One of the best fin rot videos I've seen! I've had a betta battling stubborn fin rot for a while now, and here are some helpful tips and knowledge on top of the info in this video that helped me tremendously: 1. Clean water and quarium salt will cure 95% of fin rot cases. Medicating your tank/fish should only be used as a last/emergency resort. Adding meds when not necessary can cause the bacteria to become resistant to meds, making them very ineffective when you may actually need them. 2. Aquarium salt is only necessary until the active fin rot has stopped. Once the fins are recovering, no need to continue adding salt. Clean water is all you need at this point. 3. Don't add salt for more than 9-10 days in a row! It will start damaging the betta's organs after that. Rest period of 1-2 weeks between treatments in recommended. Also, the salt does not evaporate or get processed out. Whatever you put in, stays in until taken out with a water change. 4. Clean water! I cannot stress this enough. Bad water quality (ammonia and nitrites) cause fin rot most of the time. I've heard this before, and have confirmed it with my own betta. I used to think he was snagging or physically ripping his fins, but bad water quality was dissolving his delicate fins, allowing the bacteria mentioned in the video to take hold. Do large daily water changes (80-100%, like suggested in the video), and I recommend keeping careful records of the water parameters during the whole treatment period. Doing so helped explain why my betta's fins could go from solid regrowth to completely wrecked overnight. API makes great ammonia and nitrite (as well as other) test kits. 5. Fin rot can irritate your betta, causing him/her to bite off parts of their tail. Tail biting causes open wounds, which causes fin rot. Fin rot causes tattering, ragged edges, and bloody/red or dead/black tips. Biting looks like a clean cut crescent shaped chunk missing. 6. Be very patient! It's totally normal to have multiple relapses during healing. The clear tissue growing back is about as delicate as wet tissue paper, and is VERY sensitive to bad water quality. Relapsing is frustrating, but once you get your water quality under control, your fish will recover! I've learned a lot about fin rot over the past few months (unfortunately), but I hope this info can help some of you address it quickly and effectively. Thanks for reading!
hi, you sound very knowledgeable on fishies and my betta has a pretty bad case. I’m gonna use a 5 gallon quarantine tank but I was wondering what your opinion is on the dosage. the fin rot isn’t really a mild case I would say it’s pretty bad so I’m wondering if I should do two tsps of salt instead of one. what do you recommend? also for the quarantine tank do I do the changing out of the water everyday I’m doing the salt?
@@FoolishFay I wouldn’t go too heavy on the salt. Just the appropriate dosage (should say on the packaging of your aquarium salt) should do the trick (or even lighter than recommended). Any salt water is helpful - after a certain point, I think less is more. It doesn’t take much aquarium salt to produce good results. And yes, certainly! I’d recommend changing out most of the water once a day. Clean water is key here, and even slightly salted water will get dirty. Just try not to change more than once a day, or change in a way that will put too much stress on your fish. Stress is a very big factor in the health and healing of fish
@@FoolishFay Best of luck! Bettas are resilient. Just keep the water clean and lightly salt with aquarium salt, and you should see good results within a few days. Feel free to reach out anytime
Is it safe for them to be kept in salt in their quarantine tank? Someone told me that I should only give them salt baths but the fin rot on her is pretty bad and she doesn’t have an appetite anymore. I was thinking of adding the salt into the tank because I don’t think the baths are doing anything.

ME TOO! I did a lot of research as well! Mine is in a 5-gallon fluval chi, kept at 79 degrees. I got him today and now i noticed he has fin rot! No one even examined the fish or asked me about the care at the petsmart. I wish i had a better store to buy from, but there are no good aquarium stores close enough to me.
Excellent information on fin rot. Jeff is gorgeous and it's good to see the fins growing back. The damage looks more like fin biting than fin rot. It's a common problem in bettas with large fins.

I am so grateful for this video. It literally saved me! My neighbor got a 10g fish tank for her shop a while back and put two bettas in it with a divider between them and she realized they were hard to take care of and gave them to me. The living conditions were terrible. Thankfully there was no ammonia or nitrites, but there was enough algae for a koi pond I swear. There were only a few moss balls on the ground and the filters (yes there were two) in there were too big and strong. The two betta fish had fin rot and I was distraught. Ty so so so much. You are a lifesaver. I can’t explain how happy I was to find this video, as silly as that sounds
So glad Jeff is doing better and it's so great that you are taking care of him so well! I would like to just give a bit of caution about Bettafix and Melafix. The oils in these antiseptics have been known to damage a betta ' s labyrinth organ which allows them to breathe air from the surface. Of course they are okay in small quantities and if doing proper water changes but over a long period of use they can be damaging. So just trying to give a helpful tip to everyone :). Love Jeff and love these new betta vids!
Chiara Dreher yes I read that betta fix is not good. I bought a bottle and after reading about it threw the bottle out did not want to take a chance. water changes and IAL are good. Jeff is a pretty fish glad he is getting better!

Poor Jeff! His caudal looks like he may have stress bit/attacked himself and gotten fin rot from there. I know it can be relatively common for long finned Betta living in cramped quarters (and stressful environments) like in the big box stores. I'm glad he's doing better though! Aquarium salt has helped several 'rescue' Bettas that I've had, I love it! If you don't mind the discoloration, Indian Almond Leaves (Cattapa Leaves) are awesome too.
Thanks for the update and answering the question that was in my mind. My daughter's betta had it when we got him, but three months later and he's doing awesome! Jeff will come back around with you helping him now.
my mother once got a comet goldfish with finrot on the tail for my younger brother, and I treated it with a small cosmetic surgery, and a 99% water change. Now I'm not sure if the removal of the affected area had any impact on the infection, but what you said in the video makes me think that the change of environmental factors helped bring the fish back up to health so he could fight the infection.
I got a fish tank for my birthday 5 years ago, and 2 weeks later, I was in the hospital for a week with an Aeromonas bacterial infection. I was 5 months pregnant at the time. It. Is. NOT. FUN. 0/10 do not recommend, but my husband likes teasing me that I got fin-rot. Hope Jeff is MUCH better now!
I see a lot of comments that bettas don’t like strong current but my betta loves to swim thru the bubbles from the filter. It’s funny coz it looks like he’s having fun coz see does it repeatedly.
I have a betta in a bowl with fin rot. Should I use the whole package or just a tenth of a packet of api fin and body cure? I don’t want to overdose and hurt my betta. He has very bad fin and tail rot.
I think you should add information on fin loss. I did some research on fin rot and found that fin loss is often confused for fin rot but they both are completely different.
I can't use salt as much as I'd like to due to all my plants, so I'm trying a combination of maracyn and ich-x. I've got guppies on one tank, a betta in another, and mollies in another. They all have freyed and black discoloration on the fins (probably because I've shared instruments between tanks) and I've used the combo on one tank but just the ich-x on the other two. All are getting a little better, so I'm just doing ich-x but uping the dose by 50%.
I got my betta from Walmart in bad conditions about two months ago. He's living in a clean ten-gallon tank all alone with conditioned water and a good filter and a heater that keeps it around 78, and I do water changes every week or two. When I got him he had a little white on the edges of all of his fins, but now he has even more. He is doing well, eating well, and swimming, but is the white fin rot that is getting worse? I'm concerned for his health, please respond!
Grac The Destroyer It seems that what you have setup for your betta is extremely good but a lot of people who have amazing tanks in terms of environment and water chemistry still get fin rot due to the stress experienced by the betta in the pet store. I have heard that they eat there own tails out of frustration. So this is why I tend to buy from a breeder even if it requires delivery from another country or if I do buy from stores I examine the fishes tail carefully. Always buy from a reputable source whether it may be a breeder or a aquarium store.
Thanks for all the videos! Just got my first betta fish today for the family. Got ours from Walmart and he seems to have a lil bit of fin rot. Got him all set up in his tank and we are super excited for our new pet! We named ours Floki, lol yes like off of Vikings
Would you recommend using beneficial bacteria supplement and cycle it for a few days and add in the fish because i won a betta at a fair and im hoping to keep it alive because its in good shape and it swimming pretty fine and the fins look healthy. But i dont have a tank prepared.
Should I move my Betta to tank from a bowl? What size do you recommend? A lady at the pet store said she moved her betta from a bowl to a tank and he died right away. I love Beasley and don’t want to hurt him.
My betta is getting shredded by fin rot. I feel like he's always stressed but at the same time he's the most active little piggy ever. He's in a 10 gallon tank and it's usually at 76 to 78 with the water heater. (Sometimes it reaches 80) No ammonia or anything in the water. He seems to be getting worse every day. ): What do I do?
@SomethingReallyStrange Same situation here... Sometimes, we do too much and worsen up things. Their immune system was already low, they were already old when we got them, who knows! Bad luck... At least we try...
@SomethingReallyStrange do you have objects in the tank that can be hurting his fins. So it would keep tearing over time . maybe take a bunch of stuff out of the tank. Do the aquarium salt treatment for no more then 10 days . see if you notice tiny regrowth. Maybe doing many things over and over with him is stressing him out more
I’ve bought the tetra heater. Is the light supposed to be on at all times? Red whiles it heated and green once at normal temperature ? Is it normal for the heater to not have a light. I bought a tetra 10-30 gallon heater and need to know if I should return it bc it’s not working or if it’s normal.
My boy was just in a qt for fin rot and he made his first bubble nest for me in the dull qt tank, he never does in his own tank! Haha. Also, salt in that concentration can cause kidney/liver damage so ten days is my max, then a few days break.
I think it's important to mention that the new water also needs to be the same pH and temperature, so when you're doing the water changes, it doesn't stress the fish out further
Question!! I have my betta in a 5gal planted tank right now (setup is perfect, heater filter everything) but the only thing he'll eat is brine shrimp! He will NOT eat pellets, is this okay diet to live on or should I try a different food?
Not sure if you still check comments on your older vids but just in case, I thought I'd try! My betta has a mild case of fin rot so I moved him into a smaller hospital tank (I believe it's 2.5g) but I'm confused about what you did for Jeff. When I transferred him initially, I took half of the water from his old tank and put in new, conditioned water for the remainder. On day 2, I'm supposed to take out half of the water that is currently in his tank and dose it with salt and put it back? Or I'm supposed to get new tap water, condition it, add salt, and then put the NEW water into his tank? Sorry, I had a hard time following what you did for him in the video
I don't have a "hospital tank" but just a 3.5 gallon tank with my betta and a snail. So can I use salt even though he will continue to live in this tank afterwards? He seems healthy otherwise but he seems to be dealing with fin rot.
I need some advice. My betta, Blizzard, currently has fin rot. When doing the 50% water change, do you take out 50% of the tank water and then add it back with half the amount of salt recommenced for a full tank? I'm a little lost.
Have you ever experienced him having his fins looking clumped together and his color looking pale? I've been reading on it and I'm not sure if it's fin rot or ick
Hi, what if your fish has fin rot AND red streaks all over its fins? The redness starts from his body looking a little pinkish, and then looks like blood streaking out through the fin. I've heard its called septicemia and it is due to low water temp as well?
question about Jeff face, the whiteness. Is that his normal color? mine has a similar thing going on and it looks like its not supposed to be that way on my betta. ty
Hello, I'm wondering if Betas can naturally have black tips on fins? I recently bought 3 of the same variety and they seem to have healthy uniform long fins, however on a closer look they do all have a bit of black on the tips of their fins. All of their bodies have black naturally within the pattern of their scales so I'm not sure. Thanks!
Thank you my baby girl just got fin rot. I recently did a water change and the junk at the bottom of the tank resurfaced. That was the cause. I have two females in a ten gallon with a filter and the other female is fine. Likely my girl is recovering now. It's funny cause she is always eager to eat.
I hate to ask. Does then the tail of a Betta can grow? My son (5 yrs of age) got to the Betta and tore part of its tail. I'm so upset with him but more upset I don't know what to do. Do I continue treating the water? Will it grow back? Will it die? I could use the guidance.
I had a beta that was 2 years old when I got him and he had fish rot And we got him because he was gonna die soon because he had horrible and I mean horrible fin rot Yea He lived 2 1/2 years more
I have my betta fish in a 10 gallon tank with two snails and a java fern. However he has lost a lot of his tail and I am quite worried. The water perimeters are perfect, so I do not know what is causing it.
I'm new to betta fish. I breed angel fish and firemouth cichlids. I wanted a tank in my bedroom. These things seem to be more complicated than my other babies. What do you think about methylene blue for disease prevention? Thanks
My beautiful betta Grace has totally lost one of her side fins, she eats sometimes and stays at the bottom of the heated, very clean filtered tank, what can I do for her,is it to late, will it grow back, heeeeelp plz?? 👀😔😪🙏
That is the same thing I am experiencing with my beta but his tail is sticking together and comes to a point. I wish I could give you advice but I am hoping someone will.
Jeff I need your help my double tail fins are so huge that he swims all displayed and he is beautiful, but he must go to his plants to rest. I feel really sorry for him his body is relatively normal but his fins are huge. Should they be trimmed?
What kind of pump was in that tank? I can't get my current to calm down to a healthy flow. I've got a baffle, adjustable setting on low and extra medias. Your lack of current is what I'm trying to do without turning off my filter.
This might sound like simple thing but I don’t know… if we block that spray bar, will it not damage the filter? And how is he gonna get fresh oxygen if that is blocked ?
I use methaline blue and salt. but im gonna do a nice water change in my 75 gallon. Also you can use tea tree oil. It kills the bacteria that causes fin rot.
Just wondering, how large is your tank? I have a three gallon tank that's sorta cycling (and yes I know five gallons is the best size but 2.5 is THE limit) and I'm giving him medications. He also glass surfs a lot but I just think that's because he's still sick
My Betta is black with some blue scales and some blue stripes, he has fun rot too. How can I tell if his fin rot is getting better? I know you mentioned the white tissue. He’s in a hospital 10 gal with a sponge filter.
Can i keep the water change routine for more than 10 days? My betta has severe fin rot, I've tried anitiotics and fin rot medications and have had less luck than water changes with salt (his fins are growing back!). Can 1tsp /gal for extended time be harmful?
My betta (Wally) has very severe fin rot and nothing works... what should i do? Should i heat up the tank? I have been using stress coat and API fin and body cure. I use reverse osmosis water.
I have a beta with what I'm very sure is fin rot. Just a little bit but I don't want it to spread and get worse. My question is that I have 5 live plants and if I want to leave him in his 5.5 gal tank, what would happen to the plants? Should I think about a smaller, less maintenance tank for him until it's gone? Thanks. Your video is very helpful as well.
Great video, I just have one question. So someone I know has a betta fish. I have no idea what happened, he said that he does his water changes and so on, but for some odd reason his betta now has a popped eye and he noticed some fin rot and doesn't know what to do. So my question is how to prevent any infection to the eye and how could that happen? In ANY case whatsoever. And for the fin rot I'll send him the link of this video to see if it helps.
Sadly when I got my betta fish Astro I noticed a few days in there was a small see through hole. It'd been a few months of having him,I thought the hole was nothing. But then I noticed today when watching him eat there was a hole bigger than the one before. What do you reccomend as fin rot medicene?

AQUAPROS i have
Adam Sean dubstep Who taught you english?

If you don't mind the discoloration, Indian Almond Leaves (Cattapa Leaves) are awesome too.
he might have ripped his own fins they do that when their tank is to small or when they are bored.
Tank is too small :(
Rachel Kuhel my tank used to be small until i recently bought a new tank with new lights and a filter and now his beard is popping up :(
feel better soon jeff!

The Hammy Nerd he is saying he hopes he feels better how much of a dumbass can you be to not tell that
MAquatics MHickey ... it's a play on words... feel better... feel Betta. It's a Betta joke.
^
MAquatics MHickey it a joke bumb ass learn to take one
Thanks for the update and answering the question that was in my mind. My daughter's betta had it when we got him, but three months later and he's doing awesome! Jeff will come back around with you helping him now.
What dit you use to treat him?
You helped me save my Betta's life!! Thank you so much
my mother once got a comet goldfish with finrot on the tail for my younger brother, and I treated it with a small cosmetic surgery, and a 99% water change.
Jeff is so cute! FYI: Dragon stone tears fins. Use only salt or IOL to treat. He's doing well so stop treating. He can heal on his own.
Other then the Moss balls what's the plant that you have in the tank. and can you put in under water completely
I have a betta in a bowl with fin rot. Should I use the whole package or just a tenth of a packet of api fin and body cure? I don’t want to overdose and hurt my betta. He has very bad fin and tail rot.
Great video good information u can tell u really care about ur little guy also love the scape of urs tanks x
I think you should add information on fin loss. I did some research on fin rot and found that fin loss is often confused for fin rot but they both are completely different.
I hope he gets better
ryan black betta
what filter did this tank end up with?
Grac The Destroyer the white means there was fin rot and its getting better.
Is it good to give betta a slat barth once in a while? Even tho they are healthy
my betta fish has fin rot and he lives in a 10 gallon tank with no tank mates, can i do the treatments in his tank or do i need to get a smaller tank?
I am so attached to Jeff now. Hope he is doing well.
Jeff is looking good :) Is aquarium salt ok with live plants and moss balls? TYSM :)
My betta is getting shredded by fin rot. I feel like he's always stressed but at the same time he's the most active little piggy ever. He's in a 10 gallon tank and it's usually at 76 to 78 with the water heater. (Sometimes it reaches 80)
No ammonia or anything in the water. He seems to be getting worse every day. ): What do I do?
Wait are we dealing with fish or pigs?
So is it 50% water change everyday with haft of the salt mentioned on the instructions?
That mangrove tank is gonna be dope!
I'm glad I found this channel at least you can produce a nice scape.
Research is so important. I would never rely on the advice from a Petstore.🐟🐠🐟😊
My betta is recovering from a fin infection he had at the pet store, he is doing much much better!
I love Jeff I love him, LIVE LONG AND PROSPER JEFF
Kayte Oleary yes they also like worms
I love betta fish. Too bad they fight among the males. I would love a tank full of bettas.
risquecat *right* ?
Same! I'm too nervous to make a female betta tank too, I don't want to see any fighting.
Tinkachu females can live together :)
@@iqaros637 Ya, but they fight at first for hierarchy. It just makes me very paranoid lol.
Other types of community fish can be with bettas
He seems healthy otherwise but he seems to be dealing with fin rot.
can you show how you properly clean your tank? mine keeps getting severely dirty super fast
I cant get over how much i love your videos!!
I have a betta fish can u give me some advise to take care of him
try the subreddit r/bettafish - it's a wonderful community that's helped me a TON

Hi, what if your fish has fin rot AND red streaks all over its fins? The redness starts from his body looking a little pinkish, and then looks like blood streaking out through the fin. I've heard its called septicemia and it is due to low water temp as well?
Hi, what are those little green balls of stuff in Jeff's tank please?
question about Jeff face, the whiteness. Is that his normal color? mine has a similar thing going on and it looks like its not supposed to be that way on my betta. ty
Hey can u make us a video how to set up an outdoor tank for plants and fish?
Hello, I'm wondering if Betas can naturally have black tips on fins? I recently bought 3 of the same variety and they seem to have healthy uniform long fins, however on a closer look they do all have a bit of black on the tips of their fins. All of their bodies have black naturally within the pattern of their scales so I'm not sure. Thanks!
Thank you for the information. Everyone just said use betta fix. I didn’t understand why he wasn’t getting better
When you do this aquarium salt, do you need to put the water conditioner as well?
The aquarium salt doesn't affect the sword plant or moss balls?
Thank you my baby girl just got fin rot. I recently did a water change and the junk at the bottom of the tank resurfaced. That was the cause. I have two females in a ten gallon with a filter and the other female is fine. Likely my girl is recovering now. It's funny cause she is always eager to eat.
I hate to ask. Does then the tail of a Betta can grow? My son (5 yrs of age) got to the Betta and tore part of its tail. I'm so upset with him but more upset I don't know what to do. Do I continue treating the water? Will it grow back? Will it die? I could use the guidance.
how often would you do a water change on a 6 gallon aquarium that is filtered with a HOB?
I had a beta that was 2 years old when I got him and he had fish rot
And we got him because he was gonna die soon because he had horrible and I mean horrible fin rot
Yea
He lived 2 1/2 years more
👏👏👏
What did you do to treat it?
Kshais i gave him some fin rot meds, And I cut off some of the infection, not all though, it probably hurt him, but I’m glad he lived a long life
After the 10 days of treatment what do you do? Do you have to change all the water, half of it, or just go with your normal water changes?
This was uploaded a while ago, but the rocks in the tank look too harsh for Bettas, fins get torn with them
i have a betta who torn his tail and hasnt been treated for a long time.. is there a hope to have it fixed??
What if you have plants ? Can you still add salt
He looks so happy now swimming around so much! I love his bubble nest too
I have my betta fish in a 10 gallon tank with two snails and a java fern.

And how is he gonna get fresh oxygen if that is blocked ?
if you have a filter in the tank, do you still leave it running while doing the salt treatment?
I use methaline blue and salt. but im gonna do a nice water change in my 75 gallon. Also you can use tea tree oil. It kills the bacteria that causes fin rot.
What about the overall body discolouration especially under the mouth area?
Just wondering, how large is your tank? I have a three gallon tank that's sorta cycling (and yes I know five gallons is the best size but 2.5 is THE limit) and I'm giving him medications. He also glass surfs a lot but I just think that's because he's still sick
6:50 quarantine the fish and treat with salt. Do water changes and follow the instructions
When adding salt bak again, do we add the water conditioner to the new water too? or will it interfere with the salt?
Yes always condition the water!
My Betta is black with some blue scales and some blue stripes, he has fun rot too. How can I tell if his fin rot is getting better? I know you mentioned the white tissue. He’s in a hospital 10 gal with a sponge filter.
Judi Yang if the white tissue keeps growing without braking up, then he’s healing.
Can i keep the water change routine for more than 10 days? My betta has severe fin rot, I've tried anitiotics and fin rot medications and have had less luck than water changes with salt (his fins are growing back!). Can 1tsp /gal for extended time be harmful?
This video was super helpful
What filter are you using for this tank? I feel the one I am using is too much for my betta
Thanks. Your video is very helpful as well.
awesome video man!! hope he gets betta soon!!

Do you have a filter in your betta tank? And what is the % of water yoi chanhe every week? Are you doing a 100% water change monthly?
