What is not commonly known is that most PN junctions are photovoltaic. Now, I think the "inventor" here is a bit confused. A solar cell is made up of a large PN junction and underneath CONNECTED to the thick P-layer is a metal film (I guess he think the CD will do the job, but it has no contact) . On the top surface are small electrodes to connect a thin n-layer. These are the small stripes you see on a solar cell. My guess here is that he thinks the glued wires will do the same thing, but again, it has no contact with the n-layer.
If the n- and p-layer are connected through a circuit when photons collides with the pn-junction, an electron will be "push" and leave a "hole" in the p-layer while this, now free electron, will be attracted to the hole in the p-layer. It can't cross the the pn-barrier so it wanders up through the n-layer through the circuit (the current), back to the p-layer and fills the hole to create neutrality between n and p layer.
The reason why he gets an small amount at all is because of the diodes, they are made of one big PN-Junction, already hooked up and to make it work, they must be TRANSPARENT so the PN-junction is exposed to the light. The CD has no effect other then reflect back some photons and increase the amount of light a bit. The Wires has no effect at all other than connecting 3 diodes in series. Depending on the materials making the p and n layers and layer thickness in these diodes, the efficiency is different on different wavelength of the light.
So to all of you screaming FAKE, this guy has at least tried to read up on the subject (you can kind of see how he was thinking) but not clearly understood how it really works, he just got lucky to get something out of it at all... That's more than you guys did ;)

They are zener diodes. Don’t try this project, I did it and it won’t power anything
DT-830 multimeter set at 2000mV range, so about 900mV on display. About the forward voltage x3 diodes.
The wires may be acting as a wi-fi antenna and at wi-fi freq the diodes act as capacitors in series with wires with some rectifier action added in. The diodes may also add some photo voltaic voltage to the 900mV.
yeah I improvised a windmill with just a rubber band, a fan and a spare windmill i had sitting there.
A made hundreds of these for my motorhome travelling abroad, suffice to say the record stopped before reaching the other side and was pulled up at the border patrol point before I was about to be accused of bootlegging! What is the voltge output for this solar cd's?
@@wazileiyjh the wattage was low because even though I was able to get .5 volts it was probably about a mA. However salt water by itself has given me pretty powerful results.
Using different metals like steel, copper, and magnesium alloy I was able to produce different amounts of amperage due to their conductivity. I spent about a year fooling around with salt water batteries.
I discovered making one big salt water battery cell does not equal more power. The secret to salt water power is found on a micro scale, because you produce 10 times more amps by producing smaller salt water cells and connecting them in series and parallel so much so I was able to power several LEDs. While producing power for the lights the cells would produce hydrogen, and then stop when the lights were disconnected.
However I was shocked one day when I tried to make a dry salt power cell (almost impossible for me to figure out) and I noticed when the sun from the window hit the cell (it was a simple Penny cell) it increased the amperage. This made me wonder if the sun light hitting the copper was causing a reaction similar to a solar cell. I never did go further than that.

Diodes are generally made of silicon . Just like a solar cell . They will output a voltage just like an LED attached to a meter. He is not changing the “Q” of anything. The part about the diodes isn’t really that wrong. Solar cells are just terrible diodes and LEDs (and probably some other diodes) are terrible solar cells.

well, actually, you can ignore those fancy wire arrangement (looks good, doesn't work) and just connect the diodes in series. That will even give you more current because the resistant is reduced. But, the best choice is to buy solar panel, that would be easier and practicaly functional (looks good, works).

As others have pointed out, the voltage produced is simply a product of solar excitation of a semiconductor junction, i.e. the diodes. Notice that this is almost 1v but it is open circuit voltage. if you increase efficiency by forgetting about the CD and fancy copper wire loop de loop buisness, and wire about 15 diodes like this in series, you could have 12v open circuit voltage. Unfortunately even a 1ma load would suck that down to probably half the voltage. Total wattage in other words is incredibly small. So lets say you want to produce a very modest 10a charging current for a small 12v battery bank at 14.4v. You do the math. Thats a LOT of diodes, no matter how you massage the numbers. Sure, they are pennies each, but 100,000 pennies works out to a lot of dollars to get the same power as you get from a $100 solar panel and charge controller. So even optimizing by forgetting about all the CD nonsense is a totally worthless and impractical idea. Oh, that would be a lot of soldering, too. Could you cut, bend, and solder the leads of say 100 in an hour? How many weeks of round the clock soldering are you interested in doing?
You would get better results from oxidizing copper plates on a stove burner. Even that would be far less cost efficient than simply buying solar panels. You can buy loose cells and wire them together. For all that extra work, you still don't come out ahead compared to buying complete panels because of all the broken or defective cells. Believe me, if there were a cheaper method of practical and usable amounts of solar electric power generation, somebody would be doing it already. The simple ideas have all been tried.

If I was going to make a lot of those by hand, the first thing I would do is make a template for the wire bending. A piece of wood the size of a CD and some tac nails. Nail the tac nails in the wood template where you want the wire to bend. Then you just bend the wire around the tac nails and then transfer the wire to the CD. You will spend a little time to make the template. But after it's made, you can bend a lot of wire in a short period of time. If you were only making one cell, a template wouldn't be very practical. But if you had to make about 20 or 30, a template would save a lot of time bending wire.

No it was not 4 volts. It was 900+ -E3 volts=less than 1 volt
These are zener diodes or simple diodes connected in series. You can connect these in series without any cd and you'll get low ampere voltage

I think all you need is diodes and it could be any size diodes because all diodes are the same concept as solar cells. Solar cells are diodes.
If you put power to a solar cell it will light up like an LED. Not very bright because it's not designed for that, but the concept is the same. An LED is a diode and a diode is an LED and a LED is a solar cell and a solar cell is an LED.

A photo-voltaic cell is a diode bro, also there are projects of semiconductor devices that convert RF into electrical current, they are developing these new semiconductors to be able to power small gadgets using wireless power supplies, so I guess this is totally true.

It is purely voltage from the diodes - photo voltaic effect of the PN junction, as the diodes are in the glass body, about 300mV per diode is about right... It has nothing to do with CD and wire arrangement, you could just mouth these diodes next to each other, connecting in series with the same results and much less space consuming. Pretty much sure if plastic body diodes were used, there would be no voltage...
Also it will not sustain much current, if you connect even tiny tiny load it will drop your voltage down to 0V...
Yeah, only works with glass case diodes like the 1N34 (also great for making a simple crystal radio).

It was proposed to make a Solar panel based on MP 26 transistors (or MP 37 - I forgot it for years ago) - for this it was necessary to remove the upper part (cap) of the transistor housing to get sunlight on the crystal. The effect was the same as in this video!

Эффект получался, таким же, что и в этом ролике !

However exposed to the light PNP or NPN transistor junction is the best for switching purposes, as the light sensor, not for the power generation... Energy - yes but reflectivity of the CD acting like a mirror probably focuses more light into the diode to produce energy. The zig-zag pattern of the wires? Perhaps it is possibly picking up RF out of the air also. Some diodes react to light, perhaps they also are like the 1N34 or catwhisker used in a simple radio receiver that picks up and tunes into a radio frequency in the air. There is no Tuning of this array of wires as an antenna but the capacitance and inductance may hone in on a narrow enough bandwidth of RF to add energy to the solar energy effect of the diode - notice like a 1N34 it is clear glass so light strikes the PN material to rectify the RF and solar produced energy in the air? Else it is purely solar and the significance of the wire array similar to some antenna array (not practical by antenna design mind you) is zilch and the voltage produced would have existed just with the 3 diodes without extra energy by the antenna type array??

The diodes with their transparent body can "trap" photons of the sunlight and convert them into what we call electrical energy. The ratio is very bad, but it is possible. Same effect can be achieved if you file a transistor so the semiconductor material gets exposed to sunlight. Some people here confuse voltage and amperage. While the voltage can be around 0.3V, the amperage will be very, very low, just a few tenths of a milliampere (1/1000 A) at best. So the power, which is the product of the current (voltage) multiplied by the amperage, remains very, very low and will never be sufficient to charge a smartphone (apart from the low voltage) or even drive an LED. There is no practical application for this setup. Just teaching tech. No fake or mystery in this nice experiment, just simple science.
What a waster if time, you could just hook up the diodes to the MM with alligator clips and be done in 15 seconds !!!

You can just get ultra bright LED and point it at the sun and get 3 x more voltage and even about 1 or 2 mA of usable power.

You need a freshly picked grenade pin. The pin is all you need so just toss the rest of it away. You also need to copy electric Boogaloo to the cd. I think i saw some of that glue at the depo next to the battery operated claw hammers. Good luck to you.

It's fake, there's no way a cd with a couple wires on it couple produce electricity. You can see in the video when he shows It's producing current that the wires go under the table, he's hiding a battery underneath the table and controls the output with his foot or with a friend to make it look like the cd produces less power when he covers it up.

The diodes convert the light into electricity. In theory, all that should be really necessary is to wire up the diodes as they are what generates the current from the light. The CD and wires are probably snake oil.

Made 6 of these, got sticky fingers. Stuck em in my cd stacker in the back of my tesla. Drilled appropriate holes to let sun in. Range improved from infinite! Only thing is i acc superglued thumb and indexfinger to fast forward and random button on the headunit simultaneously. I now forever travel at random warpdrive. @@billybrandt355 I'm not an expert, but I think I know how it works. Fuel is poured into an energy generator, which burns in it, and creates heat that creates energy. So the sun heats the copper that conducts electricity.
@@bogdan11137 electricity is the flow of electrons, simply heating a conductive metal will not get electrons to move. Solar panels work on a different principle than just heating up metal.
