Dad was issued one like this when he was in the army. For years I thought it was his personal knife. Then one day I never saw it again. He eventually found one in a surplus sale and bought it.
Got a Buck Phrobis III in 1989 while in the Marines. I paid $150 back in the day because you couldn't find them in the inventory. It is a great knife for its intended purpose. I cut alot of bobwire, time fuse, det cord, and wire for communication. Two problems with my knife. One was with the sheath with rivets breaking. A quick fix with some 5/50 cord made a stronger repair than the original rivets. The second was the sharpening stone cracked after about 8-9 years of field use. I never babied the knife and it stood up to alot of hard use.
You dont sound enthusiastic about this knife?? This is an awesome knife!! I was issued one and before being sent over before the first Desert Storm, I went to the px and purchased a second. STILL have both!
This is the M9 Phrobis bayonet which was first issued to troops in 1987. You're thinking of the Lan-Cay M9 bayonet which came out in 1992. The LanCay did not have the lightning cut or the pouch on the scabbard.
Both the Phrobis M9 and the German KCB-77 did win the 1986 U.S. Army XM9 trials. The reason why Phrobis won the contract was simply because it was a more modern looking design and most importantly it was a domestic design. The KCB-77 did get adopted by other NATO countries like Germany, Spain, U.K. and Israel though. On a different note Phrobis also submitted another prototype during the trials, it was called PXM9. Instead of having a wire cutting lug on sheath it had a dedicated external wire-cutter attached to the sheath. It was rejected due to its weight.
Of course it's necessary. This knife is one BAD MOTHER ! Use a sharpening rod for a great edge. This thing fits on my Mossberg 590 shotgun. If it passed US Military testing, that's good enough for me.
The price of freedom is not cheap. The Phrobis is be far the best Bayonet of modern time. Our military deserves the best equipment we can provide. Has many more options than the M-7.
As said above you're thinking of the LanCays which were introduced in '92. Also, All M9 Bayonets with the exception of 350 special USMC trial M9 bayonets are two piece with a tang rod including all Phrobis/Buck, LanCay and Ontario M9 Bayonets
I have the German/ Dutch KCB-70 that supposedly will work with the ar15 and the m16 and were I believe developed sometime in the 70's that have the similar blade with cutter, in fact the kbc stands for knife cutter bayonet, it has a screw driver and bottle opener and some other stuff, don't know if the quality is the same as the m9 but they say its indestructible. I hve the m9 which is a very nice looking weapon.nice informative video, thanks
They probably wanted a bayonet that could match the AKM Type 2 for overall function. The Spetznas especially use their bayonets for everything...and I mean as a stepping post for climbing walls and trees after it was hammered into a wall or tree, for example. the American M7 was only a knife.
i just bought an m9 for my buddy's birthday. We play CS:GO and that is a special knife in the game. I might paint it to look more like one of the in game knives
Current manufactured one on Amazon, Midway, SMKW or Blade HQ. eBay of course but be wary of fakes. The current contractors are Ontario Knife Company and Tri-Technologies. Former manufacturers were Lan-Cay and Buck (for Phrobis III). Lan-Cay had General Cutlery as a subcontractor for a short time. Buck/Phrobis can be expensive and are more collectibles. OKC seam to be the easiest to find and go from about $100 to $150.
the saw is for cutting metal like pipe or chain that's why the saw teeth are so small large teeth like on a Rambo knife would only cut wood but with this saw you can cut wood or metal
I like the knife but it’s not full tang. The one I had in the Canadian army was bad. It was always dull everyday and required a tune up more often than not.
I'm speaking only by opinion I see a lot of reviews saying this knife is not so sturdy as a working survival tool ie chopping wood cutting with wire cutting added accessories well bayonet may have kinda threw in the saw and wire cutting as a last ditch optional use but in the old days when bayonets were used in war trench fighting common hand to hand combat was happening still basically this is very sturdy when used as intended to do damage to the attacker when ammo fired or when the distance was so close to a attacker that a jab to the gut or throat proved effective over and over

If Phrobis is so good then why has the military switched and has been using the OKC 3S for a long time now?? They have eliminated the wire cutting ability on the Bayonet because they simply just do not use it so there is no need for it, plus the military has a contract with Gerber multitools which can cut wire if need be. EVERY Marine I talk to will trust their life with the OKC 3S and NO other!!!
Thats not how the wire cutter works... You use the backside of the front edge not the serrations. The serrations are for cutting small limbs for firewood...
My dad used one these in service. Supposedly these can cut through constantine wire, and he found out whoever said that was full of shit because the blade was getting a deformed mark on it
Is anyone familiar with this bayonet I just bought it has a 3.5 inch handle here is the markings U.S. M9 BAYONET 06MA8 TRI-TECH USA 7" SAWBACK BLADE W/WIRE CUTTER UNUSUAL 3.5" HANDLE
That comment is sarcastic, and even if it wasn't, I wasn't stating that the knife wasn't inspired by the game, so I don't know where you're getting that from.
i didnt mean it as i got the idea of commenting "this knife isnt inspired by CS:GO" from your comment. i mean it as i got the idea of saying it from the part "CS:GO refersnce" on your comment and some future replies might think ur a csgo fan.
Sorry to dissapoint you but you dont have a true GI m9. You have a commercial market reproduction. The mil spec m9s dont come with the lightning cut on the side of the blade and dont include the pouch over the sheath. The blade you have is also a two piece. if you remove the handle you can take the tang off the blade.
The early Phrobis M9s made by Buck had the groove and and the the pouch over the sheath. The later ones made by LanCay did not. I work for the Defense Logistics Agency and I have seen M9s just like his in the DoD inventory.
I like better the M7, the M7 proven in combat is one of the best stabbing tools, amazing and heat treated steel, real fixed blade. I can tell you the M7 is fast and extremely effective is a fighting knife.
