Was a freshman in high school. Was at target clothes shopping with my mom & we were browsing around a bit. While we were checking out the electronic section, i noticed this album "The War Within". Didn't know Shadows Fall from the man on the moon but i didn't pick up the album at first but as we went around the store it kept coming back to mind. Finally at checkout i asked my mom if i could get one more thing n she said yes so i went back to the CDs n picked up the album. Soon as i got home n jammed this i was grateful i picked it up n thankful my mom bought it for me. One of the greatest blindgrabs in my CD collection

The War Within is underrated. It's such a nice record.

I believe it won metal album of the year and beat lamb of god's album ashes of the wake that year. So I wouldn't say underrated.
@@Log821 I was about to say the same, pretty sure this album and The Art Of Balance are considered the band's peak and this was one of a few years that was the peak of the 2000s in metal

This was one of my favorite bands in high school. I haven't seen them since 2005. I'm seeing them next Thursday, and it feels so goddamn good to be back into this band again.

They didn't break up, they went on hiatus but have played a couple of reunion shows since 2021

maaaan i miss the era between 1999 and 2006, this song brings so much memories, i used to go to a friend house smoke weed and jam this song on full volume, i will always associate this song to him, he died in 2014..... RIP André Gil

To each their own. It's more about the lyrics and philosophy for me. Great heavy metal in my humble opinion.
It isn't mainstream, at least not in the minds of the culturally brainwashed.
Now me, I listen to this kind of music all day.
It would a lot of nudging and bribing to get me to even bother to listen to any 'popular', Top40 garbage; even more bribing if it is dubstep nonsense.
Because the group buried themselves. The War Within is so solidly complete, their B-release album "Fallout from the War" shows they had a lot of inspiration and pruned songs that weren't quite up to snuff. I highly doubt Threads or especially Retribution had so many B-songs. Fire From the Sky was ok but it felt like a sophomore album where the band is still searching for a sound.
Seeing Devildriver, Lamb of God, Machinehead, Killswitch, etc. you can see why those bands continued growing. They started at roughly the same periods with roughly the same musical experience around the bandmates, and yet their sequential albums have tangible growth and progress. Shadows Fall never had this and instead really dragged into the 2010s. I don't blame them for calling it quits when they did, hopefully they come back and really hone in on this song and The War Within as a whole to figure out that great, powerful sound we all want.
