  • Greetings, Historians! Today, I'm talking about the element of Earth from the Legend of Spyro. To be frank, perhaps it isn't my most favorite element, however it seems that it's rather interesting within the lore, albeit not entirely explored or fleshed out. Hopefully I can show you why in this talk.

Since I am actually seriously thinking about the Spyro comic I wanted to make when I was younger, being able to figure out how the Earth Element works would be very useful for me. It is a little more abstract compared to the other Elements in the games, but it is true that it seems to be the sheer energy of nature itself. I like DragonOfIceandFire's idea of Earth being divided into different colors having different attributes, with Grey Earth being more based on rocks and other minerals, Brown being based on soil and dirt, and Green being based more on plants and fungi. I have a character who has brown scales with a brown colored Earth breath that is basically a muddy shot, and another who is half Earth half Wind who has a sandstorm breath. Spyro himself's breath seems to be pure nature energy, which allows him to use all aspects of the Earth Element, rather than specializing in one.
As for Wind, my guess is that it and Earth are in fact separate. The appearance of a whirlwind of leaves in the first LoS might simply be a manifestation of the Earth energy, which creates leaves that are whipped up by the residual energy. Proper Wind is the active movement of air itself, being more like a powerful exhale. It's true that they might be closely related, but that doesn't necessarily mean they're the same.
Poison might actually be related to Earth. Many plants and fungi are toxic, and so are many minerals, so maybe it represents the more dangerous aspects of nature. While what the developers of the games say is not necessarily canon if it's not included in the games themselves, Jared Pullen has said that Poison dragons do exist. They apparently were created by a dark entity, possibly a god if those exist in the LoS universe, as opposed to the light entity that created the elements Spyro uses, so maybe Poison and the other dark Elements are dark equivalents of the light elements? Again, what the devs say probably should be taken with a grain of salt, but when the games themselves are somewhat light on secondary lore, what they say might be our best shot at figuring things out.

If we count all natural disasters we get expected Earthquake, Meteorite, Landslide, Mudslide. But then there also Tornado (Wind), Hail (Ice), Flood (Water), Wildfire (Fire), Thunderstorm (Electricity).

That picture of Terrador fending off the apes in the war... I NEVER noticed that was in Tall Plains. Wow!
And yeah Earth is weird. In the first two games it's just... Green XD. Also you called it Mana. Nice~ Always called elemental magic and power Mana.

My take on the earth elements back in a new beginning and eternal is that it seems to more so be natural disasters the earth shot and the flail could be seen as quakes and tremors meanwhile the earth bomb makes tornadoes. Then in dawn of the dragon earth is shown in a form that you would probably expect in comparison to the other games

The earth element is very underrepresented. It’s applications are wider than at first glance.
To address the wind part of it in ANB, I think the devs were originally going to wind be one of the manifestations of the earth element, but later on dropped it in favor of it becoming it’s own element, and hone in on earths more grounded nature.
By the time TEN came around, it became clear they wanted to change things and earth was more energy focused but not as actual mana. Best i can describe it as is tectonic energy. A solid and corporeal form of energy that hits with the force heavy stone. Spyro uses it to form his flail and to cause powerful quakes when slamming into the ground. In ANB, the earth shot had the same kind of energy but was used to propel shrapnel of minerals like a shotgun.
By DoTD, the element takes on a proper manipulation of rock and stone. Spyro could still do it in ANB but only with using his fury and the boulders would rain down.
So if we’re disregarding the wind aspect, the earth element manifests as hard-hitting tectonic energy and stone.
As for what else it could encompass? It could potentially be used to manipulate plant matter, based on some concept art were vines were being used. And also possibly wood to that extent. Earth has a lot of unexpected potential. Equally offensive as it is defensive.

I know this borderlines on Skylander territory but I believe that what it might also a tribute to is touching into the Life element I believe that the magic between the life element and the Earth element Skylanders might be a tuned differently and dragons themselves operate on a different magic if both worlds are deemed parallel Cannon

I like how nature like this element is sometimes portrayed in media, as opposed to most just having it be a boring rock power. Kinda made it my favorite element for a while, since I too gravitate towards nature, as I tend to hike a lot.

The Earth missile in Dawn of The Dragon is quite powerful lol, especially after being charged up. That thing can destroy a dark crystal from the siege towers with just one shot I believe, assuming no enemies get in the way, though at the cost of huge mana consumption, well balanced I'd say.

Actually, originally I was planning on doing a video on her elements first, but thought it’d be better to start with Spyro’s first. Wanted to give myself some time to learn some new editing tricks for elements like Fear and Poison
