Dude, I drooled over this card back in the day when all I had was a 8400GS with like 256MB of VRAM lol. This card and the 4870X2 were some of the cards that I really wanted back then.
Thanks, great review, I love old hardware, I also have one ordered from the bazaar and I'll try to get an AMD Radeon HD 6970 at the auction, I hope I won't lose too much money :D
REALLY NICE VIDEO GREAT REVIEW AND POST! My buddy got the 4870 x 2 What a great card for it's time.... I was BLOWEN AWAY AND SUPER impressed but the power it took and heat was a bit much ! But very Impressive game play!!! I was shocked what it could handle!! BUT I GOT THE ATI ORIGINAL HD 5970 !!!!!! THIS CARD WAS UNTOUCHABLE ON MY AMD 8 core 8150 SYSTEM! i FLEW IN EVERYGAME... STILL HAVE THE CARD IN A NEW RYZEN SYSTEM... I PLAY ALL MY OLD GAMES STILL... BATTLEFIELD 2 - MODERWARFAIR 2 HALFLIFE SO MANY OTHERS SO HAPPY WITH THAT INSANE PIRCHASE BACK THEN. SO I BUILT A SYSTEM JUST FOR THIS CARD TO BE REBORN AND STILL FUNCTIONING INSTEAD OF IN A CLOSET LOL LOVE !!!! REVIEWS!!! GOOD JOB!!
This card formed the backbone of my gaming system for 8 years. And it wasn't the performance that made me replace it, but that newer games didn't support it anymore (Dirt Rally, Dragon Age Inquisition). I'm not surprised it holds up well even today on less demanding games. Been using a 1070 now for 6 years and I think it will remain useful even longer; at 1080p, if you are not concerned with ray tracing and getting the max out of everything graphics cards enjoy much longer useful life cycle than 20 years ago. I used to upgrade every 2-3 years just to keep being able to play the latest games. Perhaps this is a side benefit of consoles being more leading in game development; their hardware is static for 6-7 years so programmers can't rely on new faster hardware hitting the market every year.
Thank you for sharing, you made a really good point RE Consoles...HD 4870 was big leap forwards in my view, can not help but to call one of my fav old school AMD GPU's. I'm looking forward to testing the ATI FirePro V8750 soon - always wondered if the 1GB of VRAM was enough :)
I still have mine in a box somewhere - 1GB. It shredded GT Legends racing Sim back in the day. Needs a shroud but still works. Had a look at it now - that heat sink and fins are massive by todays standards. Will keep it and try it on a retro build one day. GT Legends is still around the next fast corner.
Same here. I still have two I cross fired . rFactor , GT Legends and GTR 2 were my choice. Retiring soon so I will do the same. Plenty of time to piece one together with all my spare parts.
Is it compatible with Windows XP? I was thinking of getting it for the Sony VAIO PCV-A41L because it originally came with a ATI graphics card and someone who used to have it replaced it with a nVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT.
I bought a 4870 used when the 5870 came out but broke it right away when trying to put an aftermarket cooler on it. I had done that before a few times with no problem but have not since. Part because the broken card and part because aftermarket coolers are not as necessary or as good anymore.
@@nexus_tech I am pretty sure I tightened the cooler too hard and cracked something. Artic Cooling was the one I used to use yes. My first one was Radeon 9800 pro. I think I had one on a X1950pro too but I’m not sure.
Hi roasthunter, do you mean to control clocks & fan speed or for OSD monitoring ? Check RivaTuner app detection level, sometimes just Alt-Tabbing kicks it on
I dont know what ATi/AMD thought back then when they released the 512MB version when nvidia had their GTX 260 at 896MB. Still, the hd 4870 beat the 260 in many tests. But the 512 didnt age well AT ALL. The 1GB model was released couple of months too late i think. The hd 4890 was not far away of its release. The 1GB should have been the only model imho.
Agreed! In some older games, there is no difference between the 512MB and 1GB card, but as soon as you try newer games, it's really not all that great! I own a 4890 too however it has developed a fault - else it would be on the bench instead of the 4870 :)
@@nexus_tech even crysis and company of heroes to name a few, use well over 512mb when running on high settings. I've seen CoH use around 750+mb on my 8800 GTX. And that game is from 2006 :P
I'm pretty impressed with how well this graphics card holds up for being over 13 years old, especially in the GTA 5 benchmark!
GTA5 is 11 years old now. :D

Heh! Those days of Arctic Accelero aftermaket kits are over...did you ever find out what went wrong with the card ?

I like this card and they are soooo cheap! :)

Thanks for sharing :)
wait how do you get the fan to spin without the card plugged up?
Just wired up a 9V battery using some putty :)

I've got a 512MB version, it plays Far Cry 3 at 720p very well. I couldn't get Afterburner to work on it, any tips?

@@nexus_tech i could get it to show anything and osd options were grey for fps
@@roasthunter Thats strange 🤔. What version of Afterburner are you using ?
@@nexus_tech I think it has something to do with directX as I get a directX12 can't be hooked error in rivatuner. I downloaded the latest
I got it working reinstall graphics drivers then install afterburner.
which thermal pad thickness do I need?
I just got one in an old pc a family member was throughing out but the motherboard died
Nice one :) Are you keeping it ?
Tenho uma dessa. Na caixa lacrada
