I grew up in Vermont and still live here,I can go places for a while but always come back ,I can’t imagine living in any other state. Being that I grew up fishing in Vermont I know spots that look like there straight out of jurassic Park that no one but me fish that are moss carpeted full of wild mushrooms old growth forests and as beautiful as you can ask for. I grew up exploring Vermont rivers for swimming and fishing reasons and the best spots to fish are mostly unknown by others not of the area and most locals don’t even know if these very secluded areas. I see a lot of people who come here from out of state to fish the Lamoille river which some days are packed with what I assume to be fly fishing guided tours out or Stowe Vermont for rich people in full clown suits . I’ll go fishing in a thunder storm late some evenings because that’s when the browns start to get hungry. Right now I’m getting a lot of brown action and a few rainbows and a lot of small Brook trout. In the last 2 weeks I have caught like 50 keepers I throw most of then back. I will keep the best biggest trout every season from each of the 3 species of river trout then have a smoked trout BBW or cook them in butter or all dolled up with unions and garlic etc. etc. I keep the 1 largest brown the 1 largest rainbow and a few good brook trout rash season for 3 meals . I have had 2 trophy fish both huge browns i got in the last week of fishing. I kept for eating a 21in 3.1 pound brown and since I kept him I released another I got the other day that was bigger then 21 in and 3.1 pounds. I know a lot of ancient rivers with large 12-15 deep goarges one after the other after the other all over Vermonts rivers and steams and catch fish you look for your whole life. I never seen anyone fishing my holes there just to hard to get to and unless your show you’ll never find them. I fish around Morrisville,Stowe, eden, craftsbury,Greensboro, Montgomery,Albany,Troy, Johnson,Jericho,Waterbury which is my local areas then I’ll drive all over Vermont to find new places and there are monsters out there to catch. Most of the places I go don’t get fished and you may catch 2-3 massive browns in one pool . The fishing lately has been more amazing then the last 20 years and I’m landing awesome fish right now it’s a great time to fish Vermont. Best year ever .
I've been pleasantly surprised with Vermont so far. Followed my east coast wife out here from Oregon where the fishing is stellar for trout/steelhead/salmon and spent maybe 14 hours to pick up a dozen rainbow and my buddy got a nice 2-2.5lb brown. 4 or 5 of the rainbow were over 2.5lbs an no longer tasted like stocked fish
Was there first time first week in Oct. One trout in 4 days. Very challenging. Very beautiful. I have a similar plan to fly fish America. Madison River MT next August and NY PA this spring. All the best.
