Imagine having a bass player on the brilliance level of John Entwistle who can step up during recording and say ...hey let me add some majestic French horn into this part ...and takes it to a whole new level of uplifting, orchestral masterpiece! What a band indeed! We are certainly spoiled.
Unfortunately we will never have another band like it, 4 young people at the height of creativity, sensitivity and inspiration produced 3 masterpieces and rock was never the same again.
Quadrophenia has been part of long time Who fans’ lives for more than 50 years. So pleased you and many in your generation “get it” and can appreciate one of rock’s true masterpieces. The mighty Who, best band ever 🎸💥
Thank you for all the hard work and time you graciously do to bring so much joy and feeling back into our lives. You are greatly appreciated for all you do and for being your true self. You're a fantastic, compassionate, and giving person.
Glad you included The Rock, one of the two fantastic instrumentals on the album along with Quadrophenia. Townshend may not be a top 10 guitarist, but his tone, note choices, and feel throughout Quadrophenia are just absolutely perfect. Keith Moon's finest hour (or 80 minutes), and John Entwistle is also at a peak point, and Daltrey's voice was pure gold. Their best album by a whisker over Who's Next. Edited to add: Entwistle on Love Reign uses a very interesting and unique way of playing chords in the verses, but single notes in the chorus. It adds a tension that is brilliant, and also unexpected as the chorus is so powerful and he's not using the power chords there.
I saw the Who 4 times during their prime and every show was a mind blower. What a time for music ! When the mid 70s hit, the music scene changed, but we will always have those middle 60s to mid 70s bands to listen to. The Who were right up there with the best.
Was lucky enough to1 see them twice in the 1980s. Rogers voice so pure and strong blew me away. He would be active on stage and still sing so strong. Blown away by this song ❤
@@L33ReactsI think that you should get back into Rush and Yes. You barely covered 1/4 of their catalog. Even the albums that nobody suggests are worth a listen. Certainly all the Rush albums. They were great right to the end. With Yes, they take a big dip after Anderson left. But they are beginning another upswing with their 26th album with new studio tracks. A definite improvement over their last 4 albums.
I saw them on tour for this. Just past Thanksgiving in 1974 sitting second row and Lynyrd Skynyrd was the opening act. Far and away the best concert I ever saw
The Who was my dad's absolute favorite band (and subsequently, one of my favorites as well). He passed away in 2016 from complications due to COPD. He'd been in the hospital for a week, and we eventually had to make the decision to take him off the bipap machine. He was unconscious at that point - he'd been given a ton of morphine to keep him comfortable through his transition out of this world, but my mom and I were in the room with him for those last hours, and played a lot of his favorite music thinking maybe, maybe it would be getting through. Love Reign O'er Me was the last song we played before he passed, and it still makes me feel emotional, and usually makes me cry. Such an amazing song, with so much depth. It makes me happy when other people get to discover songs like this and add them to their life and consciousness. So glad you got to experience this one.
Besides being a total musical masterpiece, there is no rock album with two better instrumentals than Quadrophenia and The Rock. Townsend is a musical genius up there with Lennon and McCartney.
L33, you might now check out the Movie "Quadrophenia". It's a very well made film, accurate to the Album's story, and has one of the greatest soundtracks ever.! Try to find a Video of the Movie's opening scene. This opening follows the song "The Real Me", and it really sets up the mood and flavor of the Film. For L33's next Who Album, maybe we can start "Tommy"? And after "Tommy", it would be great to do highlights from the Movie, such as Elton John's "Pinball Wizard", and Tina Turner"s "Acid Queen.
It's always cool to see someone else appreciating something as much as I do (and likely anyone else here that's listening). An incredible album. I spent a lot of hours back in the mid 70's listening to Quadrophenia with some friends, and hearing these songs really brings me back. One of those friends bought about 20 tickets to see The Who on their Quadrophenia tour in 2012 and three of us that were listening together back in the 70's went, along with a huge group of friends. One of my favorite concert experiences ever. Not just the music, just the whole night. Most of us got rooms at a hotel near Joe Louis Arena and met for dinner at a nice restaurant there before the show. They played the album in sequence (followed by many of their other songs), and to be sitting there with my friends who I had listened to the album with all those years ago was such a good feeling. I'd keep looking over at them and we'd all be singing every word, just soaking it all in. Townshend's masterpiece, no doubt about it. Starting with Quadrophenia at the beginning blending into 'The Real Me', all the way through to 'The Rock' and 'Love Reign O'er Me', wow. Mind blowing.
I saw that tour in Providence, it was the first time that they went back to Providence since our mayor canceled their 1979 show in the aftermath of the stampede in Cincinnati. Anyone still holding tickets to the original canceled shows got in free.
To have lived with this music the first time was a blessing. To relive it again with all your reactions and love for "our" music is a precious gift. So thank you for embracing it and appreciating the genius musicians of our past. Certainly the Who fit the category of genius. Blessings Lee and all.
I saw them do this entire LP live in Pittsburgh. They had Billy Idol doing vocals parts to help play the different characters. It was an unforgettable concert.
You made it! It was worth the wait. Great choice to do this album...it has been a favorite of mine for 5 decades now. And you can understand why now that you've heard it too.
@@L33ReactsQuadrophenia is ranked 16th in my all time favorite albums. The only song I don't like is The Punk Meets The Godfather. The rest of this album is great.
Before checking out the Movie I would recommend the BBC Special “The Real Me: The Making of Quadrophenia”. In fact i’m off to watch it now… Thanks for doing the studio version of LROM out of The Rock. It made all the difference.
There is a fantastic documentary on the making of Quadrophenia featuring Pete. There’s a portion when he is talking about Moonie’s unique drum style and he plays an isolated portion…will blow your mind.
The three studio albums below are the core of The Who. Add "Live At Leeds" and it's four of the best in Rock (just like the four Band Members!) "Tommy" is such a musical breakthrough, it's difficult to properly assess. Not as "hard" as the other Who albums, but it's one of my absolute favorites. "Who's Next" consistently has the BEST songs. I used to joke that it was a "Who Greatest Hits Album". Has amazing Album flow, song to song. "Quadrophenia" has the best individual performances, best musical recording and production, and the most solid story-theme.
1. I haven't listened to this album as often as, say "Close to the Edge", so hearing it again now, through you, has been super fun! I had forgotten how OUTSTANDING the album is!! 2. I REALLY enjoyed your reactions - especially your analysis and thoughtful commentary at the end! ❣
LROM is my all time favorite song and Quadrophenia is my all time favorite album. It was the peak of them as a band. And the story through the songs and song writing itself is pure genius
Thankfully, The Who has added "The Rock" into their live gigs ever since around 2012 or so. For me, never in my wildest imagination did I think I'd ever be standing in center field at Fenway Park about 30 feet away from the Green Monster in Boston watching The Who performing "The Rock". But it happened on September 13, 2019 and it was GREAT! BTW, you should add "The Rock" into the title of this youtube video so you'll get more clicks on it. Who fans LOVE "The Rock".
Arguably the greatest rock album ever recorded. By arguably the greatest rock band (no argument from me). Loved your reactions all the way through both this album and The Who in general too, Lee. Next from The Who? Maybe go back to the '60's and check out either their debut or their first concept album, The Who Sell Out. And the film Quadrophenia is brilliant. The Who aren't in it, by the way. They just provide the music and the storyline.
Fantastic wrap up to this great concept album, one of their best songs for sure. Have you done their album Tommy? Another classic double concept album. Sounds great in its own way, another WHO masterpiece. Enjoy! 🔥🎵🎸🎤🎸🎹🎻📯🎶🔥

Quadrophenia, my favorite album of all time. I can suggest for the next album that is between "Quadrophenia" and "Who are you": Who By Numbers" (cover made by John Entwistle). It is also an excellent album, however less complex: more accessible tracks where Pete Townshend expresses his discomfort. Note a very good composition by John Entwistle. Would like to see you do a deep dive into the "Who Are You" album. Start out with the song written by John Entwistle called "Trick of the Light". It's a great banger of a Who song, with John Entwistle's humor intertwined. The song practically defines the way John died in a Las Vegas hotel room after a cocaine binge with a stripper.
