I was once booked into a hotel in Belgrade where the snooty receptionist suggested that I had confused their hotel with a hostel of the same name just around the corner.
The irony is that it was one of the worst hotels I had stayed in, and as someone whose early trips abroad were mainly on school group holidays, that is saying something!
It closed down, and I am sure that it was not missed.

As late as the 1950's,, just before the advent of the civil rights movement, many hotels and resorts had "restricted clientele" policies that barred Jewish-Americans, Asian-Americans, and African-Americans as guests. Even though this was long before the internet, it often happened prospective guests would make reservations months in advance then be told b.s. the hotel or resort still did not have their reservation! Just like in the movie starring Gregory Peck and Dean Stockwell "Gentlemen's Agreement".

The staff was absolutely courteous and helpful. In no way did they demean me because of how I looked.
I bought my new 2024 hybrid Sienna from them that day outright, without financing.

The acting was corny, the reception desk unlike any normally seen, and his tie was missing for such an upscale hotel. But the message was as clear as day. A person's appearance is not an indication of their lifestyle. Many people travel in comfortable clothing, not necessarily in three piece suits or gorgeous dresses.
The reception character lacks the necessary attitude to be in that particular service industry.

Reality, you pay for a room, then you can stay in it. In addition, you have to be dress decently. That is it.

LOL! Apparently the director doesn't know how to use an old style push button phone. First the guest just starts talking to his friend on the phone without dialing any number. Secondly, the male receptionist pushed a few buttons on the face of the phone before picking up the receiver to speak to his manager.
