I had a trache for 6 weeks when I was critically ill. It was rare that any nurses, drs, therapists, etc spoke directly to me. My legs were paralyzed, as was one arm. I had a writing board, but it would be taken away from me often. Two offenses i made were - asking for my glasses & asking for my family. I had a physical therapist who consistently called me by the wrong name. When I was moved from ICU, I still had the trache, the nurse told me she didn’t know how to care for a patient w a trache. I was terrified. Another nurse told me my family couldn’t be bothered by me. I did relearn to walk, relearn to use my both of my hands, & relearn to swallow. I did recover, but I see a therapist for PTSD - eight years later I still don’t sleep through the night.
