I worked at a nursery in Japan teaching the babies through immersion, and it was so fun to see their language acquisition. Sometimes they mixed English and Japanese if they didn't know the English word, like "up して" for "pick me up" and "goodnight いやだ" at naptime when they didn't want to sleep haha. One of the little girls started thinking my name was Hello because everyone said that whenever they saw me XD
I came here to learn how to teach kids a language that you don't speak but than I was impressed how you were able to share with us all this information while entertaining your child at the same time 😊 good job mama ❤
Yes to all of this! As adults, we try to be perfect in everything we present to the child, and that can end up inhibiting us. You don't need to perfectly speak the language to introduce it! My co-teachers in Korea had the same struggle. They refused to speak English while teaching it because they feared it wasn't good enough (it was pretty damn good) so by the time I arrived as the native teacher, the older kids were past that sponge period and really struggled to catch on. Any exposure will be better than no exposure!
I’m Swedish but I live in Japan and just had a daughter 3 months ago. So far I’ve only spoken to her in Swedish but she’ll obviously have to learn Japanese eventually as well (not that she actually speaks any language yet, just random babbling). Learning together sounds like a really great idea actually - especially since while I do speak Japanese, I’m not fluent. Will definitely give this a try!
This is such an amazing and motivating video! I love it. It shows that anyone can do it if you just put a little time and effort. Weekly then daily. It does get hard eventually when trying to keep going and maintain it but its so rewarding. Thank you for posting!!!
"This video makes me happy because it shows that my child can become bilingual. I speak Portuguese, but I also understand English very well. I would like the same for my child. All I do is expose my child to English songs and sometimes Peppa Pig videos. I hope it works."
We've been speaking to my son in only Chinese for almost 2 years, and I just recently realized that he's learning Chinese well, but doesn't know any English (my mother tongue)! We probably should have done "One Parent One Language" from birth, but anyways, about a week ago I started speaking to him only in English. It's a little challenging to make the switch now! He's starting to understand some English, but he's not speaking it a lot. But I'm sure he'll catch on before too long. I guess I'm just concerned that growing up in America, he'll be more interested in English, and in the future he'll forget about Chinese. So I wanted to give him a good foundation in it. I guess if I see that happening, I can just switch back to speaking to him in Chinese again! I'd love for him to learn Spanish too. My Spanish is rusty now, but I can read a book. Maybe I should get some kids books, and read them to him sometime before he turns 6. Another great method is to hire a babysitter who will speak to him only in the target language. Bella Devyatkina is a Russian girl who speaks several languages, and she learned through babysitters.
I love that you’ve focused on Chinese! Honestly, from my experience with multilingual families, English often becomes the dominant language even when a different language is spoken exclusively at home. So honestly, some English at home does help but, in most situations, the children will be fine even if you never do! ❤️🩹
My second language is Spanish. I wast taught.. both, languages at a very early age. I was months old when, i started speaking Both languages. Both Sides of My Family Speak Both languages.
Wow!!! I’m shocked how a non native Japanese teach their child Japanese! I’m bilingual Japanese and Spanish (and another ethnicity with our own language in Japan), and my husband is from Türkiye, so there’s Turkish too, I hope we can teach our child those languages ❤️ your child is smart and sweet!
Thank you very much for this informative video. I plan on teaching my kids 3 languages, and this gave me a perfect picture of how to go about it. I have subscribed to your channel so I can learn more 😀
Thank you for your video. I am french, my partner is italian, I do not speak italian fluently yet, but we speak english between each other. Expecting our first ever child… I want he or she to speak french, but english at the same time I’m scared it’ll be too overwhelming for them 🥺
That was fantastic! I’m pregnant with my first baby and we’re Brazilian. My husband and I were talking about raise her as a bilingual child. So he’ll be talking only in Portuguese and I’ll be talking in English. This is called OPOL, I guess. However, I’m an English teacher and a sign language interpreter in Brazil. I’ve heard that newborns can communicate with us using sign language. So what’s is your opinion about that? My husband just speak Portuguese. And about English I need to study a lot about it, to be consistent and also creative to do some activities with her. And to learn baby vocabulary because I’ve been studying English since 2005 and I’ve never saw those kind of things in my entire life. I hope that I can do my best for her 🤰🏻💖
How was your experience? I'm pregnant too and would like to do this immersion to my young baby. I live in São Paulo. Maybe we can "swap stickers" 😂 What do you think?
Great video 😊 What if for example: 1 parent speaks French the other parent English and they all live in a country where they speak Italian Is it too much for the baby?
Thank you so much for the video, it’s brilliant. I was wondering whether the parent should strictly speak that language they’re trying to teach in their everyday life or just when they’re teaching ? I’m sorry it’s a bit if a silly question.
No such thing as a silly question! And ideally if one parent is going to speak one language and another parent a different language then yes they should try to stick to it. But you can always do the indoor/outdoor rule where you speak one language inside the house and another language when outside the house. If you are learning a second language alongside the child then that is also a totally different scenario
Thank you 🙏, my son is now one years old and I was unaware of when was a good time to start. I thought we would confuse him by starting both at the same time.
Thanks for your sharing you knowledge. How about for my case. I am a full time mom of 15months old. I speak filipino but we lived here in canada. My husband and his family speak filipino all the time. What i am doing now is i schedule language exposure like monday-wednesday English then the rest of the week filipino. My husband is always out-of-town. It looks like I am a single mom trying to teach her kid bilingual. Appreciate your reply
Hey how did it go? Did you stick with that routine? Did the child speak in target languages? Because I'm currently trying 4 languages and divided it in days
Hello! I loved your video! My son understands two languages arabic and Spanish but I’m worried that is time to introduce English for childcare and future classes and I’m afraid I’m mixing many languages while speaking to him already. I don’t know I’m which one to focus because the reason he knows many languages is because both side of the family don’t know the others language and not everyone know English. So I feel maybe is too much pressure for him😢 that’s my thought tho, because he doesn’t seem to care much 😂
Mixing languages is pretty common when their brains are still developing! It doesn’t mean he or she won’t learn to separate them. It’s kind of like walking. At first it takes forever for them to get moving but then they do, after lots of time! Consistency is key. ❤
Im a single Parent how can I manage that my baby or child will not get confused when only one person speaks two languages. How do they know to hear the difference between these two languages?
I was wondering if a child can be taught the same word in 3 different languages at the same time. I was planning to play 3 different languages toys one after another. After child say the word in one language then I will play a talking toy in another language for the same word and so on. Thank you
Hi. Thank you for your video. I was wondering if you have any advice for stay at home guardians who are bilingual. I speak spanish and English and speak to my daughter both. I do english in the morning and spanish in the afternoon and sometimes both throughout the day. What would be the best approach? I would also like to incorporate a new language for both of us. Thank you in advance

Agreed, perfect isn’t important! It’s all about exposure and trying, anything is better than nothing 👏 👏
So important learning other languages even if you don’t know them, helps both parents and kids appreciate other cultures! Great video loved the tips
It really is, and RUclips is an amazing way to learn for free! We can’t wait to do more videos showing a typical lesson

That’s amazing how quickly your baby student learnt!!! I’d love to try that
All babies are incredible and kids too! Little sponges just waiting to learn 📖

Try talking to your child as-well. As this will give your child, someone to communicate with, and make the language stick more. Hope this helps. :)

Research shows the babies won’t be confused!! A lot of people don’t know this though

What you think of habbi habbi books? Too expensive?
I enjoy listening to Australian accents hahaha

I am trying to teach my child my dialect but I can’t find any book in our dialect. What could be alternative?
Maybe make one!! Print off pictures from the internet, buy a photo album and write your dialect in it and use that to teach!
Smart baby 😊
Some days haha we can’t wait till it’s full sentences though!
@@mixed_and_nerdy it'll get to that point probably sooner than you think 😁
excuse , how about if the parents speak another language but not in fluent level, is that will give the bad impact in babys language growth ??
obviously..
Instead of having one parent speak one language, can my wife and I bothspeak two languagesto the baby.
Most definitely you can! Their brains are able to soak it all up :)
can i teach baby my native language and english also? my husband will speak arabic .. can kids learn 3 languages ?
Im doing my native and a non native language plus english
Most definitely you can! It helps to have a structure and plan, but for sure, you can do it!
Good video
🙏 thanks! And thank you for watching too ❤️
My son is 6 now 😩
@YuvanshaPillai-er6lc I'm going to start with both of my boys
You're Australian, your husband is American. No need to pander to race.
