Quick note that I made the mistake of in the video is that by using adaway it does actually consume battery life cause you're adding many hosts within the system host files which can drain battery life especially if you have a budget phone. Maybe not as much as the VPN ad-blockers, but it still does. Thanks for your guys input, appreciate it! 😄

Honestly, I like the first option where you tell me what to type in the DNS option without the apps, cause the games that I play have ads that are so damm annoying. The downside is I can't claim the rewards nor can't complete all of the daily tasks but it is a small price to pay for that HUGE annoying interruption when playing a game. I have two questions
    1. Is Dns ad blocking safe? Does the Dns monitor all my browsing to filter out ads?
    2. Does this also block the unskippable in app ads in games or is it only for webpages?

    • @ignoram9us
      @ignoram9us 2 года назад +20

      RethinkDNS developer here.
      1. It is safer than not blocking anything at all. Infact, apps like RethinkDNS in fact go one level further and encrypt your DNS queries that otherwise wouldn't be encrypted.
      2. DNS adblocking is effective at blocking "ads" across app, including games. I don't recommend it, since I'd rather folks pay for games or support the developers with monetization of their work. Besides, DNS adblocking is trivial to bypass, though RethinkDNS does provide additional options to thwart such attempts by apps (an anti-anti-adblocker, if you will).
All that said, RethinkDNS unlike other apps reviewed by HowToMen (with the exception of Malloc's AntiStalker) isn't focused on adblocking but instead on Network Security and Privacy.

      With hosts,
It is possible to target just
specific ad servers that affect you.
On my PC,I've been using the hosts file for 10 yrs as my free ad blocker.
I found that by just blocking googleads, it cut down DRAMATICALLY on the ads!
      That's only 1 entry.
As I would go along, I would occasionally find a bothersome ad server and ad it to the hosts file as well.
I have probably 100 entries over 10 years.
Its amazing how few hi volume adservers there really are.
I don't usually need to block adservers from Finland or Kenya, etc.
Its nice to have a comprehensive blocklist like adguard, but it's not always necessary.
Unfortunately, I can't get to hosts in my phone and I'm not into rooting, which is what they bank on.
So the private DNS option seems best for me for the phone.

I have a question, when I use corporate mail or corporate web services and use the DNS change, do I risk losing confidential data? As far as I know, with the help of DNS, it is possible to change the site that will open at my request. For example, ADguard is a russian company, and you do not want to use such services from russia, china, etc.
