  • Look at an old photo. Then look in the mirror. Those two images are of the same person, right? How so? They don't look the same. Their memories are different. And virtually every atom in their bodies is different. We feel unity across time, but is this solidified sense of self an illusion?

This is an experience, and until it becomes YOUR experience, there is no way to understand it. It cannot be understood by logic or by the brain.

Did Deepak say something? His lips were moving but nothing coherent came out. No wonder the interviewer seemed frustrated.

I've experienced realization. It is the absence of questions. Attacking what you don't understand is kind of like burning witches.

This experience of "I" can be had only when a person transcends body, mind, senses. It cannot be understood by reasoning

Such a shame... All these people who are insulting Chopra (whom I'm neither agreeing nor disagreeing BTW as I find his reasoning half baked and incomplete) are offering no explanation... Just pure ad-hominem attacks without knowing the context from which he is talking about. He is talking about the same profound context from which Neoplatonism, Vedanta and many other philosophical traditions came from. The very same traditions which influenced Max Planck, David Bohm, Nikola Tesla and many others. Please, at least try to come up with some explanations, learn how think critically to be able to criticise people logically and coherently. And BTW, you don't have to insult them, you don't have to yell or show barbarism... If you think he is wrong, talk about it, explain it and prove it if you can. It's not simple, yet it seems most people choose the easiest shortcut when it comes to responding to others... Sorry but no surprise Trump has become a president in such society...

I doubt we are going to see any new relevant theory in the next decades. In fact we dont had nothing relevant in the last 20 years. The Higgs we already knew it was there..

I 've experienced absense of the sense of "I" a few times (only the first time seemed scary in retrospect). I'd love to see how the same interview would play out with an interviewer not unfamiliar with the absense of "I". Even though this interview as is very fine.

3minutes in.. I guess you have never tried LSD and lost the sence of "I" and still have all sences working(better than normal). Its like "you" watch everything without a filter(ego) from outside the matrix. This is very similar to what happen to me after 10 days vipassana meditation.

Chopra didn’t answer Khun’s question. Khun understood the argument that arisings in consciousness - patterns of thought etc. - are not “me”. But Chopra never explained how my consciousness is the same as your consciousness and as everything else that exists. His explanation does not seem to get us beyond us all being individual discreet fields of consciousness, though he says we can conclude from his observations and arguments that we are all one. I cannot see how this conclusion follows.

Everything in existence in this universe is energy interacting with other energy, including our consciousness, memories and thoughts.
With that said, even though our bodily cells get exchanged over time, the flow of energy remains the same. Hence, "we" remain the same.

@@NothingfailzIf they have already died, then they are dead. Wanting something and actual reality can be two different things. Some people make up delusional fairy tale belief systems to help them get through the rest of their own life. They apparently cannot face actual reality. Then even those people still die one day from something.

I like Deepak because he's attained a high level of personal equanimity that he lives by, but I don't necessarily agree with many of his explanations. It may simply be that he can't explain what it is that he himself has experienced or possibly awakened to.

What is the nature of personal identity? Simple: my experience of my being conscious is my experience alone and somebody's else's experience of their being conscious is their experience alone. Sure, we are all the same being consciousness ( self ) but we are not all the same self.

To experience non duality one needs to follow certain methodology like dik drisya viveka. Generally people don’t appreciate non duality if someone randomly say that there is only one pure consciousness .. Non duality teaching demands student to be first prepared.. they say student first need to do selfless work like charity to clean the mind then do meditation for concentrating the mind and then finally take the non dual teaching from a qualified teacher..

It is Schrödinger's equation where consciousness plays the final part. When I die consciously, I can go wherever I want to go at that moment. Think of your deepest wish and that will come true. It has for me with all my dreams in this life. Why should it be otherwise when I die. Even games like No Man's Sky reveal this truth :)

  • @viorelagocs

    Dear Robert,
    1. You are having a dream. In the dream there's you, your 7th grade teacher, your best classmate, and the girl you first fell in love with. How many persons are there inside the dream?... 4... How many dreamers are there?... Just one, You.... Inside the dream you are simultaneously what you call "you", your teacher, your mate and the girl. There's no one else but you having a dream. All the characters in the dream are you. All the characters exist only in your mind. Then you wake up. From THIS dream called WAKING STATE you woke up the same way... There's only one dreamer, one awareness...
    2. You assume there's two "I"'s in the room and you ask yourself how would it feel if your "I" would merge with Deepak's "I". What you assume is Deepak's "I" is just a construct of your mind... as it is yours distinct from his. The fact is you don't EXPERIENCE two "I"s, just one. That's exactly the point Deepak is making... There's no two "I"s in the room, just one. Your "I" is ALREADY merged with Deepak's "I".
Ho would it feel, you ask?... How do you imagine it would feel?... Exactly how you feel right now!!!... You don't have to do anything. Think about it... EXACTLY how you feel right now... You already have what you long for. You are having a FIRST PERSON EXPERIENCE of everything. Don't underestimate it, don't take it for granted. Of a body you call yours, of memories you call yours, of Deepak you call someone else than you... But Robert, you are dreaming. Deepak, me writing this, your body, memories are just characters in your dream... There's nothing else but you, Consciousness, the only "I", having a "dream'...
