Even Hopkins has since voiced his displeasure with appearing with the film. He said that Lecter lost his mystique and fear factor once let out of his cage and out in the open
This implies any sequel was doomed to fail, but I don't think that's true. Have the film follow Clarice hunting him down and keep the mystique around Lecter by showing him sparingly. Meanwhile, set up some kind of emotional punch that develops her character further at the end.

@@MovieFan1912 An Italian actor playing an Italian character in a movie shot in Italy: what makes it so interesting or peculiar, may I ask? What were they supposed to do, cast an American actor and have him speak in a mock Italian accent? Scott did exactly that in his terrible Gucci movie with Lady Gaga and Adam Driver, so we should be glad that in 2001 they had the common sense of casting Giannini.
The footage of Hannibal attacking the person was actually the only part with which I take issue - the first movie established that he did so without raising his heart rate, yet here we see him panting and roaring with madman wide-eyes. The Hannibal tv-series is the quintessential Lecter to me. That said, the first film with Hopkins was pure gold. Mikkelsen is the perfect guy for playing Lecter with his way of of just radiating that sort of hidden threat under a paper-thin veneer of civility. A sense of quiet brutality.

Maybe a sequel would’ve been interesting if Hannibal was implied to be around rather than actually being shown on screen. Think, Hannibal being this unseen monster leaving messages, familiar deaths slowly approaching your location day by day, no one believes that this unstoppable psycho is coming for you. It’s not the question what is he, but a matter of where is he?
That would be interesting because it is kind of the opposite situation of the original. In the first he's in one place for most of it we know where he is but not what he's planning or thinking so if this one played out where we know what he's up to but not where he is would be a nice parallel
You’d kinda have to balance the hints so as to not create a “this is so fucking obvious an amoeba could figure it out, why do the police do nothing?!” situation.
I think the issue is a clash of what would be artistic and what audiences would want. Audiences would want to see Hannibal so having him in the shadows and only hinted at for most of the movie until he finally shows up would be a letdown

Starling rather than blame Bolton for violating her orders-and even if she did, they'd lecture her on needing to have better control over situations-felt responsible because she was supposed to be in control and things went horribly wrong. It didn't help that Krendler and the others-who unlike Krendler as was pointed out weren't paid by Verger for their influence in the situation-were quick to pass judgment she was weak and in the wrong just because her being the lead-as well as to them a woman-made her an easy target/scapegoat. the fact that the ending was changed blows my mind and explains why this movie didn't work after so many years of wondering why also Ridley Scott's Robin Hood is actually good I can't defend Hannibal but I can defend Robin Hood
I read this then saw it. Book and movie are both shit but the movie ending made more sense than the book ending. Clarice turning into Lecter's lover and cannibal companion was complete bullshit. There are light years between being screwed by FBI bureaucracy (done ham handedly in both book and film) and become a cannibalistic serial killer. It was almost like Harris was appeasing the Lecter fan-girls.
@@chrissonofpear1384 Hypnosis can theoretically alter the way one thinks on a slight scale. It cannot, however, immediately change an otherwise moral person into a cannibalistic murderer. In order to believe that, we would have to believe that Clarice already had a predisposition towards murder and eating people, which goes completely against her otherwise established character.
If all of this year's Nostalgiaween is going to start with a parody of the *ABSOLUTELY AWESOME* Unsolved Mysteries opening... yeah. I'm in. Also, I love you for using that opening.
Any complaints with the story of the movie can literally be explained by simply saying "They had to change the story from the book because no actress including Foster would do the movie with the original ending, and all the other sub plots from the book were cut because the studio didn't like them so that effected the story as well". And the ending chapter of the book is actually chilling, and it's difficult to live up to Lambs when Lambs was so close to the book, but Hannibal was forced to be so different from the source material. I still enjoy the film for what it is. It isn't the worst Hannibal movie ever.
@@jmurray1110 Long story short? Verger's sister kills Verger (via moray eel down the throat) after stealing his sperm via sodomy so she can have a child and inherit his money, Lecter says "Blame that shit on me". Lecter then kidnaps Starling, fails to brainwash her into thinking she's his dead sister Misha, they then eat Krendler's brain together and run off to Argentina as lovers. The final chapter is Barney and his girlfriend on holiday in Argentina, Barney spots Lecter and Starling at the opera, Lecter spots Barney and waves which causes Barney to flee the country in terror. It's an ending that honestly shits on what the movie did, but I'm guessing nobody was ready for that Clarice Starling heel turn.

The Dennis Farina era of Unsolved Mysteries was a complete total joke. It butchered a classic tv show from the 80s and 90s. I still remember the toll free number 1-800-876-5353. This show, Rescue 911, America's Most Wanted, Sightings, COPS, Real Stories of the Highway Patrol, and World's Wildest Police Videos were reality tv long before the days of American Idol, Dancing with the Stars, The Bachelorette, and even Survivor. Some of these shows even predate The Real World by a few years. Not to mention that when these shows were popular there was little to no internet or cellphones. I'm such an Unsolved Mysteries fan I even know about Raymond Burr's and Karl Malden's specials before Robert Stack took over as well as the spinoff Final Appeal. I even have the ghosts soundtrack on vinyl that was released on Terrorvision's website last year. When Keely Shaye Smith showed up, the Robert Stack era of UM was decent but it was slowly starting to go downhill a bit. The first seven seasons (87-95) are the absolute best in my opinion.
Those who are curious about the brain eating scene, go to Nostalgia Critic's Top 11 Scariest Performances. It does show it but that was before RUclips became pansies.
I really liked Hannibal. It's cool when Lecter is more explicitly evil and manipulative, it was pretty fresh to see him free to do the weird stuff that got him locked up, Julianne Moore was a pretty good Clarice, as you said his chemistry with the detective and the brain eating scene are neat, and I liked the implication that Hannibal was traumatized by people eating animals and that's why he identified with Clarice.
7:00 ish, that actually is the point - she was in the right, it's Hannibal at the end of the movie that affirms Clarice was in the right (want a medal for integrity, look in a mirror)

the first problem for me is "she's not jodie foster", I just couldn't accept a different face as the same character. that broke the suspension of disbelief and took me out of the movie all the time.
Julianne really is a great actress, but this was not the role for her. Replacing the talented Jodie Foster who won an Oscar for SOTL was gonna be thankless for even another talented actress. Plus her accent is so meh whereas Jodie had such a subtle one that matched her nature voice
Liver is delicious. Fry up some bacon, saute some onions in the left over grease, cook the liver in what's left, pile everything on top of the liver and serve. Yummy.
The novel Hannibal is one of my favorite books I honestly think its even better than Silence of the lambs in some ways (mainly my immense love for the characters of Margot and Mason Verger) so I honestly really like this movie even if it isn't that good.
What bothers me even more about the nurse scene than the 'roar/growl' sound effect is that Lecter's heart rate is never meant to rise. He is meant to be very cool and collected whenever he attacks, so why does he look so incredibly furious? He should look calm, like in the silence of the lambs.

@@ScreamBloodyGwar The order of the books is Hannibal Rising, Red Dragon, Silence of the Lambs and Hannibal. Red Dragon is a remake if Manhunter but I think it's way better than Manhunter.
@@javathehunt790 Actually you might have quoted it before the movie came out. I remember it being in the ads for the movie. It's the main reason why I know which movie it's in honestly.
Emma Crooke I disagree. Man hunter was better imo even though I liked Edward Norton as Will Graham. Nostalgia Critic actually did an Old vs New video on it
I'm really digging the Unsolved Mysteries vibe. I loved that show.

Gordan Ramsay - "WHERE'S THE LAMB SAUCE!"
the fact that the ending was changed blows my mind and explains why this movie didn't work after so many years of wondering why also Ridley Scott's Robin Hood is actually good I can't defend Hannibal but I can defend Robin Hood
Wasn't she somewhat hypnotised?
@@chrissonofpear1384 Hypnosis can theoretically alter the way one thinks on a slight scale. It cannot, however, immediately change an otherwise moral person into a cannibalistic murderer. In order to believe that, we would have to believe that Clarice already had a predisposition towards murder and eating people, which goes completely against her otherwise established character.
Although if she just becomes passive to what's going on, and less aware, that might be different.
Good point, though.
Hannibal is waay better than the original, which is easely the most overrated movie ever
If all of this year's Nostalgiaween is going to start with a parody of the *ABSOLUTELY AWESOME* Unsolved Mysteries opening... yeah. I'm in.
Also, I love you for using that opening.
“Do you know how many people are going to think this line is from the first movie?” I died lmao
Kiera good evening, Clairice 😏
I get your point. Personally i think his "okidoki" is super creepy....
What was the ending

I am loving this year's "Nostalgia-ween" intro, big time "Unsolved Mysteries" fan. Especially the classic Robert Stack era.

I had to pause to go look up Gladiator 2 and all I have to say is "why"?

Exactly. It just only need one movie. Why a sequel? There is nothing to continue it
Me (watching alien covenant): but wait weren't the aliens un Prometheus bio weapons from the enginieers? And why blade runner 2048 was much better without you?
Ridley Scott: Quiet or i'll make a sequel of gladiator.
Me: you are really doing that?
Scott: yeah sorry dude
the first problem for me is "she's not jodie foster", I just couldn't accept a different face as the same character. that broke the suspension of disbelief and took me out of the movie all the time.
Julianne really is a great actress, but this was not the role for her. Replacing the talented Jodie Foster who won an Oscar for SOTL was gonna be thankless for even another talented actress. Plus her accent is so meh whereas Jodie had such a subtle one that matched her nature voice
