“Too nice” might not be a good name for it. It’s just different values/ priorities. If I just want to learn but I have no interest in competing, a more casual instructor sounds like a great time.

I'm new to it so I only give lesson to my riding friends to get feedback and while I correct them as much as I can, I'm too nice and I'm totally doing positive reinforcement with my "studens" 😂
If I reward a horse for every effort, why wouldn't I do the same with riders?

where therapeutic riding instruction is concerned, there's really no such thing as "too nice". many therapeutic riding students are not equipped (physically or psychologically) to be able to work with the "mean" instructor. one can be firm while still being kind.

“The Meanie” was like my first trainer and I hated her, I don’t know if she meant it or not but we just didn’t connect. To be honest, I cried each lesson cause her normal voice was yelling and I’m unable to take that, and the way she criticized was horrible for me, and I just couldn’t take it. Once she hired another trainer it just went uphill, and we just went on from there. I have a different trainer now but the person she hired just got me through everything, even my first fall.

She is super kind, not too kind that she just does random things when I mess up and say it’s fine, she corrects me and helps me on what im struggling with, she listens to me and if I don’t think I can do a jump, she will either lower it if it’s too high or comfort me. She can take a joke as well, which is always nice so I can laugh when I mess up and she will laugh and she is just amazing.

I’ve lessoned with a “meanie” trainer a couple of times but she would only get like that with the kids that didn’t listen after she corrected the same thing multiple times in a row or put themselves in danger. I recently did a private with her and she yelled “LEG” to correct me while I was jumping for the first time in 5+ months so I was a little rusty and delayed in my aids. I fixed myself immediately and she literally said “oh my god that sounded mean, I forgot that you’re sensitive to my tone and I don’t have to yell to teach you.”

My first trainer can't even be called a trainer, everything that I knew I learned through the books I read. I literally just (incorrectly) trotted in circles and did the occasional basic pattern, and believed that I must be a terrible rider since I didn't even learn how to canter in nearly 5 years. The next one was even worse, because on top of being useless, she was also mean as hell. But now, after nearly a decade of no riding at all, I got back in the saddle in october, and I'm already leagues better than I ever was. My trainer is a godsent. she makes sure to teach and correct without being mean, praises you when needed and she only scolds you if you are being unsafe or bother others.

    • @Kat-mu8wq
      @Kat-mu8wq 3 года назад

I wouldn't worry about it. I've been riding 22 years (since I was 6) and I absolutely hate cantering. Haven't done it for close to a decade now. 🤣 I've never been able to sit a canter either, I either bounce and slam down on the horses back or I have to lean forwards. 🤷‍♀️ very few horses i feel safe cantering on, and majority of them are now dead.. It was a long time ago..

Two years ago, my trainer got really mad at all of us (I was in a group lesson) and she was being the mean trainer. It was a really rough lesson. She by one point made us all stop and started telling us we weren't working hard enough. Infact two of the girls I was riding with were crying by the end of the talk. She said that only one of us were working hard and she wouldn't say who that was. But it's been two years since that and she's still my teacher. And she's the best teacher I've ever had.
    Woah. That was long.😂😂

My sister had the "too nice" instructor once (she was looking for a new barn to take lessons after a move). Immediately knew she would learn nothing at that place and found one with a "mean-ish" instructor (pulls zero punches but is just as quick to let you know when you get it right as when you get it wrong). I started riding there when I moved back home after college and I LOVE it. The brutal honesty did take a little getting used to, but I've learned a lot.

I took lessons at an Arabian farm, saddle-broke 6-7 year-olds. Got my favorite quotes from my trainer there:
    - "I don't know - you're going to ride him, not me!" (on "lunging before trail ride")
    - "By the way, this is the first time he's out since last fall..." (five minutes into a trail ride in spring, with BO)
    - "Now, when he bolts next time..." (ice sliding off the arena roof)
    - "If she runs away with you, remember, circles are your friend!"
    - "Be careful!" (double checks girth before going outside for cool-down walk)
    and the best one:
    - "He's so much calmer with you than with *assistant trainer*!"

My first trainer was definitely the ‘ Too Nice ‘. She didn’t seem to have much discipline, and didn’t tell us much. She was also distracted and wouldn’t help me with the girth when I needed it. She told me to use the pommel to rise in trot, which resulted in me not being able to steer my horse. Only on the day she wasn’t there, when Michelle (My current trainer) had to step in, did I learn to trot. She didn’t even tell me to push my weight into my heels or the stirrups. Then when I switched to Wednesdays with Michelle, I started getting better at riding. Michelle is perfect for me, with a balance of calm yet strict, and has over 40 years of experience. She’s honestly perfect, which I’m very glad to have.

I have had combinations of the disinterested and the meanie, but the rest of my instructors have been amazing!!! As an instructor myself, I started out a bit like the unprepared and the newbie before I found my feet and got into the swing of things of what each of my students and horses needed (like grabbing crops/whips or knowing what to set up based off of what they needed to work on). I also got much better at seeing diagonals and cantering leads right away. To ride it is one thing, to see it is another!!! Overall though, now I am a healthy balance of fun, encouragement and praise, and education!!!
As a tennis coach, I am definitely the too nice one. Lol. that's a bit different though, because over time the kids improve their eye hand coordination and swing. I do get after my students though for the things they need to work on, but I definitely overpraise lol.

My instructor is kind of a combination beacause sometimes he has to answer the phone calls and he also reminds me to fix my mistakes like keeping the hands close to each other. He also teaches me how to take care of the horse that I ride. She is a mare that I leased from him and he tells me to sometimes take it slower with her because she is old. After that, we need to untack her and we do that together so I can learn. Then he reminds me the safety steps with the horse. For example: when I put her into her stable box to make sure that she doesn't spook at anything. So he is a really good instructor.🎉

My trainer I would describe as the diamond. Super knowledgeable and able to push you at the right time and teaching a lot. We have to wear a comtec when riding because her voice isn't very loud. But she speaks in the most calming way that makes you feel great. I'm so happy I found my barn because I love it!

My barn manager brings in a different trainer occasionally and shes a “meanie.” I had to ride her horse in the lesson and every time something went well it was because he was a good horse, any time something went bad she would say “that was terrible, you know that was your fault right?” One girl even told the barn manager she was scared the trainer was gonna yell at her. Shes a nice lady but doesnt seem to know the value of a compliment 😂

Mine is super nice and is an eventer (which I want to do as well). Only time she's lost patience is when my horse was acting up on one end of the arena (does it sometimes), and just grabbed a helmet, jumped on and started getting my horse to behave again (he started speed trotting out of the arena). Super grateful to have her!
