Terminology keeps changing. Anybody can call regenerative now, before it gets licensed. The eater has to get involved. They can find out from the grower what their farminging practices are, for themselves. That's the beauty of the small, family, organic farm model that JM is saying we need more of. It's such a great idea. We already know it works. Sometimes when I'm driving through miles of plowed up, fallow, weedless and dead dirt, I imagine it all in 1-5 acre plots with little houses, intensive little fields growing everything imaginable, shared flocks for grazing- to- soil maintenance, shady lanes with slow speeds for the kids, beavers doing the work to provide wetlands and water for biodiversity and irrigation, gorgeous, flowery little inns and artisan communities. It is totally realistic, and there would be plenty of food and work and culture for everybody. We all value our slow food and our farmer's markets and artisans-- why don't we make this happen? Imagine all the corporate mega farms in small, skilled farms and biodiversity+recreation corridors. There is more than enough land to feed and house everyone organically AND take care of the planet if we scale down and learn the skills.
Beautiful comment Jennifer., Your vision actually brought tears to my eyes, thank you.
@@pauleaton6908Best wishes! Let's do it!
Some organic farms focus on regeneration, but some organic farms are just conventional farms that use organic pesticides and herbicides on one crop that is grown on hundreds of acres.
Thanks for your time and perspectives!
When I tell people that I’m a farmer and they ask me what do I grow, I tell them super soil. Every other consideration is secondary.
This place is so beautiful!!! (the old mill site!) Love that overnight stay option too! Thank you for sharing all of this.
Enjoy I'm happy for you❤
Great conversation. Didn't realize some of the big ag folks were claiming regerative too - interesting...Agreed that small farm revolution is what's happening now and going to keep expanding. Love what you are doing!
JM, YOU DESERVE TO BE VERY PROUD OF YOURSELF!!! YOU ARE SHOWING US HOW TO GROW CROPS IN WAYS THAT NOT ONLY PRODUCE VERY NUTRITIONAL FOODS USING REAL ORGANIC, REGENERATIVE PRINCIPLES, YOUR METHODS ARE VERY PRACTICAL WHICH MAKES YOUR SYSTEMS SO USEFUL & WHOLESOME TO ADOPT!!!!
I'm happy for you JM ...Very nice place you got there. Thank for the video
You're dream is beautiful JM, love these walk n talk vids.
Well done. Such an inspiration to global wellness.
thanks for all!
Poly cover carrots is awesome idea, I had struggles with keeping moisture in this year (super dry here in North AB.) poly cover is brilliant and will be using this in future! Been weighing going into sales, but still dialing in certain processes, so nice to hear I can make it with 1 acre or so....Does your Market Gardener book have planting dates for your location?
I find the theory that we need many small farms and that large scale farming is the problem interesting. There is some truth in it. But i think there is also a big chance especially in big scale farming to go regenerative. Many regenerative agroforestry systems work better on larger scale since extensive farming wont always create an income on a small scale. Of we think about the concepts from Mark Shepard with a lot of treerows and chestnuts that could replace some annual grain crops. These things wont earn you much on a small scale and the work collecting them could feel silly for many of us. But having a big scale farm planting hundreds of hectare to create a very extensive agroforestry system is a big chance for larger scale farms. To improve or maintain their incomes.
Eliot Coleman said once: All organic labels in USA (all created by big companies) are not real organic because they have all included some conventional practices in order to not change to much what they are used to do.
Thanks for the video. I always look forward to them. Where are the hoop houses from?
thanks! The tunnels are from Tessier and the greenhouse is Harnois
Hey JM, does the Market Gardener have your planting dates for your location if so I need to buy it? A lot there 4 sure but that's one thing I do need to know to compare and use as a base for my location!
The new organic will need to show the full suite of beneficial biology and elevated soil carbon levels
AGREE 100% #coastalorganic #realorganic
How can I order your new book on winter farming before release In Oct?
I'm curious how bacteria dominant vs fungal dominant your soil is, whether its early succession or mid to late succession. Have you ever got a soil scientist to look at some samples to determine these factors?
With all the woodchips in the walkways, I would assume, fungaly dominated or a 1:1
What is JM spraying?
which cool backpack sprayer is JM using there?
It's a Petra battery backpack sprayer
What are you spraying?
It's the 500 biodynamic solution

What is the sprayer he's using?

I feel a lot of farmers got burned out by in the organic label, as it was taken over by big ag/hydro. The regenerative hype is just a response to that.
Bringing people to small farms and showing them our work should be the focus imo.
When you read the specifications of organic labels, you can read some surprising practices that you though were conventional practices. In a certain way this is normal since organic labels were created by big companies not small growers. So they created the specifications to facilitate their production.
For me, the regenerative farming brings organic farming a little bit farther, it adds not only a concern for plant health (sometimes soil health) but also for increasing soil fertility year after year. However, as I am concerned I prefer the new concept that many french people talk about, it is call "living soil farming" (www.youtube.com/@VerdeTerreProduction). This concept wants to imitate nature more closely to produce more and healthier. In brief it is: Feed the living in the soil as nature does and the plants will grow faster and healthier.
the thing about "regenerative" is that it's pretty simple: either you're building ecology (so, no/minimal poisons and sterile farmlands) and soil fertility (without adding in copious amounts of mined and composted inputs)... or you aren't. You can't hide behind "OMRI approved" (which there is now effectively an "organic" version of virtually every "conventional" input these days) and "well, my certifier said it was ok" (even though the certifiers have a massive conflict of interest when it comes to policing organics).
The trouble is that it requires farmers (or co-ops) to direct market their products to consumers, and for those consumers to be allowed to see what is happening (you walk onto a farm, you can tell almost instantly whether they're actually regenerative or not) and be educated by the farmers as to why these practices are important and how they can solve many issues in the world today. Over half of my time at markets and when approaching wholesale customers is talking about our production system. I think of it as a sort of educational theatre, with some buying/selling mixed in.
where does a guy get a backpack sprayer like that?!
It's a Petra battery backpack sprayer
I prefer to call it industrial farming rather than conventional.
The problem is Broad acre farming organic farming on a large scale can also depleat the soil and destroy the environment
Industrial farming is the problem
the big farms are only doing the parts that make them more profitable and allow them to use the buzzwords. Or just lying about all of it.
My, your crops look like they’ve taken a hit. Are you in a drought too?
