    We *might* get through it a little faster because we're playing daily. We didn't plan it that way exactly, but we also didn't plan to be confined to the house for a couple months either.

    Gloomhaven Helper changed our game.
    We houseruled that you take both cards when you level up, but can only take one from each level 2-9 into a scenario. That way the limits still apply to the cards in play, but keeps open the deck building options.

    • @TheMeepleMarathon
      @TheMeepleMarathon  3 года назад

      I do like that upgrade limit option.

      What two cards are you talking about? I can't find any mention of this in the rules.

      @Rezic you get new cards when your character levels up

    When you talked about house rules, I was like "Don't say summons, please don't say summons!" and then you talked about picking cards when levelling up, I was so relieved! It's not a rule that we would implement, because it makes replaying a character less interesting, but if you almost know for certain you'll never play a character again, I can get behind this.
    But then, of course... you had to mention summons xD

    I own all the things for this game, and still prefer tabletop simulator, it's so much faster and you can save your game (and flip the table lol)
    I didn't want to, but its so hard to get people to commit to coming over and then you have to leave the table set up unless you want to spend a long time setting up. Definitely a year worth of content in this game though.

    My house rule: Characters are allowed to switch between their higher level ability cards up to the prosperity level of gloomhaven. So you can switch the lvl 2-9 cards however you want. I think its fair. Sometimes you thought you picked the right card for your comp but its turns out terrible. Currently at prosperity level 5, its cool to see the other abilities in action and learn more combos.

    Such a good video! (We also fudged some of the rules-specifically that summon rule.) Thank you!

  • @marcelohernandez31

    We just began the base game and our house rule to start was to be given two random characters and picking one from them THEN PICKING our retirement goal. Basically flipping the rules. It doesn't feel like we're breaking the game.

    But honestly, I think one of the number one tips I would give to everyone starting with Gloomhaven is do NOT houserule summons. Yes, I had to learn the hard way that they can die really fast. Yes, it can be frustrating sometimes. But in the end you are playing a game and you want to be challenged, and personally I feel like learning when and where to summon is way more rewarding than just simply mind controlling them (and by doing so rendering certain character abilities completely useless).
    I feel like I am kind of the Defender of the Faith on this one. Having played a summon focused class myself (I think one of my favorite ones I have played, and I am talking about a human sized character ;) ) and having been in a team with two different characters of another summon class I can assure you that some of the most memorable moments came from situations where summons clearly did not do what we wanted them to do.
    Also you have to see them for what they are: If a summon attacks twice and then dies it can still be an "Attack 6, add a condition and absorb a hit" Lost card. Having team mates who adapt their playstyle to your summons can make it even better.
    So to sum up: I see why people would decide that houserule (especially early into the campaign). However, not controlling them is more fun (as in funny) and more fun (as in rewarding). Controlling them breaks some game mechanics (e.g. ability cards, balance) and just feels too strong. Also, what's the point of playing with summons? Why not just play as the summon then (more true for classes with few but strong summons than classes with many weaker ones)?

    • @Ryhamz
      @Ryhamz 4 года назад +1

      While you have a great argument here, I can answer a few of your questions:
      "what's the point of playing with summons?"
      I think what everyone is getting at is that they'd like to roleplay an intelligent companion that knows how to do more than moster focus. Think R2D2.
      "But in the end you are playing a game and you want to be challenged".
      Not everyone cares about having this element. Some could be into this for the lore or some other reason! There isn't one true perspective :)
      I can see this really messing up your experience if you are looking for challenge, while you have a summoner and the mechanic is integral to every scenario for you.

    • @snarsnik222
      @snarsnik222 2 года назад +1

      I know I'm late but I wanted to share our house rule for summons: you get to control them for the amount of turns equal to the monster card level minus your level than they act like monsters. So if the card is unlocked at level 2 and your character is level 4 you get to control his first 2 rounds.
      This reflects your character becoming a better summoner as he/she gets stronger while also not making summons OP.

      Was going to comment the very same thing! We recently had a Spellweaver who opened the door and did exactly as was described in the video; stepped back and let the Brute tank it. The skeletons rushed past the Brute to attack them both, eventually leading to the Spellweaver exhausting before the scenario end, as they had to toss two cards to negate damage.

    I really enjoyed your video. Printed out the Scenario list, that will come in handy. I set up a table and have two shelves against the wall. So I'm playing and have everything at my disposal in front of me. All the items are in the plastic containers and the map tiles are in an alphabetical file holder. I only have one house rule....1. No house rules aloud. :)

    I asked for some help on Reddit for fun house rules to make it more fun, some people on the thread literally told me to sell the game. Some board game communities are really toxic. My cousin and I put in place some house rules similar to yours. Summons seemed really under powered and would just aimlessly get killed. I also agree with your level up spells.

      It's your game. If you wanted to play with it taped to the wall it shouldn't matter to anyone else. You paid for it, so you should have fun with it. I'm sure Isacc Childress is not going to come knock down your door and take your game because you didn't follow the rules word for word. Good for you.

    I think the living bones will go through his friend to get to its focus (brute) if its movement is enough to do so. So that way one monster does not really block the doorway. Am I wrong?

    • @TheMeepleMarathon
      @TheMeepleMarathon  3 года назад

      No. It all depends on how much movement they have. Living bones tend to be slow and have low movement numbers. If they don’t have the extra movement to move through their ally then they will jam up.

    Regards step 6, I think the rules cap the number of upgrades you can buy. I think it’s against that characters level. I remember I missed that rule and had to remove a couple of card upgrades until I met the requirements :-(

    • @bodilnielsen9760
      @bodilnielsen9760 4 года назад +1

      The enhancements (card upgrades) are restricted based on the prosperity of gloomhaven :) Sucks having missed the rule though and having to reverse the upgrades :(

    • @mendicant1981
      @mendicant1981 4 года назад

      Bodil Nielsen haha yep, I had todo exactly the same. Playing sulphur mine right now, what a terrible scenario, requires a ton of movement and therefore enemies to die quickly which is made very difficult with the FOUR! curse cards from the scenario.

      @@TheMeepleMarathon it is amazing now and as pointed out it links across devices so everyone can put in their initiative and it organizes combat for you. The gloomhaven scenario viewer is also fantastic as you can set up the board and not know what and where the monsters are as well as know exactly which monsters are where and what numbers you should give them depending on your number of players. Those two apps alone make it really easy to play.

    • @geerstyresoil3136
      @geerstyresoil3136 3 года назад

      yes, another vote for Gloomhaven Helper and the Scenario Viewer. much quicker games, and less overhead, which means less mistakes. I actually think the app makes the game better and more fun. I don't say that for many app hybrid games... For Campaign Tracking, I recommend Gloomhaven Campaign Tracker by Stefan Timm (not to be confused with the other one on the app store with the same name, which is inferior imho). For storytelling, the Forteller app is amazing for immersion, not free but well worth it.
