The barn door hunk of junk Magnum ( 🤮 ) that the great Richard Petty was burdened with in 78, was the end of the line for the Mopar people for a couple decade's, until they returned with Ray Evernham & Bill Elliott.
Just watching these old races. Man, the cars looked so much faster back then compared to today's NASCAR. They were all over the track. Raw speed. The commentators were always shouting because of how loud everything was. Look at today. I guess it's just the certain camera angles that make the cars look like they are all going the same speed. LOTS of drafting. None of that uncut no restrictor plate racing of the day.
They were racing back then rather than dancing round and playing corporate games. Dale Junior is mild compared to his father but knew all of these guys when young. DE was plain badass back then, became the face of NASCAR Winston Cup and was the reason the sport grew wildly that decade.
Actually, these (big body) race cars were no faster than the cars of today. Today’s stock cars average the same Daytona 500 pole position speeds as these cars, but do it with restrictor plates and more mass. It was back in the mid 80’s when things went gonzo. The cars got smaller and the average speeds increased to around 205 MPH until the plates were introduced in the late 80’s and slowed everything down to the same speeds of the big cars of the 70’s.
