      As an old fan of atla (i don't dare to call myself as a hardcore fan). I can't argue why the owl spirit was in season 1. Maybe, just maybe they was just teasing us and will show it too in season 2 because the owl was part of one of the important stories in season 2. So it's impossible to remove it from the story . So I'll save this argument and the doubt until season 2 comes out.
      And for now, let's just enjoy the creativity of the way they present the live action

      Hey guys, I would LOVE to see you react to Invincible in the future after you get some of these shows finished. It’s an amazing animated series, with some slight similarities to Amazon Prime’s other series “The Boys”. Intense violence with heroes and villains, and well, something I won’t spoil. It’s pretty short, only 16 episodes once the entirety of season 2 comes out. And real stakes! They aren’t scared to kill off characters.

      @@almaicardi I would want them to have the soul of the song I wouldn’t like them, taking a song about being a strong woman, and making it about being a pathetic, hang along.
      Which is what this live action does.
      The cartoon had women who were angry and mad, who broke boundaries, who stood up for themselves, who made noise in the world
      The live action has the girls be quiet meak shy, needing to find the voice only really speaking when it comes to helping the man’s feel better.

Without Team Ehasz pulling their weight, Bryke had more creative control, making their not-quite-as-satisfactory writing skills more apparent."

    See, I love how they changed Koh's "trap" here. It made sense for his type of spirit. Instead of faces showing emotions, Koh tapped directly on the prey's actual emotions through hallucinations and painful memories.
    That's why he said Aang was someone who can't be affected by his trap, bec he said "it isn't real" right away (like Tris in Divergent).
    It's also a smart move bec it's a chance to show us viewers the pain these characters were holding in, at the same time. More like hitting two birds with one stone.

    Oh man, this may be the first time that I respectfully disagree almost entirely with the post reaction discussion. It is like Gyatso said "let go of the past, or [you'll] never have a future."
    I think too many read just the headline about these 'creative differences' during production and the narrative for this /adaptation/ was cursed before we even got a proper trailer. We were set up to speculate and be disappointed so when the show finally came out many were almost already conditioned to pick it apart. Will the animation always be the 'best' way to consume this content? Arguably, absolutely (best being subjective of course) but does that mean that this live action /adaptation/ has to be hated because it is not a 1 for 1? Like many other comments have said, we all need to put that narrative to rest because whatever the dispute was we are all not privy to and there does not appear to be any further bad will anywhere with blog posts deleted and so on.
    Of course, if this version of the story (in which they are pulling from various seasons of Avatar as well as from Korra AND the additional comic book materials) is not resonating with you then that is totally understandable. I have some maaaaaaaaajor gripes with the writing of the show for Team Avatar in particular and just do not feel compelled to care about their story at all...whereas with Zuko and Iroh I feel like I am counting down the seconds and milliseconds before they come back on screen. I think what makes this difference from the One Piece adaptation is tone and I think that is where the divide among viewers is coming from. With One Piece, from my understanding, is captures the tone and mood of the anime so it is easier for the original fans to digest the changes because it still feels like One Piece. With this version, the tone is so different from its animated counterpart and that takes a lot for people to adjust to and then throw in all the other additional changes that, sincerely, do fit this new tone and perspective on the story but are big departures from the story that people grew up adoring and how that version made them feel.
    I will say though that episode 4 started to lose me and I found myself drifting more out of it along with Oak on my own personal journey - though not because I wished I had a 1 for 1 retelling but rather the writing for Team Avatar is just...not strong (though I did love adding in the fog and Katara and Sokka getting their backstory moments to parallel how we had Aang's in the first episode and we could somewhat see how they may trauma bond a bit). The part of the episode that actually brought me back in was when Gyatso tells Aang it wasn't his fault and offers those words of validation that he had been so desperate for - until then I was waxing and waning with interest.
    HOWEVER....episode 6 and through to the conclusion kept me in it and left me feeling fulfilled for the most part.
    But woof does the show need to trust its audience more and offer less exposition.

    This is my honest raw opinion. I love the animated series but I am thankful that they didn't did the story exactly as it goes on the cartoon. I mean, the story is the same, I mean the plot, but we are experimented a different way to get to the same point. I like not knowing exactly what is going to happen next or see how the writers deal to solve the script for certain important events on the show. They did an amazing show, many things make more sense to me in the live action and I am here for the next seasons.

  • @_quintessence
    @_quintessence 6 месяцев назад +53

    No offence to Oak because literally everyone mentioned this and I've said this to other people but I think we all need to give this whole "OG creators left the production" topic a rest now. Not only do the original creators (Mike and Bryan, A.K.A Bryke) have writing credits on both episode 1 AND 6, their studio Avatar Studios was the one feeding the Netflix production the newer canon info they wanted added into this show. One of them attended the premiere and enjoyed himself, taking down a blog he wrote after they left the Netflix show, which shows he no longer has any negative feelings towards this production and likes it. Showrunner Albert Kim was also working on this show from Day One and got to work closely with Bryke and has said he talked with them extensively about their vision for this live action, so if anyone deserved to run this show after they left it was 100% him. They left it in the best hands possible.
    Not to mention, the OG creators were involved in the awful 2010 version! Granted they said (after it came out and everyone hated it) they didn't get to do what they wanted, but they still got to make some of their own decisions on that movie. For example, one of the main things everyone hated was the ridiculous change made so that firebenders could only firebend when there was a physical fire nearby which just made 0 sense and would've ruined the whole story since all you had to do was put the fires out and the fire nation was done lol. Guess what? Bryke were the ones who wrote that change in. So how are we so sure that their version of a live action actually would've been good or better than this one?
    Also, the episodes they did write or co-write for this version are still being nitpicked and criticized by fans! Yes, we don't know which parts they wrote and which parts the co-writer did but even episode 6 which for the most part people have absolutely LOVED, has things in it that upset fans.

    • @_quintessence
      @_quintessence 6 месяцев назад +18

      Also about the "line for line" bit, I know some people would enjoy that but for me and a lot of other people; that's just not what we wanted from this adaptation. If you just want to remake the show 1-for-1, then sorry but what's the point? If i wanted to watch the original show then i'd watch the original show. The point of an adaptation is that it recreates the show in a new light, with different info taken from other pieces of media i.e the comics, korra & the novels, and just overall retells that same story but in a new way for live action. The same way Marvel, DC and even Percy Jackson are doing it. Personally, I also see it as a little disrespectful to the original animation; almost as if you're saying "well ok i loved this cartoon, but wouldn't it just be BETTER if it was real people?" like you believe animation is inferior to live action. And i know that's the issue a lot of people had when this show was announced, they didn't think it needed to be made bc the cartoon was perfectly fine and a lot of people don't believe Everything needs a live action remake.

    I understand not having a 1:1 live action, and for most of the changes I do like! I only have problems when the essence of a character gets changed especially in a negative way. For example, Sokka’s dad would never ever say something so horrible about his son. He can be critical and give Sokka a more instructive lesson about how dangerous it can be, but to have no faith in Sokka is against why we love Hakota’s design in the cartoon.
    I get that this is supposed to give an explanation why Sokka was obsessed with leading and making the calls, but if his dad really had so little faith, he wouldn’t have left Sokka in charge and because we saw the village we know in the live action there were other males that were just as old so that means his dad assigned him specifically to be in charge thus creating an inconsistency.
    Again, plot changes are totally fun and creates newer experiences but changing a character’s personality (especially someone who shaped Sokka’s life and whose personality is why the two of them connect through humor and trust) should have been left alone.

There are some changes they made here for time but also because certain things just wouldn't translate as well to live action. Look at Boomi- they seemed to try to make him look and act like his animated version and it came across as cheesy and distracting. the thing I didn't like about this episode and the following was that there wasn't any closure for the spirit of the forest, the bear/big black and white creature, like there was in the animated series. It's just lost in the shuffle of episode content used to make this story arc. I liked the netflix live action but I felt they were trying to shove too many side plots into single episodes and kept losing the point of those plots in the process. Also, Sokka and Katara never were in the spirit world in the animated show. My other pet peeve is how Aang can only talk to his past lives while at their specific shrine/at their statue. That's just stupid.

  • @bananies12
    @bananies12 6 месяцев назад +49

    I don't necessarily disagree with Oak on some of his points, but I actually don't think it's as easy as making everything shot for shot from cartoon to live action. There were extended fight scenes in the animated, which they would not have the budget for in this and some scenes that would work better in the cartoon vs real people acting them out. PLUS these actors and actresses are already being heavily compared to the animated versions and imagine if they had them say ALL of the exact lines. People are being so critical of this already that they would say things like, "Oh Aang's voice actor said that line with a little more emotion than Gordon did," or "Oh Dante Basco gave a better delivery on that exact line." The amount of comparisons would be even worse.
    I will agree that I felt like they threw in Wan Shi Tong (the owl) as fan service just in case they didn't get a season 2 (same with the minstrels from the last episode), but I don't mind seeing Azula or Ozai early at all. Ozai needed more depth vs being a one dimensional villian (plus watching Daniel Dae Kim slay the role is a treat), and Azula I feel as though they're setting her up to be a more tragic character. In this version, she seems to have a better relationship with her friends and I think we're going to watch her become more cold, detached, and psycho as she grows more power hungry and push them away. It will be sad when she gets betrayed by them and eventually is defeated, because we watched her slowly get swallowed by her own pride and greed with no way to save her.

To me, runtime means nothing when not everything can translate perfectly with budget and two different mediums. We did learn that Kya, Katara and Sokka’s mom, sacrificed herself to protect Katara in the original series. When Katara and Zuko seek out the Fire Nation Lt. that killed her mother in order to get revenge, they find him retired, miserable and living with his mother. They ambush him on the road back from the market, and Katara threatens to eviscerate him with weaponized raindrops. She forces him to remember her but spares his life. The sequence was intense and really cool.
    Sokka’s ice trials were reimagined for this series, but he gets to do them successfully with the squad when Bato is rehabilitating in the animated series.

    i was 12 when the original aired and have been a fan ever since. i've rewatched both atla and korra countless times. and i think they made a lot of little changes that were actually quite good! but the oak is mostly right. they should've kept most of it almost exact. and i think if they wanted to change some things around to make it a bit different, they needed better writing. less exposition, less repetition, less tell, more show. there's a clunkiness to it that the original writing never had-- in fact the original had every beat timed perfectly, including humour. this needed more space for those changes to work properly-- another ep or 2 could've gone a long way with that. they changed some of the fundamental aspects of the characters and storyline and made it less impactful, and it's partly because the confines of it being a kid's cartoon and because the original is just so tight and completely perfect that it's glaringly obvious. it's nickelodeon's masterpiece for a reason. we didn't even need a live-action, but they decided to do it, and should've committed as hard as possible (especially after the mess that was the shymalan movie). and it's extra frustrating because the effects are fantastic, and they've added a lot of little things in that give it a little bonus flair. the actors also did a brilliant job, even if a couple were very strongly let down by writing and direction. if this was a netflix original it would be relatively decent, but when we're very clearly going to be holding it up to the phenomenal original, it pales in comparison because of what they decided to change and how they did it. and yeah, it seems this ep is really where they start to break off significantly, and those of us who were keeping an open mind started to lose interest. overall it's not horrible, but i really hope they make changes for seasons 2 and 3 based on the feedback of criticism fans have made

      Wan Shi Tong can still be at the Library. The spirit realm even in the Animated was never temporal space meaning it takes time to walk from one place to another. Okay, the reason that the original creators left was for many reasons. One of which was creative differences, but a bigger one is that they wanted to do other things. Creative types aren't keen to remake the things they already made, they want to make new things.
    Also, the kids in Jurassic park weren't sets of twins, where did you get that from?

  • @TheFireMonkey
    @TheFireMonkey 6 месяцев назад +27

    I watched the original with my wife when it came out - we just sort of stumbled on it, I don't recall how since Nickelodeon was not something we watched. We loved it from the start. I have watched the series multiple times and I have watched quite a few reaction videos like you guys, so you get kind of a high-lights version. To me, if they had done the live action scene for scene, line for line - what would have been the point? Now I am not happy with every choice they have made, but aside of the fact that being live action makes some changes necessary - like the fact that the whole original series takes place in less than a year in world time, but when you have actors who are between 12 and 20 when they start and it will take at least 3 years and maybe more to produce it all so by the end, your 12 year old is 15 or 16... it doesn't work unless you allow the in world time to also take several years. There are other things that work in animation which don't work so well in live, unless you are having live actors playing a cartoon - which makes the whole feel more cartoon than the actual animated series did. So no matter what, if you are making the show feel "real", there needs to be some changes.
    But beyond that, given how amazing the animated was, if your goal is to just duplicate it then there is no real point. But if the idea is to take the original story concept and re-imagine it - that has some value. The question is, how much? I feel that for the most part they are staying close to the original while being a re-imagined version. Just as there are many versions of Robin Hood all based off of the original story - some stay fairly close, some are almost unrelated because they changed so much. In my experience, many of the ones which stay close to the original, though they are very different from each other, are in fact very good and hold true to the story concept. I feel that is what is happening here. As one of the people involved in this Netflix series said, and I have repeated various places, in musical terms, this is not the song done by a cover band, this is a new arrangement of the song being done is a different style. I don't know if you are familiar with Postmodern Jukebox, but they take modern songs and do them in older styles to create amazing renditions of how a song might have been if it was written in another time. That is, to me, what this is like.
    Oh, and while I was writing this, Oak said something about the original creators leaving over creative differences. I think you have misunderstood what happened, because based on what has been said about it, the original writers wanted to totally re-write the story because they have indicated that doing the same story again is boring - Netflix didn't want as much change from the original. My understanding is they wanted to take the core concept they had before they started writing and use that to start over from scratch - which would leave you with the main characters and the situation as laid out at the start and nothing else.

    Oak, you can't just make the animated series one to one into live action. If they did that, the show would be awful and it would ONLY yield disappointment. The animated show will always be there, this show doesn't replace it. Try to watch the show for what it is and don't expect everything to be a one-for-one copy of the animated show. That wouldn't work.
    When people mention "the original creators left", that doesn't necessarily mean anything. I mean, the original creators were involved with the live action movie but that wasn't great. Also, the two original creators are animators... Being able to tell a fantastic story through animation doesn't mean you are able to tell a fantastic story in live action.
    A lot of (not all) the fanbase of Avatar are unfortunately EXTREMELY closed minded when it comes to something that's even slightly different.. Even The Legend of Korra for example
    Lastly, an Owl showing up in one place of the spirit world doesn't mean it's impossible for it to show up in another place of the spirit world...... I mean, it's the damn spirit world

    About the changes - I do agree with the Oak somewhat. On one hand, I don’t need a line for line shot for shot remake, because then the 20 episodes of content would feel really choppy squished into the 8 episodes. BUT I wish the adaptation was more faithful, at least in terms of just keeping it restricted to things that occurred in season 1 of the cartoon, not pulling so much from season 2/3 and the comics and Korra. I don’t need Wan Shi Tong (the owl) introduced here. And I didn’t need Katara and Sokka to be in the fog of lost souls (from Korra!) which seemed to also pull from the Foggy Swamp episode of season 2. There are more things that got changed in the finale that I didn’t like either but I don’t go into here because of spoilers. I hope when they do the adaptation for season 2, it is MUCH more faithful to the cartoon. I think it is the easiest season to adapt as a linear adventure.

    I think the reason Netflix can't show live action line by line exactly like in animation is because of cost. This is a classic excuse but that's the reality. You might notice that each episode the CGI starts to get better, as they want to spent a lot of money on the final battle.
    Common knowledge in Netflix projects, they put funding limits on each project.
    So, the director, writer and production team tried with their creativity, with limited funds to still bring every important plot in the animation into the live action.
    So that's why in previous episodes, including this episode, the style of their shooting is like killing two birds with one stone.
    So for the best. I can compromise on that.

    Having seen the OG show just once, it far from a bad thing, It keeps the mind more open to this adaptation of the show.
    I have seen to many people that are so die hard for the OG show, they want this to be a play by play of that. And bash every detail that is not exactly done the way it was in the animated series.
    I remember the animated series very well, and also know that in this adaptation they mix up a few things. Or pur some things together from different times in the animated series.
    But what people seem to forget, this was to be one season at first, so they were not sure they had enough time to go into detail.
    I also see it in a way that they had to make this show also for people that never saw the animated series at all. Keeping it open enough that those people will understand the story and what is going on.
    Besides that they do hit certain points, plotlines and little nodds to the animated series which fans will get. Trying to please those fans while not making it difficult to understand for people that not know the details.
    Gives also a plus that for newer people watching this, it might lead more people to ATLA and Koraa, making more fans of the universe.
    i will agree this is not completely perfect but still no where near as bad as some people make it out to be.

    I usually appreciate Oak's insight in a lot of media but this one I have to disagree. There's no point in doing a shot for shot live-action of the cartoon. First, there are things that don't translate well into live-action. Second, it's a comple waste of money (20 episodes means different settings almost every episode = expensive as hell). And third, it's way more interesting to see a retelling of the cartoon. Seeing the Agni Kai between Zuko and Ozai, the Air nomad genocide, Iroh and Ozai speaking to each other, etc... This show has problems, which I personally think can and would probably be fixed for season 2 and 3 if the writers listen to the feedback. But bashings things because they're not exactly like the original cartoon is such a wrong way to look at this media. Imagine Aang in the live-action searching for frogs to cure Katara and Sokka. Trapping Katara and Sokka in the spirit world makes more sense in a live-action. Even if the retelling of the story is bad and they butcher things which I don't think they did (missed a point on a lot of stuff though), the original is still here to be appreciated by all of us.

      I personally wouldn’t mind if this series is as thought of as an introduction, and set-up for the world of Avatar. So in the overall season 1 story arc, I feel as if the characters “evolved” to ones that were, in a way, “closer” to the animated series in at the end. I’m looking forward to season 2 and 3. 😍

    As to just making a one to one remake: EP 1: Sokka bonks Aang with the butt of the spear. That would look ridiculous and slap stick Three Stooges in live action. Secret tunnels: Little baby face Gordon kissing Kiawentiio would be... Yikes. Bumi being bitter makes sense after a hundred years at war, rather than "Messing with people is fun" as his reasoning for the tests. I could go on.

Ppl that understand the quality story telling in the original should have an issue with the obvious textbook mistakes in the live adaption. In the same way m night last air bender was objectively bad not just cuz it was not accurate to source material but bc it had bad writing, casting , acting bad decisions were made. For Azula and Ozai, if you look at it in the show, they don't actually have much screen time at all. I think having snippets of them this early is just to tease us for more screen time in the later seasons. Is it necessary to see them so soon? No. But it isn't such a bad thing to have a little introduction of them before we see them in full swing next season.
    My guess with not being able to follow the cartoon episode by episode, is that if you look through the episodes of the cartoon (especially later in the season) each 'side quest' / episode doesn't happen one after the other. There may be a period of time/days between them where they're just travelling (eg. one episode they're in a water ship, the next at a fire nation festival then at the northern air temple). All the side quests work in the cartoon because they're episodic--and have time for filler scenes/episodes. Combining the episodes from the cartoon together line by line to make a longer episode for the live action wont really work because then it'll feel disjointed and rushed (and would be expensive). Unfortunately 8 episodes also doesn't give us the luxury of all those little moments from the cartoon that helps us learn more about their characters, so the showrunners really had to pick and choose which moments/events to keep--and probably why they decided to bring in people/characters earlier (ie. Jet and the freedom fighters).
    I don't agree with the some of the choices in the live action, but I do understand them and appreciate some of them. I would have preferred that they kept as close to the original sequence of events as possible and I'm not completely sold on some of their creative liberties, but I'm trying to enjoy the show for what it is-- an adaptation not a remake. The LOTR and HP movies took creative liberties from their source material as well. The key to enjoying any adaptation is to watch it without too much of a scrutinising eye and enjoy it as its own thing, because it'll never be a perfect copy of the original source. As long as the characters are relatively like their original (still waiting for a bit more fierceness from Katara, and Azula more manipulative and confident--which will probably happen in the later seasons) and the story is on track, then I can still enjoy it. In saying that, I'm hoping the showrunners hear the opinions of this season, make good choices in what they choose to adapt later on and make sure that season 2 and 3 not stray too far from familiar cartoon everyone knows. At the moment though, this live action is still fun to watch.

    Normally I believe you guys have really good takes and that's why I love watching your reactions, but Oak, you couldn't be more off in what you think you want from this show. Why would you want just a complete remake of the cartoon, when that already exists and is amazing? This needs to be viewed as something that enhances the original work, not to try and be a replacement. It almost feels like an insult to the original work to redo everything one by one. If House of the Dragon was 100% exactly straight from the books, the show would have ended in the first 20 minutes. Just wait until next episode, I think you will start to appreciate the things this show is adding after seeing that. To me, I can reason that the owl still IS at the library, in person, but he's just able to come see Aang in the spirit world, just how Aang is able to move around there even though his body is off meditating still. Yes, it would be nice if this detail was thought about and a line like "Now I must leave to protect my library back in the real world, Aang." to explain 'oh ya, he IS at the library, he's just currently entering the spirit world from there to talk to us here'. And it would have been cool if that's when he could have explained how Aang needs to not change his face when facing Koh. But whatever, again, the cartoon IS still there if I wanna enjoy the exact storylines I like. I think they are still doing a good enough job with this show that I can enjoy it, and it sucks to see you allow it to be ruined by you, and now for The Answer too, because you put up mental blocks about what you want this show to be. Try to appreciate it for what it is. There are flaws, yes, but it still was very enjoyable for me and did add some amazing additions to some characters that enhance the entire IP for me. Just give it a chance and stop being so in your head lol.

  • @Hiett1
    @Hiett1 6 месяцев назад +4

    I will never understand why people want or expect exact copies, 1 for 1. That's stupid you have the original for that if that is what you want go back and watch the OG. l expect an adaption to tell the story in a different way. Live action I expect to be darker and more serious and in that case it can't be 1 to 1 because how do you show the genocide of the air nomads and Aang being a goof ball and penguin surfing in the same episode. The only thing I feel this show forgets is that Aang and friends are still kids so they need to be able to fold in some fun. But it would be out of place to have the pure level of obnoxious silly we get from a Y7 cartoon in a older audiences darker live action. So they over compensated a bit so Aang seems a little flat but over all good adaptation and I would have been disappointed with a copy. I hate remakes that try to be a copy it lacks creativity.

    Tbh I haven’t minded most changes. Like, seeing Wan Shi Tong, a spirit, in the spirit world makes sense to me, and he could still return for season 2.
    A cartoon version & a live action version are such similar forms of media that if both versions were identical, it seems pointless to have both. And yes, then many people say they should have left it alone, but we’re here now & I personally like how they’ve changed it up. It’s not a copy, it’s an adaptation.
    The cartoon had the time and ability to make it larger than life in every way. The live action version is more realistic in terms of letting us feel how much a 100 year long war affects everyone - Katara basically having ptsd affecting her bending, Bumi becoming very jaded, seeing Ozai manipulate his children, etc.

    I just wanted to point out that aside from limited budget, time constraints, especially, regarding the child actors were a major factor why they couldn't make this into a full 20 episodes book season. Unlike LOTR trilogy, you can cover a lot more because the actors are adults and not going to look that much different in couple of years but that is not the same case with the child actors. You can't compare it with Harry Potter either because both the book and movie characters grew older together, whereas, in ATLA, Aang is 12 going on 13 throughout the whole series. The child actors can only work certain amount of hours unlike adults and at the same time, they grow up drastically during their teenage years, as you've also witnessed with HP series. Unless you can freeze the child actor, like Aang was or find another doppelganger, I think what you're asking is not realistic. Overall, I do understand that your want comes from your love of the OG ATLA and I do enjoy your reactions.

    They did Soka really dirty in this episode. In the original, he had never been ice dodging until the episode where they met Bato. In this version, they said Bato had to jump in to save him, and he only passed he only passed due to nepotism. The other warriors in his village mock him, and even his dad says that some people shouldn't be entrusted with the lives of others. This really makes the story much weaker because it doesn't make sense that Soka's dad and the other warriors would leave to fight the Fire Nation and leave Soka in charge after this.

    Sorry, but the idea of a 1:1 transition just doesn't make sense. Why would any storyteller try to copy a story 1:1 if nothing is changed? Anyone who wants to watch the original story can watch the original story. What's the point of making the adaptation in the first place?
    It's also pointless to compare the runtime of live action series with that of a cartoon. Cartoon allows for a much faster storytelling that would never work out the same way in live action. Real humans don't move that fast nor do they talk as fast unless you want them to look absolutely ridiculous.
    And keep in mind, that the original creators were also executive producers on that terrible movie. Not everything they touch turns to gold. Rumour has it that they wanted to change even more, and that Netflix wanted to keep it close to the original. Them leaving doesn't mean the project itself turned out worse for it.

And when you just take everything one to one then there's little room for your own artistic skills. If you aren't the original creators then a one to one recreation is basically plagiarism and takes much less skill from a writing standpoint where as this does allow writers to use their own creativity.

    The problem of doing a one to one episode is that the first season structure makes it impracticable. A bigger episode is still one episode, they can't simply condense multiple places and completely different plots into one episode, cause the pace would feel weard. The last two seasons have much more continued storylines, but season one of the cartoon has this "enemy of the week " vibe. That being said, I understand not doing a one to one adaptation, but some changes do feel unnecessary.

    Whether taking the liberties they did is good or not for the adaptation, what I will say is that copying the first season line for line never would have worked. They're taking 20 episodes and putting them into 8 longer ones. You can't 1-for-1 that without having some extremely weird cuts between where the original episodes ended and began and having themes for each episode be all over the place.
    The adaptation could've been closer to the source material, but it would've been abysmal if they tried to rehash the story line for line, scene for scene.

    Love the reactions, and I appreciate the honesty. At the same time I'm afraid I just don't agree with Oak's perspective here (for once). In my opinion the hardest part of these adaptations is that the entire fanbase is so completely split on what they actually want, which means there will likely never be a way to please a majority of the fans. There will always be people that take offense to any additional content created, simply because they glorify the original so much. There are people that wanted a 1 to 1 exact translation, which imo would have been pointless. We've seen how those tend to be received by fans, which is badly (ex: The Lion King). If you want to watch the original, just watch the original.
    When people are so hostile toward current attempts to make new content, which was made to give fans *more* of a beloved universe, it ends up shooting down future attempts and creative opportunities. Then when people whine about 'I wish we had more time in this world' it rings hollow, because nothing new will ever be good enough for them anyway. This was clearly created by people doing their best to respect what came before. There are improvements that can be made, because this adaptation obviously wasn't perfect. At the same time, let's not pretend season one of the original didn't have its own flaws. I look forward to see what upcoming seasons bring to the table, and hopefully they can shore up at least some of the weaknesses of the live action. 💙
