    A great episode and most amusing :) On a serious note, steel wire rope wears and may look fine on the outside but degrades internally for numerous reasons. A load test is required on commercial lifts and is worth considering along with a rope schedule.

    The little ferrel on the stranded wires is there to stop all of the strands from breaking when you tighten the connector. I have lots of larger sized ferrels but always run out of the little ones. So I use crimp connectors. I cut the end off and just use the crimp end of it as a ferrel

    • @gorak9000
      @gorak9000 2 года назад +3

      Also you should never tin wires that are going into screw terminals - over time, the solder flows even though it's cold (it's a soft alloy) and your connections loosen up. Tinning wires going into screw terminals is a BIG NO NO

    • @HerbOMatic

      That's a good Idea in a pinch, I don't have those ferrules at all, I need to order a little set of Amazon.

    • @JasonStPierre
      @JasonStPierre 2 года назад +2

      Yes, they are there for fire safety. Stranded & soldered ends deform and due to stranding you get resistance that creates heat then melts stuff. Use ferrules to reassemble...

    Enjoying the series, but I'll be the party pooper who says soldiering stranded wire for crimps or screw terminals isn't the safest route.
    As current passes through, the connection will warm up, the solder will weaken a bit and the connection will loosen a bit, over time that can lead shorts/sparks/fires.
    Currently (ha) a bit of fuss going on in the 3D printing community as cheaper machines do this, and more expensive ones use crimped ferrules.
    Stay safe!

    • @danielcotnoir3363
      @danielcotnoir3363 2 года назад

      That's s low current control circuit, so solder is fine. For circuits with a higher current draw, crimp eyes, spade, splice, etc, would be preferable. Thomas & Betts, AMP, and 3M are excellent products to use.

    • @timderks5960
      @timderks5960 2 года назад

      @@danielcotnoir3363 It may not be a danger, but it's not fine. That's like saying "looking directly in the barrel of a gun and pulling the trigger is fine, as long as it isn't loaded". Sure, as long as you're very sure it's not a problem, but it's still not a good idea to be comfortable with something that could be dangerous in a different situation.
      Also, the current may be low, but that doesn't prevent the solder from deforming over time, resulting in a bad connection. Maybe less dangerous on a low current circuit, but still pretty darn annoying if you're halfway up the elevator and it stops working because the connection was broken due to the solder.

    • @danielcotnoir3363
      @danielcotnoir3363 2 года назад

      @@timderks5960 your gun analogy may be the most ridiculous choice you could have made. I built, installed, and tested traffic systems for the railroad for twenty years, and have been working with electricity for another twenty five years on top of that. Nice build series, but don't tin the wire ends the tin will cold flow and the wire will have a bad connection and eventually the connector will overheat. Use wire ferrules instead.

    • @HerbOMatic
      @HerbOMatic  2 года назад +2

      I'm worried about that now! I'll have to order the ferrules. Thanks Alex!

      @Alexelectricalengineering 2 года назад

      @@HerbOMatic Yes definitely, they are very cheap and good to use in all situation where a stranded wire is clamped directly with a screw, som years ago I was having two switches partially melted because of the tinned wire ends, luckily no fire.!

    I have been watching you since you first reopened the bomb shelter and I do appreciate your humor. It is, for the most part, very refreshing. However, from one subscriber who at least has some wood and metal working experience (had shop in high school and was a collegiate theater stage techie and even did it professionally). So when someone overlooks the prime directive of SAFETY FIRST in any dangerous machine environment, I have to say something. Using the TV tray as a table for a potentially dangerous electric circular miter saw simply for a humorous moment is not only insane...... it does not bode well for you're continued success (not to mention set a bad example for people who don't know any better). I'm frankly surprised I haven't seen any others out there that are mentioning this point also. And for someone who's obviously a very good home shop owner, and your shop is very impressive; your cleanliness and maintenance of your tool and shop area is horrendous. Not cleaning up the metal filings around your band saw and drill press area is frankly embarrassing and not good on the operation of those tools (you realize those filings accumulate into the blade mechanism will eventually cause damage to the band saw, right?). Also your electric grinder needs a new stone put on since the current one is so dramatically off center that it shakes the whole table area when it's on and your metal band saw blade needed replacing last year (you even made a comment about that last month). Suggest you address these soon. SAFETY FIRST should under no circumstances be compromised, even for humor.

      I hear you Rick, I should be a little safer, we all have different thresholds for risk. I don't intend to be an example for anyone. Thanks for watching this whole time!

    [16:22] LOL, I have used a pair of those for almost 35 years.... I think they are great. BUT by this time the stripping holes are pretty worn and sloppy, so I had to by a new pair which reversed the stripping and crimping areas. I hate it. I prefer the leverage I had on the old ones. (the "pull' on the old ones is from near the hand, and not near the end of the tool on the new ones.)

    For pulling wire and sliding on strain reliefs and grommets you can also use some dish soap with a little water, cheaper than lube.
    As for your yellow handle crimp tool, I have used the exact same one for thirty years with zero problems. The best thing about it is the screw cutter portion, great for shortening various screws for electrical work.
    Did you replace skip tooth on laying red?
    Any relation to AVE from the great white north?

      I forgot about the screw shortener! I've used them to shorten machine screws, it works pretty well. I don't know what laying red is, and no relation to AVE except I've seen plenty of tool tear downs from him. Thanks man!
