My cousins played this album to me when I was about 14. I was into pop music up until then. I’d never heard anything like it. Made in Japan set me on a course to blues, heavy rock, folk, prog and so much more.

This was such a dramatic experience for me. I had heard “Strange Kind of Woman” and “Child in Time” on the radio. I decided to go see Deep Purpel, June 1972 was right upfront in front of Richie Blackmore .Ian Gillen walk out on stage they go in the intro riff of “Highway Star” Gillen grab the microphone stand throws it at the audience steps on it flies back in his hand then Richie Blackmore breaks in his guitar riff and just all hell breaks loose. They basically perform the whole album “Made in Japan” plus I think “Maybe I’m a Leo” Blackmore was one of the most incredible performances I’ve ever seen in my life , this was about five weeks before they recorded made in Japan. I was so lucky to see Deep Purpel in 1972.I’ve been a fan ever since

Machine Head changed my life too. Prior to hearing that I was a Stones, Beatles, and AM pop rock afficionado. DP brought the harder rock and rhythm and blues to my world. : ) And Made In Japan ... well, that became my favorite album of all - and still is.

This is such a landmark release in so many ways. Not just as one of the greatest live albums ever but also the fact that it put Japan on the map as a vital and unique hub for rock music. I suspect many of us have Japanese imports in our collections plus an appreciation of the latter's music scene. Purple really blazed a trail here.

Phil,we are cut from the same cloth, I collect DP stuff and Dalek's too.😅
This is the one, fave live record, fave band and lineup, tho loved the Mk3 lineup too.
Bought all of these versions and still enjoy.
I also liked Lizzys Live & Dangerous,
BOCs On your feet or on your knees and Ashbone Wish' Live Dates, all very good, but that special golden wrappered double was the Wonkas golden ticket of Vinyl to me.
The overall sound and recording flawed me then and still does to this day.
And to think it was a cheap filler in their eyes.
These for me are the definitive song versions.

I can state without any doubt whatsoever, that Made in Japan has been and still is the most significant record in my entire collection (of well over 2,000 albums and counting of all genres and styles- rock, jazz, metal, funk, classical, country, etc, etc). It has informed all of my musical tastes and choices since I first heard it in 1973. MIJ is the absolute #1 album I would take to a desert island....no other record comes as close.

Hi Laura, it captures this lineup of the band at the height of their powers. You can tell they are taking risks, it sounds chaotic but so exciting at the same time. Looking back through the lens of time there is some blues and even R&B amongst the grooves, it’s heavy metal with soul, passion and it still delivers whenever I play it. Phil

@@NowSpinningMagazine Yes, that's what I especially love about 70s rock: the improvisation. Blackmore is one of my favourite guitarists, since he always improvises and loves that whammy bar. I have no idea how he kept the Strat in tune with the stock whammy bar on the Strat, since there were no Floyd Rose back then.
LOL at horrifying your dad whilst using his record player. I did that many times and finally was sent to the basement when I got my own record player at 16. That way I could listen to music without annoying my parents.

How you described each track on this brilliant album reflects the way I would have described it. You are right about Blackmore, live, there are often a lot of missed notes in his solos, but it didn't seem to matter, a lot of experimentation going on, it was exciting to listen to. Great reviews. Hi mate, nice hearing you reflect back to the 70,s when I was also, although none of us knew it, fortunate to be hearing as teenagers so much great new music from so many great new bands. I also fondly remember recording with one the original portable cassette players songs from the Radio, usually Radio Carolin and how my 4 year old sister would run into my room saying listen to this and that this was "Yes - Roundabout" and although she passed far to early of cancer I have such moments clear in my precious memory banks. For my 14th Birthday she bought me Deep Purple in Rock but also made me sit and listen to every verse of McGooghans Blues by Roy Harper. Made In Japan was the first time I heard Purple Live and what a sound and I think the same year I saw that lineup play in Edinburgh and even ended up on stage after the show to help pack away the equipment (a tactic by the roadies to hit on the 2 very pretty 17yr old schoolgirls that I was there with) anyway after asking I was allowed to strap on and strum Ritchie Blackmores Strat that was still on its guitar stand - that I also wont forget and damn why didnt I have a photo taken of that as I had a camera with me BUT often you dont know how special or unique some moments are in our lives as they can happen and pass so quickly. Anyway thanks for the good review.

Iam sorry to say that you are wrong about the SOTW recording date. It is from the first show.
And as mentioned earlier; if you take a look at the footage from the 17. Aug. Blackmore is actually smiling across the stage, which was not his normal way of behaving when his was unsatisfied with his playing. In my opinion it was just another of these small altering-the-original things, that always makes you excited so see and hear the next show. Eg.: Playing "God save the Queen..." as an intro to his interpretation of Beethoven's fifth or "Jingle bells and countless others.

It sucks that they didn't film those nights. I always heard Blackmore never liked being filmed, but I think if they would have known how good this turned out, they might have put more into it.

I remember when video came out in the early 80s and the California Jam was released on VHS. All my mates were thinking ‘was Made In Japan filmed?’ Unfortunately the answer was no. It would have been the best live video of all time. Phil

They made a mistake including The Mule and Spacetrucking . Speed King , Fireball and Black Night wouldve made more sense and made it a better album . 3.5 out of 5 is a realistic score for it

Thank you for watching and sharing your personal thoughts on this classic live album. It is probably impossible for me to extract the 14 year old that first heard this in 1973. These were formative years and a track that took up a whole side and took me on a journey where I could not really work out what and who was playing what just made it mind blowing. I can imagine someone hearing this for the first time might either hate it or live it. I know Martin Popoff has very little time for it! For me it is just a 10/10 masterpiece. Phil :)

Best album ever. I have owned so many copies. Original vinyl is best. Problem with the remasters is post production e.g applause of highway star overlaps start of child in time. Shirley mix is awful. Cant listen to it.

Still excited like a 10 year old on Xmas eve when the power of Highway Star kicks off on MIJ. What an album. The Who live at Leeds is the only live album to come anywhere near it.

Hi Phil, Another great passionate review, of what is in my opinion is ' The Greatest Live Album of All Time ' no other live album comes close. Yes there are a lot of excellent live albums out there, but nothing touches this. Like you say Phil ' It's Dangerous '
