AGI Lecture: The Dragon and The Eagle - Must the World Choose?

- In this lecture, a delegation from the Harvard Kennedy School (HKS) joined Eric Li from Chengwei Capital, as well as Dr Brian Wong from the Department of Philosophy, HKU, to discuss the political and economic climate between China and the US.
Karen Dynan, Professor of the Practice of Public Policy from HKS, initiated the discussion by outlining the primary economic challenges the world faces, such as high debt ratios and consistently high interest rates. She argued that these factors could hinder growth, limit governments' ability to address issues like climate change, and prevent lower-income countries from benefiting from technology, ultimately worsening income inequality.
Eric shared his perspectives on China's transition in industrial policy, stating that the country is experiencing a necessary but painful shift to move higher up in the global value chain. However, he acknowledged that this transition is causing uncertainty, and the direction remains unclear to many. Anthony Saich, Daewoo Professor of International Affairs from HKS, concurred with Li about the ambiguity surrounding China's economic transition. He further observed that China's political system has become more top-down and centralized in recent years, which also affects economic decision-making.
Edward Cunningham, Director of Ash Center China Programs and of the Asia Energy and Sustainability Initiative, HKS, offered a more optimistic view, emphasizing the potential for cooperation between the US and China in new energy and sustainability sectors. Lastly, Dr Brian Wong addressed Hong Kong's role in the turbulent international geopolitical climate, suggesting that the city should leverage its unique status as a bridge between the US and China.

The difference between a talker and a doer, eric has real job apart from talking, thus his wording and language is emphatic and strong. Love it.
Dr Brian Wong is the citizen, enlightened, out spoken, unapologetic, wants to be part of the story, I admire.
He knows who he is and hope he will infect others with his enthusiasm.

I would love to see more of Dr. Brian Wong to share his perspectives on global and China issues in similar forums, and as always, Dr. Eric Li too. Saich was fair. Pretty good moderation throughout, credit to Prof. Tang. Both Cunningham and Dynan looked a bit tired over their busy schedules.
So happy that Dr. Lee stopped being a "venture capitalist" and instead became a "venture socialist with Chinese characteristics." He understand that The People are suffering and that a return to communist ideals as exemplified by President Xi is imperative to alleviate our stagnation.

Since 1949, even way back before Xi’s administration, Chinese has been the centralized government or centralized system. Otherwise, there would be no such a great achievement as right now in China.

I'm an absolute fan of Eric Li's. But chairman Xi put it even more nicely, "modernisation is not westernization". The Westen Interpretation of this, à la Kevin Rudd, is Xi's Marxism and Leninism (he speaks good Chinese, but has no insights). In contrast, Eric's interpretation is that the West achieved modernization not through the modern western values, but through e.g. colonialism. And china needs to chart its own way. 👍

I got a kick out of the comment that China doesn't need a Constitution like the one possessed by the US. Which means China doesn't need an underlying Rule of Law either, right? Just have arbitrary legal judgements based upon "dynamic" interpretations of legal contracts based upon shifting power struggles. Granted, the US is showing similar moves towards arbitrary selective enforcement of the law with administration in the White House. But ultimately, if human and legal rights are "bestowed/revoked" based upon whoever happens to be in power, and therefore, are not unalienable, exactly for who does modernization benefit? A higher quality of economic life is meaningless without personal liberties. It's just a fancier form of political serfdom.
