A neighbour lent me Dark Side in, I think, early '74. I loved it! His copy didn't have the posters (probably on his wall) and I was fascinated by the fact there were no images of the band on the sleeve. It made the music all the more mysterious. Like you, I was into Sweet & Slade etc at the time, but this showed me there was more to music than just the bands I'd seen on Top Of The Pops. The start of whole new adventure...
I enjoyed that Phil, my first time seeing a clip of yours. I did the same thing with my Venus and Mars LP posters snd stickers... glued them to my bedroom wall in New Zealand in 1975 when I was 15.

Lovely review Phil. I personally believe it is very much in the prog category. Prog is a very wide genre and I feel there's enough concept, depth of lyrics and musical dexterity and originality to qualify it. But at the end of the day it's only a genre label and I can totally appreciate that others view it differently.
Hi Chris, thank you for watching, there are certainly some tracks that cross over the PROG lines! I did reach a point in the 80s/90s when I thought I would never want to hear this album again. Now I appreciate it even more. I guess it moves over to popular music in that even people who think they hate PROG, rock ect will find something here to like. It is a perfect album, I just wish I had kept the stickers and posters! Phil

Hi Phil, I agree about it not being a prog album. I think of it in a class of its own, rather like Sgt Pepper. I bought a vinyl reissue and am more than happy with that. I've never had it on CD, doesn't seem right somehow, neither do all the alternative artwork versions, including the Immersion box, but it was great to be able see what's in it, so thank you! The DSOTM box is great. My one complaint is it's impossible to play the blu ray so I have bought the recent blu ray release of the blu ray as well as the Animals blu ray . I also own the DSOTM live cd and a box set containing DSOTM. I have The Wall double cd booklet release + The Wall & Wish You Were Here immersion sets. I have a Piper At The Gates . . . book set and a vinyl box & cd set of The Divisuon Bell and a double LP 45 rpm of Momentary Lapse of Reason as well as the remastered Pulse blu ray etc etc etc Pink Floyd have enough of my money ❤😂 Cheers Phil
Hello Mr. Aston. Hope you are getting better. I do have the SHINE ON box set. Mains albums are there, and or course this one is included. This one and Animals are for me the best albums from these guys. It is really increible the stereo sound, little details behind little details!! The sound of the guy running, heavy breathing. Any Color You Like, the live version. It takes that song into an amazing level. Another thing the idea to have acces to the original 1973 version is excellent. Thank you for these great videos. Great Video ! On Saturday -Just picked up the 2011 Experience Edition 2 CDs. The Wembley 1974 Concert was mixed by Andy Jackson and Damon Iddins. Those marbels, two for your 2 Classic Sports Cars and the other one is for your next Lamborghini, they go in the ashtray ! Great Video !
Had I had been old enough I would have bought the first version on vinyl and that would be the only copy I would own. It is hardly surprising that the album has stayed in the charts for so long, people have bought multiple versions of the same album every 10, 20, 25 year intervals, and now 50 years to which that box set is a whopping £200+ quid! Its no surprise that Gilmour and co have made so much money from one album. I've not too much of an issue of buying box sets but they have to contain something that justifies the hiked costs, I completely agree, the Immersion set should have had the original posters or a cassette version of the album. The cost of the box sets have increased but their value in real terms has diminished, its really quite unfair the way fans are being ripped off. Is this an accountancy decision or is it the bands decision to re-release to milk the fan base for every penny? If Pink Floyd release this album again at a greater hiked price then it will have to contain something in it that is seriously awesome, marbles, a scarf, a pair of socks just wont cut it. You should note that I own a cassette from 1987 (original recording), the 20th anniversary CD, the version of DSOTM as part of the Discography box set, the Immersion box set (unopened) AND a copy of DSOTM performed live in Japan (bought from HMV), so I have five copies of the same album! I wont be buying the 50th anniversary box set unless it comes down in price - sharply. I got all of my stuff from HMV or Our Price, with exception of the Immersion box Set which i got sealed, brand new from Ebay and I paid £50.00.
Interesting idea to approach it as a pop album. Once I've got a reliable definition of "pop" (or any other genre for that matter) I'll give it some thought. Might be a good way to lure in any DSOTM virgins, if there are any. I think it's definitely a "songs" album that's made all the more interesting by the deft devices used to link the songs.

I personally love me marbles… Just a bit gutted that the animals set doesn’t have em … can just imagine clear marbles with a little pig … dog and sheep inside… could have been spectacular….
I consider it Prog Phil. The live Wembley material was released on the 2011 2 CD version plus other Wembley live tracks on the 2011 Wish You Were Here 2 CD version and finally Echoes from Wembley were released on the full Early Years Box-set. Why not just release the complete 74 Wembley live material as one set only. I remember the complaints about the marbles which were not needed. I think if someone has lost their marbles, they may need this set.

Although it may not look like it I have most of my marbles and I do like this set which it why I went for the others as well. It will always be seen a a prog album but it is a collection of songs as well which are very accessible compared with what usually goes for PROG. Phil
