I sincerely hope you didn't mean "breadboard" when said "stripboard" otherwise you would simply short some ouputs/inputs together and potentially ruin the board. Putting the pins underneath would allow to mount the board on female headers, thus allowing to replace the board easily if need be. The compact size combined with plenty of RAM to store our programs, makes it a good candidate for some serious projects.
He is doing the right thing, soldering pins to the bottom. So that he can plug into a stripboard.
