Yakima Canutt was my great uncle. I got to see him for the last time in 1979. Because of his illustrious career, he was not around alot "in his west Hollywood home". My mom, her maiden name of Marcia Canutt, told us "we are going to see uncle yak" in Hollywood. We were very young at the time and so, we visited him and he told us his cool stories. I think his short term memory was going because only thing he talked about was the past but was confused when we asked him what he does today well into retirement. His awards were amazing as well as his perl laced Italian riffle collection in the spare room. Update.

A truly great man. I can watch "Stagecoach" over and over again. What happened to his sons after "Ben Hur"?

Enjoyed your story. Your Great Uncle and my Great Uncle Herman Hack were in the movies together ! Just watched "The Man from Utah" last night and Yak & Herman were sitting at a table together ! My Mom's maiden name is Hackenjos which is Herman's last name, he just shortened it to Hack. Made it easier to say and spell :-)

@@stevejones4235 We never got to see Tap or Joe. Mom said for some reason they never got along. Joe passed away a few years ago. Tap also passed away. I tried to contact one of the grand children no reply.

I remember most of the stars from the old black and white movies ...Sunset Carson was one of my many favorites, who could posibly have just one favorite, and my very conservative Christian Mother from southeast Alabams could not resist Sunset Carsons deep Southern drawl when he would say "Yes Ma am....I have a number of the large hardback books of the old cowboy actors....

The joke Canutt pulled on Wayne was when they had first met on the set of the Shadow of the Eagle, Wayne's first serial for Mascot. Wayne had been told that Canutt, although a good stuntman, was the "stooge" for Mascot president Nat Levine. Wayne was told to watch his comments and his behavior around Canutt, who would report it to the front office. Once Wayne was trying to sneak a drink on the set, he caught Canuttt watching him closely. Wayne started to fight Canutt but was told it was a joke.

Sunset mentions Charlie King several times and yet King only made one picture with him, his first one "Code of the Prairie" King usually hung out in the saloons of PRC where he invariably rubbed elbows with Buster Crabbe.
