I’m pretty sure Solar Paste is just a white acrylic paste with interference mica that reflects a white pearlescent shimmer or a color depending on how light hits the surface you apply it too. Cannot say for sure because mine hasn’t arrived yet.
For the most part I prefer paste and gels without colorants or additives. But this is a cost saving measure for the most part. Paste and gels have a shelf life and I don’t tend to use colored stuff often enough to prevent them from going bad.
I also like the reliability that comes from using one brand. I love Golden. Have for the longest time and when mixed media blew up in the paper crafting world, I had my doubts that crafting companies would do well with texture pastes. For the most part I was right.
But Ranger makes pretty decent stuff. I’ve enjoyed using Lunar Paste and Tim Holtz’s pastes and gels. I haven’t had any technical failures yet either.
Golden pastes and gels costs a few dollars more for the small sizes but if you buy in larger quantities, it’s actually more affordable. But you have to be sure you’ll get through it in a couple of years, otherwise they harden.
I have two tips for prolonging the shelf life of pastes. First is protect it from air. Most artists use Glad’s Press’nSeal for this. Make sure it actually touches the paste in order to seal out the most air. Second tip is to lubricate the threads of your jars. This lets you get a tighter seal while also preventing your jars from being sealed shut. I use Vaseline.
Another useful tip is that Vaseline and oil resist acrylic paint. You can actually use Vaseline as a resist while painting. But this also means you can use Vaseline to help get dried acrylic pastes and paint off your stencils.
Crafters claim that allowing pastes to dry on your stencils ruins them, but it’s not true. I’ve removed glitter gel 18+ months after allowing it to harden on a large stencil that I didn’t have an appropriate sized dish for.
You don’t have to worry so much about stencils and acrylic pastes. For the most part, I do what Justine does and I have a basin of soapy water handy to place stencils in when I’m finished. I use Murphy’s Oil soap because I like the smell and the oil helps to soften acrylic pastes and paint. When I want to remove layers of paint off my stencils, I typically leave them soaking in a tub of Murphy’s Oil soap and water. Paint comes off easily.

It's so fun to watch someone playing with new toys and sharing experiences. Great idea with the soapy pan for soaking stencils!
When I made a mistake with my stencil and lunar paste the other day, I immediately smeared the paste all over the card with my finger and set it aside. The next morning I had a piece of shimmery cardstock for die cutting!

I'm not usually much for subtle, either, but I do like that the subtlety allows for, as Simon pointed out, non-distracting backgrounds that still have some shine. I don't think the subtle uses for this paste are something I'm likely to use much as *focal points* for cards, but I do like that option for backgrounds.

Hi Justine! Great video! Are you aware that if you soak your stencils over night in a tub of Murphy's Oil Soap and water mixture, you will be able to use your stencil buddy to scrap off anything that was dried on them -- pastes, acrylics, etc.
