There is nothing more frustrating then being the aggressor and in control of the point and then a unforced error. Applegren was definitely showing his maturity and experience in this match by just keeping the ball in play & wait for Waldner to self destruct. I'm glad Waldner went on to become probably the greatest player and have a very solid mentality.
I understand the frustration Waldner...I once had an older player went psycho on me during a match, he was YELLING at me, I thought but later found out that he was yelling at the ball "common ball, we can do it, but I need your help" Table tennis players can be crazy sometimes.
i remember watching in an interview with waldner that his father had disciplined him after this match a lot. after this, he never acted badly by throwing his racket around as seen here.
Unusual to see Waldner (Mr. Cool) get this flustered, but he was always a perfectionist, and here he was only 17. He had a long career in front of him. (he sure was slim back then)
When the European championship was in Sweden 1990,Swedish television showed some points with Swedes from earlier ettc finals. They showed some points from this final and since then ive been looking to see more of this!! Thanks Ikaruspingpong.
I've been watching Waldner for a lot of years so far, and I would have never guessed that the always-well-behaved Waldner was once this badly behaved can't-handle-losing young man. I'm glad people change.
I think by then JO had already made up his mind that he wanted a world title, to be world champion, etc., so he was setting very high goals for himself, and therefore a lot of pressure to win every match. Plus he was very young.
@@jonneville2287 Nope,he started thinking about winning majors after the 1982 European Championship.Appelgren was like a brother to him and had the mental edge.
Realistically, all us low level players should probably be playing like this: use 5-ply allround blade, keep the ball on the table, patiently wait to attack.
Wonderful to watch both of them, but sorry. I like the play style of applet...but to me it is not to understand why the referee said nothing about the backhand service of appelgren...I mean he did not throw the ball! It is direct from the hand....maybe legal at this stage, I don't know...nowadays it would be incorrect anyway.
You have that wrong. Bieber hairstyle = Appelgren hairstyle: ;-) Do the chronological math, boy! History repeats...Bieber is copying an old school hairstyle.
@@HoWeiTeTe The competition to get into the Swedish national team was though at the time, Stellan Bengtsson, Ulf Carlsson, Erik Lind, Ulf Bengtsson apart from JO and Appelgren made it hard for Jorgen.

4:09 Impressive point, Mikael Appelgren did not expect this return.

THANK YOU for posting this video!!! This is the match I have always wanted to see. The boy genius who was beating grown men.

こんな若いワルドナーの試合を見たのは初めて^^
ありがとうございます。arigatou☆
天才少年ワルドナーが17・18才のときですね。アペルグレンが当時のエースで、日本で言えばアペルグレンが水谷、ワルドナーが張本みたいな感じですね
A lot of finesse in this match.
Thanks, a good picture quality.
Wow, JO Waldner the Iceman used to be a Hothead at 17.
That is a new revelation to me.
Thanks for this nice document of JOW career :D
Both players were so young. Appelgren is 4 years older than Waldner.

4 give or take a couple of weeks.
Appelgren born 15th of October 1961.
Waldner born 3rd of October 1965.
yep, ive never seen more than a couple of min. of this footage. Thanks, please post more old Waldner footage if you have it.
Note the wooden floor. Slippery as hell and the reason why many players avoided extensively jumping around as today.
Wow.
When JOW was 17 they already had videotape!

reminds me the clockwork orange movie characters.
WHAT!!!!!!!!!!!!! Waldner was that skinny last time?!?!??! And he actually threw his bat at the table O.O

Junior Waldner reminds me of Junior Federer with racquet throwing.
he was 16 !
Just say waldner was 16
Are you serious? This is from 1982, lol
Do you have the whole match! i always wanted to see this match.

Dang! Wish Waldi would have won that.
WHY do they always go and stroke the table?
Who is typing away in the background?
waldner got nervous style ??

any1 know what jorgen persson was doing at the time?
Detherocable he Was losing
Jörgen Persson is even younger than Jan Ove Waldner -> he just didn't participate in 1982. His first European Championship appearance was in 1986.
He made his first appearance at the national championships in Ystad, 1981. He then lost to Roger Lagerfeldt in straight sets.

Appelgren hairstyle = Bieber :P
but the main difference between them: appelgren had ball control while beiber had none to control...lol
