Schloss Wernigerode

The castle of Wernigerode in the north east of the Harz mountains, Germany, has its origins around 1120. The chapel in the Gothic style dates from the 14th century. In the early 17th century the castle was abandoned but from 1671 converted to a baroque residence without military use. Starting 1858 the castle was rebuilt as a place befitting the vice Kanzler of the German Empire. Left as a residence in 1929 it became a museum in 1946.

Das Schloss Wernigerode im Nordosten des Harzes geht zurück auf eine Burg von 1120. Die Kapelle im gotischen Stil stammt aus dem 14. Jahrhundert. In der ersten Hälfte des 17. Jahrhunderts wurde die Burg verlassen, um ab 1671 als barockes Wohnschloss umgestaltet zu werden. Weitere entscheidende Arbeiten ließ der Vizekanzler des deutschen Reiches ab 1858 ausführen, um eine angemessene Unterkunft zu haben. Seine Familie verließ das Schloss 1929, seit 1946 ist es ein Museum.
