- The Prime Minister has divided opinion with his rollback of green policies. Some say he is thinking of the cost of living crisis but others thinking he is undermining commitments and slashing imaginary policies.
Alexis Conran is joined by Owen Jones and Isabel Oakeshott to discuss.

Smart of Sunak to have a group of his voters behind him while being interviewed.
First austerity and now this, why are the Tories so anti growth?
Because they're pro getting richer......
Austerity (funny word for cutting government spending) is anti growth? You do understand that the government cannot create money, only steal via taxation and redistribute?
Austerity was caused by the labour government fooking up the economy worse than Liss truss
Crouchy,
I can't believ you wrote that, there is zero growth from the Net Zero legislation, it already has crippled some industries and will do far worse unless we drop it completely. It adds to inflation and that is never good.

The reason Heat Pumps are a problem in the UK is the housing stock isn't up to A+ insulation standards and new builds aren't being built to accommodate the ecosystem they need.
I just did an extension and refurb of my ground floor and went into this in depth
1 get your house to A+ insulation standard
2 Install underfloor heating
3 Install large water tank as heat store
4 Install Thermal solar + Electric solar if you can
Then the Heatpump works fine
Based on research I'd recommend Infrared electric radiator with point 1, 3 & 4 if possible for old housing stock its not practical for most to rip up your floor but you can insulate it
The rollback Sunak has just done removes the mandate for Landlords to upgrade to C+ insulation standards you couldn't make this up he's basically said fk tennants
One lie after another 🙄
I got a heat pump and it is halved my yearly lecky bill. I live in Scotland and our govmt is very good re insulation and grants for heat pumps. Every room in my house is now warm too. Scotland is a lot colder than little england. If a geat pump is put into a non insulated house then it wont work so well but an insulated home, they r g8.
But the cost of diesel and petrol will go up and with other costs such as food as farmers will be paying more either for fuel or electric vehicles.
So, the solution is to do nothing? Food, fuel and everything will cost more if nothing is done and climate change keeps getting worse.
The UK is among the leaders in a falling off a cliff race. What do we do at the end of the race?
We will take our trophy home and it will keep us warm, clean the air etc etc.
The Labour Party will save us..
Eat tins of cat food and doff our hats

Heat pumps work perfectly well in many other countries….seems to be an English problem !!!

You tell me how I can charge an electric car down my narrow road with no drive ways. No way you can install charging points. The infrastructure is not here. Even if everyone has electricity cars, the grid can’t handle it! The UK probably only contributes less than a percent to the total carbon produced globally.
Well said 👍
@Youraveragespro - Chargers can be installed in lampposts for on-street charging. Also, look at what the National Grid say about electricity supply for charging EVs (search in Google for "Busting the myths and misconceptions about electric vehicles" and choose the National Grid site - it should be the top result).
You can't. That's why the petrol ban will never happen, but be used as an election winning pledge, every 4 years, for at least the next 100.

Mr. Anecdotal evidence from Lincolnshire
The Bank Clerk blows it.
People will still be paying a fortune to heat cold damp houses for years to come now. His Father-in-laws investment into oil will pay off for a long time too. How many more investments have they made as being chancellor and PM has opened many doors for that family. Sunak is a snake. That will slither back to the states. And sit back and count the cash coming in. They have had years to start doing all this. When was the first COP?.
Is this just a short-term fix to draw in the climate sceptical voter, and the downright poor and can`t pay voter?
Yep.
I don’t want NET ZERO, we are one of the lowest in our output, go sort out those at the top of the list.
No way, they receive donations from the fossil fuel companies.
What’s the problem as the original date of 2030 was never achievable and with 4 of the worlds most polluters of the world’s atmosphere still using a massive amount of coal and gas so another 5 years in the UK won’t make much of a difference.
It will be an election tool every 4 years, for at least 100.
Isabel Oakeshott is always totally out of her depth. This countries media channels have a bad habit of including people like her for the purposes of "balance". It was amusing watching her ask the second caller Robert what he thought of her opinion, knowing full well that he would agree with her as he's as ignorant as she is, just so she could pretend that her point was a good one.
Unsurprisingly, Robert is from Lincolnshire - the paleolithic land that time forgot, full of mooks and drooling morons.

Lol Owen, good luck with a second hand electric car. The battery alone costs £ 10 000..😅😅😅
When are you expecting to need to buy a new battery for the EV? For example, Tesla batteries are expected to last at least 200,000 miles, and more likely up to 500,00 miles (there are some Teslas that are still being driven around that have over 300,000 miles). I have a PHEV and it is mainly used on electric. It has done 56k and the battery is still as good as new.
@@metaspectivate When you buy a second hand electric car , any moment. Why otherwise somebody will sell it? And it's not just the mileage, it's also the years of operation..Why anyone would buy a car with 40% battery efficiency and less than a 100 miles before need of recharge
@@ivhristov6511 - people sell cars for various reasons. For example, to upgrade, to get the next new one, to change the type - you seem to be thinking in a narrow-minded way and that "everyone" drives the same car they have until it is "dying".
@@metaspectivate True, but normally people are selling 5+ years old cars..Well , the battery is suppose to last between 7-10 years so if you buy a 6 years old car the possibility to have a problem with the battery after year or two is quite high , actually..So the answer still stays " any moment ".
@@ivhristov6511 - where are you getting your figures from? The WARRANTY might be only for 7 to 10 years, depending on the vehicle, but that's not the expected life of the battery..!! There are already cars around that age with batteries still going strong.

HEAT PUMPS DONT WORK PROPERLY AND UNRELIABLE. Ours broke down when in freezing weather. It takes an hour for the heating to come on. You cannot use a bath and have heating at same time. When you have power cuts or the pump stops working Then 5 Kwt is used in electric to restart the pumps. You have to pay extra electric. It is defo not cheaper.. Has to be serviced every 4 months in which the engineers travel 140 miles to do the service. NOT ECO AT ALL
You should sue your supplier. If it was correctly specified and the equipment was from a reputable company it would work fine. I've had mine for nearly three years. It's very reliable. the house is never cold and my bills are half what they were when I had a gas boiler
None of what Rishi said are government proposals, utter lies as usual
Not at all. Do not trust him.
We had double the CO2 emissions than the likes of France, Germany, Italy in early 90's, that's why we're leading in reduction, it's the same as when he said he's doubled education investment, it's because he halved it first, it's easy to double things that have been halved and it's easy to halve things that are double.
Thankfully we closed down the industrial side of the country and now we blame China.
Sunak talks of expense: the climate catastrophes are already costing many times any conceivable Net Zero might be & the expenses of Climate catastrophe will only soar from now. Not to mention the deaths the mutiliations the injuries the destroyed property, harvests, animals domestic & wild, villages & entire areas. At 77 I lost the sight in my Left Eye the hospital suggests is from London pollution. Now 81 my sight is getting worse. The pollution the Tories encourage make people sick, maim & kill them. What about the cost of this in money & lives? Treating and attempting to treat such things after they occur are not free. What is the saying? 'One stitch in time saves nine.' This case more like 999.
Yes .
Why are we being so binary about this? why are other alternatives not being explored? hydrogen for example?
Rishi's ideas? 👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎His government & ministers? 👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎
No. The very thought is risible.
1/ Average heat pump install is around £18k because your existing piping and radiators are not compatible so the whole lot has to be ripped out and start again!
2/ The uk produces nothing and all carbon neutral tech comes mainly from China which in turn it build by gas’s furnaces!
3/ The uk creates 1% of carbon emissions around the world so what difference does it really make !
4/ The planet is in a phase known as by-glacial as we are still coming out an ice age so naturally the planet is warming up!
5/ Worst weather conditions since records begun, so we have been recording the weather patterns for around 125 years yet the planet is 4.5 billion years old!
nice cherry picks
It seems that you are a short termist. Long term, heat pumps will save fuel costs and lower air pollution. The act they are not made in the Uk is a UK political decision which must be reversed.
Radiators etc can be recycled, and thus, save on iron, copper and lead imports.
We might not create much pollution in the UK (which I do not agree with: there is still a lot of asbestos to be cleared) but we delegate a lot of our pollution through the products/produces we import. They pollute where they are made, and in transit.
On your points 4 and 5. Look up these videos on RUclips:-
What the Hockey Stick missed about climate change
Is climate changing faster than expected?
Are humans really behind the extra CO2 in the atmosphere?
No he has not ,he is just kicking the can down the road

Rishi has won me over - To Keir Starmer. Labour has green (and other) credible policies. The Tories have no noticeable policies, credible or otherwise. I currently drive a 22 year old Honda Civic, my next car WILL be a used EV. We need to move faster to net zero, it will create many new well paid jobs insulating houses, installing solar PV(domestic and commercial), offshore wind/wave/tidal power, sustainable farming and that's just for starters.

Electric cars are losing 50% of their value after 2 years. Not good.
buy one two years old then
It is good for take-up. If used values go down to par or below par with ICE, then more people on the used market can afford them. If 80% or so of cars are bought used, then this is the cost reduction that Owen (in the video) was talking about. The only vehicles that are bought for their value to appreciate are special editions and 'classics' (as in, not a 2023 EV). Are you really talking about the EV value as someone who buys brand new? Do you buy outright, on PCP or do you lease? Or is this just a theoretical position where you imagine that an early-adopter is expecting to get a high resale value?
Don't be damn ridiculous
Sunak has certainly won me over with his pragmatic approach to zero emission target in the UK.; and I suspect that I am only one of the millions of voters who feel the same way.
