American orders in forgotten Mayan language in Mexico?!

- In Mexico I spent some time learning the Yucatec Maya language, which is indigenous to the Yucatán Peninsula and has been spoken in this area for thousands of years by the Mayan people. Even though lots of people still speak it, the younger generation is forgetting it and it was really interesting to go around and try and speak what I could speak. If you are interested in learning to speak the amazing Mayan language and help preserve Mayan culture, or just if you want to learn Spanish online or in-person with good local organizations, you can check out the schools I learned with here:

credit lady for recognizing a 'forgotten' language.
Maybe her parents or grandparents speak/spoke it, or perhaps there are a few ppl in her town/village that know a few phrases or can converse with some difficulty. That's how it is with these languages that solely survive for cultural/heritage reasons and aren't really of administrative or political importance :(

Mayan is definitely not a forgotten language, most elderly people in our communities grew up speaking mayan, and most of us, the younger generations know at least a decent amount of mayan. Of course this varies along the region, but for the most part, it still is a prevalent language in our communities.

She is so awesome and happy!
No se dió cuenta que le preguntó el precio en maya y ella responde en español, es una maravilla el cerebro como interpreta los lenguajes.
She was like , wait, stop🤣 youre talking above my paygrade...HELP!🤣🤣
There’s more than one dialect and some regions can’t understand the others language. This is because natives were decimated by the Spanish and catholic priests and were forbidden from speaking their native tongue along with practicing their religion. This caused the isolated groups language to develop differently. What’s worse is even now folks that speak a Mayan language deal with prejudice and and even regarded as an embarrassment holding the country back. But a white guy speaking it is cool, lol, seriously. A lot of Red Cross and Salvation Army foreigners learn it and fall in love with the culture. Side note, Germany has one of the only texts containing ancient history and language along with many artifacts they refuse to return to Guatemala and only agreed to return them as of 2021 but I’m not even sure if they’ve fallen thru. Where Dr. Henry W. Jones when u need him 😢
True. I learned a few words from a friend from Yucatán. I asked a friend from Guatemala about the same words, and he explained that it's not one language. They are dialectos with a lot of variation.
I did the same thing in Osaka Japan. They have their own dialect of Japanese. The locals would get so happy when I spoke it.
For those who don't know. She kept speaking Spanish not knowing what he was speaking. Without the proper accent, it is hard to know if your not listening for it.
Ignore the people in the comments, the lady was very happy and wanted to bring her grandma to speak with him
Solo quería que la ayudara a entenderle al pinche gringo para vender...
This made me cringe like damn, just make her life easy and tell her how much you want, doing the most.
Bro calm down maybe he thought she spoke Mayan it seems like he’s a in a little town and there’s towns that speak Mayan
@@kin5199 clearly she didn't, you can see that after he asks the first question in mayan
The natives languages from these foreign countries are dope. I’m from Peru and in the mountains they speak Quechua and some parts speak Aymara.
It's amazing that you speak so many languages
I love to hear different languages. I grew up in a family with 6 languages being spoken. My siblings and I were exposed to people from many cultures because if no one on base could sponsor a family due to language barriers, they were sent to us.
Wow, that’s a lot. What languages were they?
Bruh this a very weeb thing to do like if you went to Japan and started speaking Japanese to talk shit.
Is not weaboos who invented native language contact with the locals bruh, even in the middle age German nobles tried so bad to speak hungarian to hungarians people of the Kingdom of Hungary
She honestly didn't gaf you spoke Mayan. like no Mexican would.
Okay and? Haven’t you ever heard of the saying if you don’t have anything good to say, don’t say it. So what? Like what was the purpose of you saying that other than to try being mean and spiteful.
Spaniard logic.
Well at least she recognized that he was talking Mayan❤
I served a LDS mission in Merida Yucatan. Lived there two years. Couldn't learn much mayan. Have a book of Mormon in Mayan. It's an intense language. It was always so fricking cool to hear the locals in the pueblos speak it outside the city center. All the grandmas and grandpas who didn't even know spanish lol
I like that she called her neighbor to let her know he speaks Mayan and she don't get it.
