    PHYSIOTHERPY is an integral part of care in a critical care unit, where in by different techniques , secretions in lungs and respiratory tract are mobilised or made loose.
    It's very useful in patients on prolonged bed rest or in patients on mechanical ventilation.
    Chest physiotherapy should never be done straight after a meal or drink..
    Goals of Physiotherapy:-
    Airway secretion clearance
    Recruitment of lung volume or improvement of atelectasis
    Maintenance/improvement of oxygenation
    Maintenance/improvement inspiratory muscle strength.
    Respiratory Physiotherapy Techniques:
    Positioning,
    Manual and ventilator hyperinflation,
    Percussion, vibration, suctioning,
    Respiratory muscle strengthening,
    Breathing exercises and mobilisation.
    Contraindications :-
    Increased ICP
    Unstable head or neck injury
    Active hemorrhage or hemoptysis
    Recent spinal injury
    Rib fracture
    Flail chest
    Uncontrolled hypertension
    Anticoagulation
    Thoracic surgeries.
    Broncho-pleural fistula
    Precautions:-
    Keep suction apparatus & emergency airway & oxygen therapy while providing chest physiotherapy.
    The patient should be monitored throughout therapy.
    Adrenergic bronchodilators in solution should be available in case of bronchospasm during therapies.
    Provide coughing instruction prior to therapy.
    Suctioning of trachea is essential

    can we give chest physio to a coma patient who doesnt have tracheostomy tube
    if ever we give then should we do oropharyngeal suction

      Thanks for watching...yes coma patients definitely need chest physiotherapy... along with oropharyngeal suctioning, postural drainage also helps...
