Truth is, we saw that ballistic missiles can easily overwhelm the defense systems. Many were getting through. Thankfully, the people knew the attack was coming and sheltered in saferooms.
The missile defense system skips the ones headed to unpopulated areas. That can explain some getting through yet relatively little damage.

The air defense systems are capable of predicting the trajectory and only taking out problematic targets. Why waste precious resources and a million dollars on a target that’s going to hit sand?
