Just learning of her passing today. Was honored to learn under tutelage for a time at UC. It was always easier for me to follow her brilliant mind when she spoke much better than her writing. I almost forgot all her idiosyncrasies and inflections. She will be sorely missed.
I know exactly what you mean. I just ordered the book Cruel Optimism on recommendation, and thought I'd look up a bit about the author. I thought I knew, you know, enough philosophy to "keep up" but I've had to to pause this video easily a dozen times. Either just to process what I just heard, or simply to look up definitions. I'm still lost, but am now even more excited to dig into this author's corpus.
Listening to this makes me angry, because I have a good vocabulary and I yet cannot understand what they are talking about. It makes me feel as if I am not supposed to understand. Like it's a secret language I am left out of. Why do they talk this way? Also, I wonder if her ideas would make any sense if she were to try to use layperson's terms? Would he have been able to break them down for us mortals to understand?
Rest In Peace, Lauren Berlant.

I'm a very smart guy. This is wokedemic bafflegab.
I can't keep up but I'm captivated nonetheless.
What a hilarious comment

Because it's gobbledygook.
Been following you work since "The Plum Creek Review" at Oberlin College ca. 1978.
A great loss.
" ... do you know what I mean?"

the audio from the videos sucks
You didn't miss much. She is a mumbler and the questioner adds an additional level of confabulation with his three or four weird questions.
