  • Many of you want to shrink wrap your own boat. Should you? Is it worth the investment of time, tools and materials? In todays video we will go over the proper way to wrap your boat; should you choose to do it. Do it the right way and your boat will be safe and sound all winter. Do it wrong and disaster could be the result. In this video I am using an old piece of shrink-wrap that has been used to cover the miss Stella, DO NOT USE OLD SHRINK WRAP!!!! Always use fresh untouched plastic!

    WELLLLL.....as a fellow wrapper of ALL things from boats, to campers ,to patio furniture, to ZAMBONI's!!!....I'm gonna give you a free tip that will save you a lot of money! As you take a piece of that very expensive Dr.Shrink tape and double it over on itself multiple times to protect the plastic, I CRINGE as I see those dollar bills getting thrown out! Instead, go to your local carpet dealer and get his scraps for FREE! He is usually glad to see you come to take some of his garbage! My local guy actually gives me his 10" X 10" sample swatches of carpets that he no longer carries. They work great and can be used in ANY situation where there is a sharp corner. That's my 2 cents worth! CHEERS!!

      I used to use carpet all the time. But because I wrap fast and hot there are times the carpet overheats and burns a hole on the one place I can’t reach. Yup the tip top of the 2x4. So for me the tape is the way to go. Merry Christmas!!

    This is my second year wrapping my 15' jet boat myself. I bought all the materials last year and did it with a torch used for roofing and killing weeds because that's what I had. It worked okay, but applied too much focused heat so I had to be careful for it melting the material. I bought the shrink wrap through dr shrink page on amazon, blue, 120 something foot roll cost me a little over 109 bucks. Probably the same one you talked about. I got some plastic caps for the 2x4's from amazon I think they were also dr shrink brand, they protect the deck and the cover from scratches and tears they were super cheap ($15) and they're reuseable. A 1000' roll of strapping, and a bag of metal strap buckles (also reuseable) for 20ish dollars each. First year cost me under 200 to wrap my boat myself. Because its a 120' roll I get 6 years of covers from that 109 dollar roll. Yea, the total price you put was for covering it this year because you bought all the tools but next year it'll be free because you'll have plenty of material left over. This year I purchased a dr. shrink gun to make it easier. 435 dollars. It worked great, no holes at all. In NJ I was quoted 400 alone to wrap my boat. In just 2 years I already saved money wrapping it. Doing the math of tools and material it averages 105 dollars per year to cover it. That saves me 300 per year. It took me less than 2 hours also from start to finish and I did it when it was 35 degrees out so I took several breaks to warm up my hands. I'll link the gun I bought and the 2x4 caps below. If anyone is handy I'd definitely say give it a shot if you wanna save a few bucks.

    So I bought a 12x20 carport in 2020 with my best friend. Well the canopy lasted about a year before it ripped down the center in July. (Jan 2021 to July 2022, so a bit over a full year and a half.) My next door neighbor who has a similar one but for the last 10 or so years just had his the same time I got mine, his shrink wrapped. Its held up great and now I plan on using some of the tips shown here to do my own.
    I don't have a pro heat shrink gun, but I'm also doing kinda a box anyway so, that should not be too big of a issue.
    I have a product called mule tape. Its a nylon webbing rated for 2k lbs pull strength from my job (its excess that was collected and stored for later use. Shortest runs about 100 foot. ) that is a nylon strap on steroids. I plan on running a set back and forth across my frame for support from snow and or wind, basically because I have 5 gallon buckets full of it and it's free.
    Now with this said I plan on putting this up soon, and up here in New England its rather cold already.
    Would a heat gun and a propane torch do a basic job of the seam at the belly band to hold down the wrap so I can just get away with it?
    I plan on using a propane heater head, the sun flower kind? I don't know what its called, a single catalytic round face heater to slowly bring it all taught once i have the edge secured and doors shut tight. I may instead borrow a jet heater (kero long tube heater) and just can't the shit out of it to bring everything to a slightly shrink and even tightness.
    Does my plan sound like a fools errand or like a mechanically incline sparky have half a shot at getting it covered 🤔
    I am looking st Amazon for a 14x25 foot or 14x50 foot roll since my height is 28 inches, 12 foot across pyramid, and mathematically it should not need more then 12 foot 8 inches to go across and the rest is for the fold and melt.
    Should I buy the 50 foot long section because I'm likely to just screw up?
    Should I go with a 17 foot wide x 25 long to make sure I have excess plastic 🤔
    I do plan on getting the tape and from the under side taping the sheet to the bands im running for some minor pull off resistance.
    (In July we had some high winds here by the coast and normally that's not the big issue. Snow load is, but now that we had it once I'm trying to mitigate factors to give me a running chance.)

    • @HoldFastMarine
      @HoldFastMarine  Год назад

      First off let me say this is a great comment!! very well written! Now to answer your question.
      It is a fools errand. Those sunflower torches don't have enough heat dispersed quick enough to not melt the shrink wrap slightly so you can weld it together. And you're likely to burn many hole and probably yourself holding up one of those jet heaters. Now I'm not anyone to tell anyone not to try something, thats how we learn (the hard way sometimes). My old boat house was completely shrink-wrapped, and it lasted for 2 years with only a few minor issues like holes and some sagging from snow, which you will have to get off to prevent ice, the ice is what punctures the wrap.
      If you end up trying this, please dont, but if you do id love for you to send me some photos to my email, wether it works or not. I hope I answered your question for you. Have a very merry Christmas!

    It "may" be cheaper to have someone come out and shrink wrap your boat the first time...but honestly, after you buy the gun and extension, it's way cheaper to do it yourself in the long run. First year start up you'll take a little hit, buying the gun and extension. This is my 2nd year doing my 2022 Moomba Kaiyen by myself. I spent $223.96 buying my materials from Dr. Shrink this year, and 3.5 hours of my time to shrink wrap my boat. That's way cheaper than hiring someone to do it.

    • @HoldFastMarine
      @HoldFastMarine  6 месяцев назад

      People never factor in cost of time. Took you 3.5 hours, it would take me 45 min to an hour. Everything I do I factor in 80$ an hour for my labor, wether I’m doing household plumbing or mowing the lawn. So it really cost you a little over 500$. Whereas I would charge you 380$ to wrap your boat.

    I'm trying to wrap my 32 ft sailboat which is on land in a boatyard. One company wanted 5 to 6 THOUSAND DOLLARS. I never even replied. My mast is still up and I have 6 cables that go to the mast that need to be worked around. Hopefully today this different company will give it a go. I built a plastic pipe structure from 3/4 schedule 40 pipe so I can work under it to sand and paint my upper deck. What model gun do you prefer?

    • @HoldFastMarine

      With a mast up, I’d charge you 3k to wrap your boat. It’s a TON of work cutting and taping the wrap. I prefer the larger BTU like the one I’m using in the video. Wrapping a sail boat with a stepped mast is NOT anything I’d recommend to a first timer.

    I have a paving and sealing business. Older people like to try to seal their lot themselves. I understand lol. But after they buy tools and those crappy buckets from the hardware or box store they spend way more than I charge and they still have to do the work. Not to mention that bucket sealer is terrible for the asphalt. Imma tightwad but I believe I would pay to have one wrapped.

      After 3 yrs (this is my 3rd yr)my stuff payed for it self, I still have 3 yrs worth of materials to use up. After that it will only cost me aprrox 50 dollars a year to shrink wrap mine, I also use it to shrink wrap my stuff at the campground lot we have. I reuse a lot of the banding strap and buckles several times, I reused all the buckles and about 90% of the banding strap from last year.

    Do you staple the cord to the top of the 2x4?

    • @werberderber6209
      @werberderber6209 7 месяцев назад

      I use a wood screw with a flange then put tape over the top, other wise the screw will heat up fast and burn a hole thru the shrink wrap material, I also use old wash clothes to put over the 2(4)x4s where I don't have a cap installed. But yes you can staple the nylon cord, just make sure you use long staples and cover them with tape.

It also helps provide a nice big peak like on the roof of your house so that very little snow will stay on the wrap.

      @@jonathanbond4739 We get pretty good snow loads here too. The biggest problem I have with making wood structures is 99% of the time my customers cut them up or use the 2x4's for a project. I have about 45 guaranteed repeat customers each year and 40 of them don't have the uprights from the year before 😆. It gets costly for me and the customer. But I get your point. Merry Christmas.

      I was a tad worried, had my 21’ boat last year wrapped. Being from northern Mn, lots of snow. But 2x4’s with strapping held up great. I’ve used framing in the past with a tarp for a long time, works pretty good but wrapped is superior. The frame is a pain to deal with. I plan to start my own wrapping this fall, too many toys, jet skis etc. hopefully I get up too speed.

    Less than $3 for a cap and they are reusable. Don't be so cheap, buy three and they will last forever.
    I have Three twenty foot boats. For me to have someone come out and shrink wrap all three was about $1050. I bought the heat gun, a big roll of shrink wrap (200 feet) and every thing else I needed for less than $1300. It costs me about $50 in material to do one boat. $150 for all three and Its not that hard to do. If you have to do it before every winter you will end up saving a lot in the long run if you do it yourself.

    • @HoldFastMarine
      @HoldFastMarine  6 месяцев назад

      So first of all, it’s not being cheap. I can’t buy three I would have to buy 700 of them. And again, nobody ever factors in time time being the most expensive. If you value your time as I do, at $100 an hour, you’re around that 1050. And trust me the purpose of this page is to get people like you knowledge and experience so they can do their own projects.
