    Another info :
The Chaliyar River is approximately 25 kilometers from the disaster site, which means that the full and partial body parts of the victims may have traveled a significant distance through the river. This highlights the severity of the disaster and the potential impact on the surrounding environment and communities downstream.
The fact that body parts have traveled 25 kilometers through the river suggests that:
    1. The force of the landslide or flood was extremely powerful, causing widespread destruction and displacement of human remains.
    2. The river's flow and currents carried the remains a considerable distance, making recovery and identification more challenging.
    3. There may be a significant impact on the river's ecosystem and water quality due to the presence of human remains and other debris.
This information emphasizes the importance of a thorough and sensitive recovery effort, as well as environmental monitoring and support for affected communities.

It is not landslide as usual. There is a cloud burst at the top of the hills cluster feeding Chaliyaar and Kabbini river as well as small Kuttiyadi river located in the SW slope of whole mountain complex. Topsoil not able to hold together on such slash of heavy rain fall just in few hours. Uttarkhand tragedy, last year HP Jhelum river tragedy, etc are result of huge cloud burst. This year SW monsoon pattern hold only high altitude rain clouds as akin to summer rains against normal low altitude graudual rain giving black clouds. This is the reason. thanks

The place is classified as unsuitable for living conditions. Disaster management reports have classified the area as high-risk, unsuitable for habitation, homestays, or resorts. A landslide occurred there once in the 1980s, and again in the 19, 20. Despite this, people continue to acquire land and build homes, while many estates have been converted into resorts and homestays. A collector once intervened to stop these activities but was transferred shortly after. Politicians and real estate developers are aware of the risks but prioritize profits over people's lives.

"World Agroforestry (ICRAF) has intensively studied landslides in Southeast Asia.
‘High rainfall events on wet soil on hill slopes can trigger “failure” in planes of weakness in the soil profile which leads to movement of soil’, wrote lead researchers Meine van Noordwijk and Kurniatun Hairiah in one piece of work. They stated, however, that trees can prevent that movement of soil and stabilize slopes. Hydrologically, trees intercept and transpire water, reducing water in the soil. Mechanically, tree roots anchor the soil (a factor of rooting depth) and bind it (a factor of root density).
‘Tree roots do play a real role in providing mechanical coherence of the soil profile; it makes sense to expect that tree planting will, in the longer term and once the young trees have established root systems, reduce risk of landslides’, said the researchers."
('Trees can reduce landslides, say experts in ecosystem-based disaster risk reduction', World Agroforestry, 17 October 2019)

A 2022 study published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health on deforestation in Wayanad district showed that 62% of the green cover in the district disappeared between 1950 and 2018, while tea plantation cover rose by around 1800%, leaving less forest to keep muddy hills stable. In addition, Kerala's hilly regions have slopes of more than 20 degrees; these two factors may contribute to the increased risk of flash floods during heavy rains.[11] According to the Geological Survey of India, a total of 19,301 km2 (7,452 sq mi), or 49.7% of Kerala's total area, falls within landslide-prone areas.[12]

This disaster is primarily because of the illegal resorts being constructed breaching every rule. Now these resort owners are buying land in Karnataka Kabini area to build more such illegal resorts. This must be immediately stopped.

    Chief minister should resign ✍️
    becoz
    It's 500 FAMILES😰😠
    How many lives......!!!!!!!!!!😠
Kerala is state risky through water and land sliding is happening always
    Measures should have taken before
    or
Some CAUTION alerting people to move immediately
    or
Rescue by knowing that water is flooding more through any CC tv by fixing cameras away in all Waterfalls and noticing could make ATLEAST RESCUE ALERT quick and save lives
    What is this
    Kerala is at risk ofcourse
    Precautions where?
    Preventive measures where?
State has to give importance to all lives or don't make them live near Waterfalls
Let them come to other states where they have atleast less risk to live

In fact, it has not shocked anyone who knows things. Something worse was expected to happen - if rains consolidated to serious magnitudes. Please let the public know ::. Something similar is in store (God Forbid) for Mullapperiar region too. IT IS PREDICTED, OR WARNED WITH LINES OF CAUTION. "Wisdom cried in the street and Noman regarded it - particularly the greedy and the greedy authority called Kerala govt. Thomas gave the warning, along with Gadgil. Some q4 years ago. Also listed, Dos and Don'ts.

Very unfortunate incident. Highlights the need of the government of Kerala to study the environment and envision danger points and take remedial action in construction of suitable water flow ducts to allow rain water to safely be diverted away from settlements, and into rivers downstream safely.
