One Of The Most Unique Volcano Towns In The World - Grindavik Rescued With Lava Walls

  • We dont get top see something like this very often but the town is now around 80% surrounded with lava and the eruption is still producing a whole lot more. I do however think that the worst is over but there are limits to what this method can do. There are however experts here that believe that this event will come to an end in July or August, so let's hope we can handle this until then.
I don't have any good news for volcano tourists, the weather is miserable and will be like that all next week on top of the access restrictions. It's not even possible to do any serious filming now so I was a bit lucky get this clip, but s soon as I have the chance, I will do more tours there to demonstrate the landscape changes. Some to the "before" shots we published last year in this mini doc I made about Grindavik, and aged pretty well as for the possible scenarios i mentioned back them.

This reminds me of something you said yesterday, someone says 'Oh the road is now covered in lava' and the next person says 'oh that's OK we'll just cover it with gravel'. While the rest of the world complains about small things the Icelandic spirit puts them to shame xx

I've seen the IMO map of the new lava field, but this latest video provides a much striking impression of how badly Grindavik is now hemmed in, protected only by its extended ramparts.

Knowing what we now know, you'd probably never plan to have Grindavik where it is, but towns grow where they grow.
This vid is probably the first really effective film of the lava barriers and just how effective they are. Let's hope nature doesn't have other ideas!

I'm not sure if 'rescued' is the right word? I think the correct word should be 'preserved' (for history). I honestly do not foresee anyone living in that town again. Or at least, not within the next 5-10 years anyway.

A two-dimensional lava flow map presented by the Iceland Met Office pales in comparison to the real video. It's stacked pretty high in some places against those barriers.

lava came up just short of the ponds, farm and ocean....rebuilding the road there should not be too hard....the other road and power lines will be a challenge, that I'm sure they will figure out...

Thank you for the incredible footage and for all of your hard work. It is even more powerful to see the images without narration. It’s a stunning videography!

Friends of mine are visiting Iceland for the last week in June. I am so envious. It will be their first ever trip to Iceland. I think they will love it. Maybe they will get a distant view of an erupting volcano! But they are very keen all-weather botanists and birders so will have plenty to keep them occupied if it is all quiet on the volcano front.

A huge tourist magnet later on if city survives until the volcano is done.

IMO, they should put up another barrier just down that road at 0:24. There is a narrow path on that road between the two barriers. If lava reaches down there again, it could crawl down that narrow pathway on the road and seep into town. Even if the chances of the lava getting down that far are slim, better to be safe than sorry just in case there is another eruption that has lava flowing in that direction.

I love it!! A bit of a zoom in here and there would be nice. Wonderful video. Well, we made it to the end of another week. They are flying by so quickly. Enjoy yours my dear. Stay safe.
