HUGE UPDATE AND SALE!: Noises, my instrument with AudioThing is now on 1.1, with lots new features and six new banks. They also have an 35% anniversary sale, don't miss out: www.audiothing.net/instruments/noises/
I've not heard of matrix mixers before - fascinating and I can see how it both makes complex systems easier to visually navigate and also create unexpected and unintended interactions with equipment. I loved the sound of the track that began at 9:35 - the interaction of the noise and tonal elements compressed together was beautiful.
I must say I've been truly inspired watching you and Tim. I really can't wait to get back in my studio when I'm out of the hospital. Thanks Bro for all your know and inspired help 😊😊😊
this is so wild it’s not even funny , watching your videos and actually developing a way better understanding from it , this is the first video that i understood completely and also understand how big this mixer is for your music , it’s the best thing for you hain !!
Sounds ace. Program change is a brilliant idea. My concern was whether you'd hear a pop as it momentarily switched but it doesn't sound like it from these demos. So, yeah!
For years I have used matrices for utilitarian things like intercoms and general signal routing. Never occurred to me they could be used creatively. Leave it ti Hainbach! Helps to think in terms of “sources” and “destinations”.
Feedback generally yields interesting, sometimes-musical results. There are so many ways to produce and to manipulate feedback, especially now with all the routing and programmability options available in music equipment and software, that it opens a whole new world of possibility that did not exist except in the most minimal forms before amplification and signal mixing. The 1960s enjoyed a huge expansion of awareness of the possible creative uses of feedback, and the decades since have slowly added depth and complexity to the available palate of feedback and feedback-related sounds. Thank you for touching on this treasure chest of audio routing and recombination in this gear-introduction video.
I love the work Hainbach does. But, thanks to his serene camera presence, I really want to hear him narrate children's stories. In fact, imagine if he were to both narrate and score Peter and the Wolf!
@@girlinagale God no... His own ambient work. And, mind you, I love dub and downtempo. But with his speaking style? I definitely think his own work would fit better.
I'm into guitar ambient and first I saw Pladask matrix mixer used by Andy Othling in his generative ambient pedal chain, but this mixer is awsome! A specially because of MIDI CC's! Andy allow people to play with his pedals on twitch streams via MIDI... You can only imagine what people could do if they had way to controll his mixer!!! Thanks for sharing this mixer, it's ambient creators dream and it looks amazing!
I just love working with a matrix for voltage or audio. I personally use the Alyseum’s Matrix II in a Eurorack form. It’s a real wonder to work with CV to change patches / routing instantly.
Also it seems like there could be a feature of fading between different presets for some life magic or/and madness! It would be like a new way to vector synthesis but in an analog way. Knowing your power, if you like the idea, you could even possibly reach out to erica synth for a firmware update?..
I had no idea noises had such a huge update, I think it deserves another video. I've had great success sample some noodling of a Rhodes in d dorian, and then scanning through them with noises
Thank you. I’ve been looking at this Matrix Mixer for the past few weeks online trying to decide if I want to drop change on it to add to my studio, where my partner and I collaborate on a guitar, drum, vocals, keyboard and random outboard analog rack and pedal effects. I wasn’t sure if this was for us and more so for the synth crowd, but after watching this, I know now, this is just what I’ve been looking for. If we can use a pedal controller to setup preset patches on the matrix mixer to execute recallable complex effects routing with just a simple pedal stomp, then we are going to be able to be so much more creative. I might even try my hand at setting up some voltage changes with the keyboard to automate key and pitch changes. Tall order for an old dumb drummer. But I’m willing to give it a go. Thanks again.
I'm so happy you covered this cause I thought it seemed cool in concept but didn't exactly know how it worked. if I ever make a large noise system I might get this just for the random feature
omg, I just thought I'd invented the matrix mixer, then searched RUclips and this came up! I was looking for a simple mixer no EQ and lots of aux sends. 😂🤣. I'm going to DIY a passive one and see how it goes. mmmmmm feedback!
I haven’t been using the Matrix mixer for audio processing and routing. For me it has been great for CV like LFO’s being multed and summed. I really appreciate seeing how this can go into more complicated sound design.
"Legendary Shure Auxpander" I never heard them called legendary, but I do love my pair. :) And... "The 'Ha' to ten" is just a lovely mix of deutsch und english.
Nice! I don't have enough gear for a hardware matrix mixer, but have been meaning to check out a few of the options in VCV and keep forgetting! Thanks for reminding me 😉
Thanks for making this video as Erica Synths didn't share any video with alternatives use of the mixer, only found eurorack based videos online. Random patches sound insane! Did u produce their sound (0:22) with line inputs, or did u use eurorack? Thank you :)
I'm wondering, is the Erica thing really a matrix mixer or just a matrix router? The two knobs seem to select rows and columns, so where do you adjust the level??
I kinda envy performance composers… but then again, when I’m approached my remixers and producers, being able to supply them with stems seems kinda vital. Had that issue recently… where I pretty much only had the stereo master and it was really tricky to provide something that could be remixed.
I have Erica and setting it up now. In the Mutron example or other feedback examples is there an input signal? also would you recommend only FX in the matrix or have you had good results with patching sound generators in either side?
Just watched your melotron vid from like 4 weeks ago and just wanted say that pack gave me huge dyimg light vibes. Look it up if you dont know. I feel you could stirck a deal with them for future music.
Matrix mixers are also great for CV, have you explored that Hainbach? The Doepfer A-138m is great for that in euro, it has bipolar/unipolar switches and the ability to offset the voltage! CV feedback is great :)
@@Hainbach I feel the same way! I started with a 6U Clank case (same as yours) filled with dense multifunctional modules and slowly all are getting replaced by Doepfer ones :P Room to wiggle and clear functionality, they really are great.
Quick tip for people who use RME audio interfaces, so if you haven't realized yet, the TotalMix is a matrix mixer :) So if you have enough I/O you can do stuff like this.
@@Hainbach I burned some cash and got myself a HDSPe MADI FX and some converters and now I'm like "I can have EVERYTHING IN THE MATRIX!!!1" :D Seriously, TotalMix matrix mixer is the best thing ever, basically nothing constricts you. And then you have the EQ and dynamics too from the MADI FX card itself.
@@Hainbach Aaand one more tip for the analog side of things, Crest XR20M monitor mixers are dirt cheap nowadays, it is a 20 in - 12 out matrix mixer with EQ on input channels and good preamps (headroom!), these things go like 250eur :) Of course it lacks the fancy features such as patch memory, random etc. as it is fully analog, but atleast your have more knobs to twist than you ever wanted ;)
Lovely mixer and concept (similar to handle routing with patchbay rack) but I don't like MINIJACK!!! That part for me is important because I should change ALL my cables..
gah now these will be even harder to find used... unless a bunch of people buy them and discover they are too daunting... yes yes but them people, then sell them to me for cheap!

That this is coool
Thanks mate!
I don’t think any other being has introduced me to more new musical equipment and/or ideas, thanks for the awesomeness Hainbach

I can confirm that it does not pop or crack when you switch programs. It is smooth, and sounds good.
I learn so much from your videos, and they are extremely well made, Thank you for making these videos.
great video! the matrix mixer is so exciting, i need to bust mine out again

It has three levels per patch point, you adjust with clicking the left knob.
