, unpause, and he's dead. This does not work on the crab boss you see at the end of the video. That boss is hard, and you really need to enter the battle with a fully powered gun.
I actually owned Blaster Master and the Crab boss would really determine everything. You couldn't use the Pause-kill trick on him and if you didn't have your gun powered up enough, it's all over since his bubble shot gets insane near the end. Only once did I manage to beat him and the game gets REAL fun after that. Great review and Marmaduke strips!
Like James & Mike Mondays? See more game playthroughs with Mike on Twitch!

Now after all this time, you should make a long overdue part 3 where you finally return to this game and beat it
I know the whole game by heart
its a cool game nah dont draw a map explore it
Please make part 3! Blast some more!
I played this so much as a kid, I can just turn my brain off and go straight where you need to go. It's kind of amazing that this whole map is somewhere in my brain after all these years.
Thanks for the countless hours of entertainment James & Mike!
I second that, these guys are hilarious
That and ten years of entertainment from both of them all together. :)
I came for Blaster Master, I stayed for Marmaduke.
I think Marmaduke got discontinued in newspapers last year. It's a shame, just as I find out about it. Oh well, some of the comic strips should be floating around on the web. They look hilarious.
Didn't we all
Well I guess Marmaduke was angry he couldnt MASTER your BLASTER... fab-you-LUUUSSSSS!!!!

honestly, i think blaster master is one of the best controlling NES games ever made
And Zero has some of the slipperiest ever. At least that has strafing but would improve so much with twin stick controls for dungeons.
I was laughing my ass off during the Hover portion as it brought back so many great memories of this game. I also loved that you put a disclaimer that the "game is awesome" when you were bitching it out for making you go back to farm "H." LOL
I really hope there will be a part 3. I enjoy seeing James and Mike playing through the games fully
l was lmao when Mike screamed NOOOOOO when the hover ran out
Area 7 was my favorite solely because the music, it was a good tune to drive around & blast the enemies to.
I love the interactions between the both of yous! It makes for great entertainment. I almost lost it when James was comparing the lack luster characteristics of Marmaduke. XD
Blaster Master had startling gaming innovations like shooting a giant enemy crab in its weak spot for massive damage.
Legend has it that there was a port to the Genesis but Blaster Master paired with blast processing drove all who played it to madness.
Next up - James and Mike read Marmaduke :)
........yes
NES at it's greatest!! I loved this era in gaming so much. I remember renting this game when it came out I was 8... I'm old now..
Marmaduke and Clifford the Big Red Dog LOL, I was cracking up at that 4:39

Pretty much! hahahahahahaa
I'm going to be honest here. I'm starting enjoy these more than the AVGN episodes.

where is part 3? did you complete it?
I admit, I normally kind of skip through these videos or just listen to it in the background, but I found Blaster Master really fun to watch.
You don´t know the pause trick at bosses ?
they don't
Do tell! I just had my nes restored. I smashed through Dragon Warrior and was looking into this game next....

Blastphemy!
The Genesis version is garbage.

"This game is so fuckin' BLAST!"
Broke this one out last night; I forgot how good this game is.
Best part of this video was definitely the Marmaduke discussion
You should try using the homing missiles, the three way missiles and the lighting weapon. Game is more fun using them.
in the last Marmaduke picture I thought it was doing the Moonwalk like Michael Jackson
The movement lines make it look like he's hopping forward. I also thought it was a Michael Jackson thing when I first saw it.
That is what he's doing. Thriller was probably new when that strip was made.
When I woke up this mornin I didn't expect to hear James n' Mike talk about god damn Marmaduke, love you guys man
aw, come on, guys, finish the damn thing!
i got up to boss 6 between your first video and your second.

With all this thinking and teamwork you guys do, I'd love to see you guys play Legacy of the Wizard.
play pocky and rocky for the SNES!
it's a shooter and it's 2 player!
I remember the Marmaduke cartoons in a newspaper I used to get at my old house. As for level 4, I like the pixel work with the grays and the greens.

The intensity on James' face while fighting that boss. Haha.

i read it, than did it lol. trolled.

That joke is getting`real old now.
AVGN is so baked and relaxed 😂
Never heard of Marmaduke till this video, Thanks James & Mike! :) Read some of them today, and definitely enjoyed it. Sad to read about the passing of Brad Anderson a couple months ago.
Blaster Master was always confusing & frustrating for me too. Great vid guys! :)
"I thought he was balancing the thing on his ass" - priceless
I always used homing missiles for the Hover Cliff. You guys did it the hard way.
I find the story of this game very sad. I mean, imagine being a child, then your pet escapes and turns into a mutant which you have to kill.
And I love the music in this, it's very melodic and joyful.
Doing an AVGN marathon after this, ending it off with my first screening of the AVGN movie, gonna be the best tuesday ever!
Great gameplay video as always, and the commentary is very funny.
Look at James face when hes fighting that square boss fight loooool. Shit is super serious. Funny as hell
Mike is so funny! Awesome vid, guys!
The movie was AWESOME, good job Nerd.
I'm glad to read, there will be more AVGN episodes hopefully soon! You are great!!! As a long time fan, I can't wait! Thank for the quality entertaining, guys!
one of my favorite nes games ahhhh memories

Not only a remastered version, but two sequels to said remaster that ties the entirety of the Blaster Master storyline to Metafight.
