  • Sew it yourself! The Sailrite® Throated Sail Cover Kit lets you make your own mainsail cover using Sattler® Marine Grade Fabric. Cover and protect your mainsail when flaked with this throated sail cover. The sail cover fastens under the boom with Twist-Lock Fasteners with a snap button finish to provide a clean look and reduce chafing. Secure the cover around the mast with a marine zipper. This sail cover pattern features pre-plotted, long-lasting Sattler fabric for easy construction. Got lazy jacks? Order the Lazy Jack Slit Kit (sold separately - SKU: 126564) along with the sail cover kit, and you can complete the mainsail cover and slits all at the same time. (Leftover thread and Sattler fabric from the Sail Cover Kit must be used to complete the Lazy Jack Slit Kit.)

Neat idea. I wish we had this video last year when we did our own. We considered putting Lazy-jack zippers on our new sailcover but opted to do what the previous owners did when they built the sailcover well over a decade before. There are reinforced slits just on the lower 4 inches of the sailcover. There was a little wear on the cover above the slits but it never burned through the reinforcement or even got close much less the next layer of fabric below it. Zippers seemed to be a lot of work to make a slit that hid the Lazy-jack and still have a flap inside to protect the sail from the Lazy-jack from chafing on it.
We figure we'd rather have the lazy jacks wearing on the sailcover instead of on the flakes of our expensive mainsail. That sail was the single most expensive item we ever bought for our boat and that includes repowering (although we did find a deal on a low-hours used diesel that was a drop-in swap.)
We also just copied the old sailcover which was constructed much differently than your kit. It worked well and was designed and built by sailmaker who was one of owners. It only has one vertical seam near the head on the "tall" part. It was quite the extravaganza with a 14' straight section of one piece of fabric on each side going from there all the way to the buldgeon. Luckily we had the old cover to use as a pattern I don't know how they measured and fitted it the first time. I have a feeling it was completely seen a few times using durascrim or other cheaper experimental fabric to get it right.

Thanks for sharing your experience! It sounds like you made a solid choice with the reinforced slits. It's always interesting to see how different designs can work well for various setups.

We do need to give a little tug downward on each one to get the slit to slide down into place under and around the Lazy-jack lines but we don't keep them too tight -just enough that they don't make too much noise flopping in the wind. They are 5/32" dyneema (or something like that -so yarn sized) They are so lightweight, tiny, and very slippery. They are grey and almost disappear yet do the job very well. Replacing all the Lazy-jack lines with tiny dyneema was a game-changer. It was fairly cheap too, since it was the thinnest line they had but still super strong.
We replaced the steel topping lift with dyneema too, which cut down on the chafe on the leach of the main and shedding of the telltales. When loosened it just flies out of the way since it is so lightweight. It never slaps hard on the roached area of the mainsail like the steel topping lift often did.

Great idea 💡. I hope to see once how to make a dinghy cover to protect the dinghy from the sun.

I have just completed making lazy jacks and fitted them on our boat. We are still using our current sail cover similar to the one in this vid. Can I buy just the 'add -on' hook and loop and zip parts to add to my current throated sail cover? That would be really cool and helpful.
